'~~~*NOT Color But Lack of Beauty?*~~~'
Sadhna is not "pretty" because of her supposed fairness but because of her facial features, even though she is a little on the plump side. On the other hand, Ragni is considered "average" not because she is "dark" but because she does not have classic bone structure that society has come to associate with beauty; rather, Ragni's face is quite gaunt. That is why I do not understand why the serial is showing skin color as the basis for beauty. Lots of "dark" women are considered beautiful in society because they keep their bodies in shape and/or have facial features that are considered classic; cases in point include but are not limited Koena Mitra, Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Naomi Campbell, etc.
So, it always irks me when a show is not completely focusing on the aspect of skin color. For example, after successes of heroines like Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra into the mainstream cinema who are not as "white" as their counterparts in the film industry and serials like Saloni, I think society is fast-coming to accept darker skin color as beautiful as any other. But to highlight the point, the show should not have chosen the actress who plays Ragni. Even the wider society knows dark skin color does not automatically mean that anybody is "ugly." So, of course, plenty of people are regarded as dark but beautiful. Conversely, of course, some people are dark and also lack facial bone structure that makes society unable to consider them beautiful. So, TV shows like Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai completely circumvent their point of prejudice against dark skin color when they show an average girl like Ragni not being accepted as pretty. The truth is that Ragni is not considered pretty because she lacks the delicate bone structure. Even though Ragni is thin, her thinness is translated into an emaciated look that make her features look way too sharp for her face. Even if Ragni had a "light" (i.e. white) complexion, she would still not be considered anything but average. In fact, I have seen plenty of people who are "white" but somehow lack facial features or fitness that therefore are not placed into the societal (man-made) categories of beauty. So, the dichotomy then is not between dark v. light in the show; rather, the portrayed dichotomy lies between average v. above average, or more brutally put, societal constructions of "ugly" v. beauty.
So, is there any surprise that people find Sadhna rather than Ragni more attractive? For starters, the show to have been truly meaningful about skin discrimination should have brought in someone who looks somewhat similar to Sadhna but is dark and then have people surrounding them prefer the whiter Sadhna. That would have been a show about skin color. Otherwise, it seems that the show is trying to say something about skin color that is not completely true or accurate-to-life in contemporary society's eyes.
