Male actors refuse to go grey

Going grey is a no-no on telly these days. Male soapscreen actors are in no mood to add chalk to their dark tresses and 'grow old' in their shows. A few years ago actors like Hussain Kuwajerwala, Hiten Tejwani, Ronit Roy, Anuj Saxena, Cezanne Khan, Ram Kapoor and their ilk willingly played dad to actors much younger than them in real life.

In a scenario where generation leaps are almost a mandate in most prime time dailies sporting grey hair is almost a given, but small screen's male heartthrobs would rather happily let go of shows than look 'old'. Their excuse: playing older characters will put them in a senior actor category and reduce their career span.

Actor Kinshuk Mahajan quit Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai (at a time when the show was ruling the TRP charts) because he didn't want to be part of the eight year leap the show took and sat home for a few months before doing his next show! Reality show star turned prime time actor Vishal Karwal quit Sab Ki Jodi Wahi Banaata... Bhagyavidhata because he didn't want to 'grey' in the shows. Vishal admits, "I can't play a 40 plus man with conviction, so I quit the shows." Actor Akshay Sethi who's doing Sasural Genda Phool, feels that it is better to play roles which suit one's age and personality. "Playing a father too early in one's career may be considered being 'versatile' but most actors feel that playing older roles mean getting similar offers in the future," avers Akshay.

Aditya Redij quit Na Aana Iss Des Laado for the same reason and had to wait for another show for eight months. "Laado... had set a benchmark for me and I wanted to do a show that was more exciting. I didn't want to be a part of the leap, so I decided to leave the show," he says.

Ravi Dubey who's the male lead in Saas Bina Sasural says, "I want to play my age and don't want to be a dad for the next 10 years. When I look young and there are roles that suit me, there is no need to take that route." Karan Tacker from Rang Badalti Odhani adds, "If one plays a father's role early in one's career then the makers think several times before taking them in a new show as a young lead character."

Showmakers are divided on this. Producer-director Rajan Shahi says, "Sometimes the story line demands that an actor should grow old and an actor who is confident about his performance will not worry about his image." Director Rajan Waghdhare says, "In the past when young actors played older roles they found it difficult to get 'young' roles later. Actors believe that if they agree to 'grey' on screen then their career ends soon. Today even middle age actors want to play younger roles."

For those of you thought age was just a number, take a closer look at our telly hotties who still think 'grey' is a dirty shade in their picture-perfect screen lives!

i think this article says a lot and gives a good reply to the hatred going around here..
reading what rajan sir has said i'm proud apoorva took the challenge and made the character anmol believable and its a sign of a very versatile actor and his job is to give his best in any role given to him...we must not forget parul as ragini who stayed in the show and with apoorva they gave the best of their performances as parents to a 7 yr old child...

it takes a good actor to act according to storyline, after all the writers are the ones who etch out the character, be it aging or handicap . apoorva is a great actor he took a challenging role & made it believeable.if bidaii 2 comes i am sure apu will be there as he is a directors actor. this is what is making all this people nervous and they are bashing anmol.

Thanks for the article Savee😃, frankly I did not spot a single grey in Anmol's hair just a lot of hair gel which I hated the most while Anmol was an outstanding character 👏
Anyways I am looking forward to grey haired Anmol if that is possible as I believe he would still look very handsome😍 . Maybe he can start a new trend😉 , if Shanti can post a digital image of grey haired Apu, we all can imagine how he would look.😊
Frankly Rajan Shahiji is too much in the news these days, I wonder which are his next Tv projects🤔

Saveeta Thanks for the article 😊

and Rekha Apurva is one HOT dad I must say !! *wink * *wink* and yes not a gray hair , he will be the most adorable dad in tellyworld !! 😳

Rajan Ji I defiantly agree with your choice for playing gray !! I just hope he will rock more with such grey shades for your show

Tammy is truly proud of this good looking papa of hers.. Moreover I would like to see him wearing his red rimmed glasses he looks even hotter ...And Yeah Rekha no jel, Waise when he had avoided gel couple of times and he looked super HOT !!

I know of one such actor Varun Badola who played Abhimanyu in Astitva Ek prem Kahan Ni Kudos to him since he was young and then he played grey 👏

👏 After that he played the boy next door in Ek chaabi pados mai and he was taken as a lead again in this show and he was opposite Suhasna Dhamini ( who plays Abha in YMGGK) Donno if I got her name right

and I liked the last line, so sooner the actors will have to do that someday if the storyline asks for it and the shows become monotonous and leaps will be eventual so be prepared

ANd about the actors image Apu you have got more people appreciating you for this very line said by Rajan ji which according to me falls in place for you " an actor who is confident about his performance will not worry about his image."

@ Rekha I hope we can see more Apurva in such roles in new seasons of great performance, thats my hope and I am sure many who appricated his acting grey 😳
