PART 2
7 years later...
As a fluid mechanics lecture was going on, the first-year students of FITE, India's top engineering institute, were struggling to concentrate as their professor droned on and on. They felt sleepy and bored. 🥱
Some were cracking jokes, some were flying paper planes and some were just taking a power nap.
In the third seat of the left row, Randhir was trying his best to supress his laughter. His crazy yet adorable BFF Sanyukta was imitating the gestures of the professor and making funny faces. She was sitting in front of him and turned back to entertain him so that both of them could somehow pull through the boring and monotonous class.
The professor banged the duster on the table and said, "Everyone, look over here!" All the students turned to him with wide eyes and fake concentration. And then, something amazing happened.
As PKC was walking around the class, his shirt's button suddenly popped and went flying into the air!
The whole class starting laughing. PKC, flushing with embarrassment, walked out of the class. The bell rang at the exact same time.
The students walked out of the class and went to their respective destinations.
Ah! Freedom from a boring lecture!
Randhir and Sanyukta were on their way to the canteen, when they passed the library, and both of them stopped. They looked at the library and remembered old memories.
"Sanyukta, do you remember how we used to get caught talking in the library when we were in school?" he asked.
She nodded. "That librarian was a terror. She always had a constipated look on her face."
Both of them laughed at that, and continued walking to the canteen.
They reached and sat at a table. Randhir ordered samosas and tea for both of them.
As the food came, Sanyukta raised her glass of tea and said, "A toast to fifteen fantastic years of our unbreakable friendship!" Randhir repeated the same. They touched their glasses and started to eat and drink.
"I am so freaking excited for the next four years, Randhir! Our college life will be awesome! We will hang out here in the canteen, attend lectures, bunk lectures, complete assignments together, and we'll be lab partners too!" Sanyukta said as she devoured her samosa. "And...even get kicked out of the library," she added with a wink.
Randhir grinned and said, "Pagli!"
"So, do you want to go have chaat in the evening?" he asked her after they finished had finished eating and walked to their next lecture. "Sure," she replied.
He entered the classroom. Sanyukta was walking behind him, assembling her notes, when she suddenly collided with someone. Both of them fell down.
Sanyukta apologised, "Sorry! So sorry, I wasn't looking, I...-"
"Hey, calm down, it's ok," the boy replied. Both of them picked up their things and got up.
"Hi, I am Sanyukta. What's your name?" she asked him. "I am Rehan, second year mechanical engineering student. Are you in the first year?" he replied. She nodded. "Bye, I'm late for my lecture," she said. "OK. See you around then," he smiled and said. She went inside and quickly took a seat.
"He was quite cute," she thought, chewing the nib of her pen and taking notes.
In the evening...
"Bhaiyya, do plate papdi chaat dena."
Sanyukta and Randhir were at the Pappu Chaat Bhandar, where they were gorging on chaat.
They were busy devouring their meal, when Sanyukta saw a familiar face from the corner of her eye. She turned to her right where she saw Rehan, the second year guy she had just met that day. He was with his whole gang of friends. Two girls and three boys including him.
They were quite popular and known as the "Cool Crowd". They had very powerful parents and one or two of them had parents who were trustees of FITE.
Not only were they born with a silver spoon, they were quite intelligent too.
"A friendship with them would be quite profitable for me..." Sanyukta thought. The calculating part of her mind had started working. Getting into their group would be quite useful for her and her career.
She just had to do something.
Randhir and Sanyukta finished eating and washed their hands. He shook her out of her trance and walked with her back to college, blissfully unaware of what she was thinking about.
Sanyukta's mind was clouded with ambition. She decided to gain entry into the "Cool Crowd". And at the same time, maintain her friendship with her BFF.
But would it really be so easy? Or would the pursuit of a fake and profitable friendship damage her real and valuable friendship with Randhir?
