I admit that I am not a mother myself, but I would think in situations like these, it would be best as parents to be honest to your children and then help them deal with the truth in the best possible way.
Same thing with Rashi's death. Tolu and Molu were old enough to be told about their mother's death. The family should have broke it to them lightly and then helped them to come to terms with it.
