A split heart is what Ahem has. One part of him understands his mothers viewpoint and the other is his love for his wife, Gopi.
No doubt Ahem has been remarkable thus far.
The old angry Ahem has been firmly locked up inside him. He bore no rage or aggression. Neither did he show an iota of venom, like he had earlier that day to her mami or to her in their earlier part of their marriage.
This is an Ahem who is keeping things together at present. His heart feels for his mother and recent horrible experiences. He believes that this time she is justified in her viewpoint over Gopi. He understands fully his mother's point of view.
Further, he knows that she will instil some sort of punishment against Gopi. This is a trademark of Kokila, which Ahem is well aware of. His silence on returning home was very audible. This was his way of buffering Gopi's punishment. At the same time, keeping peace with his mother.
The outcome of his advice to Gopi that she should have talked to him about this is an opening for Gopi to heed. It is this that will form a stronger sense of trust should she take this on board in the future.
At the dining table it felt as though we were back to the earlier days of his resistance against Gopi but we are aware of his private life with Gopi in their bedroom. If he wants to keep the peace and not show his support and understanding openly for his Gopi he will have to tread carefully. Very carefully!!
His words have been few but have been very purpose driven and to the point. His love for his wife is so very evident when her walked up to her and talked. There was kindness, warmth and genuineness for Gopi. It is not that she is split in her affections but it is with whom she is connected with, this being Urmila and Rashi. This is what he despises the most.
