Part 2

March 2012 - Modi Mansion, Rajkot

As Dr. Neeta entered the gates of Modi mansion she was greeted by Kokila who had been waiting for her impatiently. Dr. Neeta could see Ishan and his friends playing holi in the lawn. The whole family was present there wishing each other but the one for whom her eyes were searching seemed to be nowhere around. Kokila told her that Ahem had refused to celebrate and was in his room. She took her upstairs to a quiet room in the corner. A servant was dusting just outside Ahem's room and as soon as she saw Kokila she told her that Ahem was in the bathroom. Dr. Neeta came to know that the servant was actually there to keep an eye on Ahem. As soon as Dr. Neeta entered Ahem's room she observed it carefully.

It was a large room but with a weird smell which was because it was all packed. The windows were all shut as if the person didn't want any ray of light to enter his room. With a bed in the middle and a table in the corner upon which was his breakfast, half eaten. But the thing that caught Dr. Neeta's eye was a big table in the other corner of his room. It had several files all piled up and there in the centre was a calendar which showed Aug'11. She was scanning his room for other signs when she heard the door of the washroom being opened. As Ahem came out of the washroom, he slowly moved towards them with questioning eyes. Kokila broke the unbearable silence and spoke up "Ahem.. she's Neeta, our neighbor. Actually her husband is out of station so she wanted to celebrate this festival with us. She met everyone downstairs and has wished them.. She was insisting to meet you so I brought her up here."

Ahem was hardly interested but with a fake smile plastered on his face he wished Neeta. Neeta who was carefully monitoring his movements finally spoke up. "Ahem, actually what Kokila aunty said is just half right. Its true that I came here because my husband is out of town and I was feeling lonely but im least interested in playing holi. When aunty told me that even you were planning not to celebrate holi this time, I just thought that maybe we can go out for a coffee..in this way I'll be away from these colours and wouldn't feel alone as well."

Kokila spoke up immediately "Oh that's a great idea.. Ahem hasn't been out since weeks.. He would love to go out for a coffee." Ahem who was least interested in going out and that too with an unknown person straightaway said NO.

Dr. Neeta who fully expected this answer looked straight in his eyes and said, "Ahem you seem to be a bit upset about something. Even I was very sad this morning when I realized that on such a bright, lovely and cheerful day , im all alone in my house. But then a thought came to my mind that what if the person who loved me the most saw me in such a state. I was sad because he was not around but then would he be happy to know that he was the reason behind it. Think about it.. what if the person who loves you the most comes up in this room and finds you so sad and lifeless.. would she feel happy.. You can atleast try and be happy for her.. One coffee please.."Ahem turned around his face to hide his moist eyes which had already been noted by Dr. Neeta. He agreed to accompany her which brought a huge smile on Kokila's face.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soon Ahem and Dr. Neeta were on their way to the nearest coffee shop. As soon as they came up to the main road Dr. Neeta signaled Ahem to stop the car beside a flower shop where a cute little girl was standing.

"Beta what are you doing here.. can we drop you home?"asked Dr. Neeta. The girl smiled, opened up the car's door and almost jumped at the seat behind Dr. Neeta, shouting "hello Neeta aunty, actually im waiting for my brother who went with his friends almost half an hour ago. He said he would return soon… Im sure he again forgot about me.."

Ahem who was now driving towards the little girl's home looked frustrated. Dr. Neeta adjusted herself as if she wanted to look backwards. With the side of her eyes continuously observing Ahem she spoke up "GOPI.. so how's your school going?"

Ahem almost banged the car with the two-wheeler which was moving ahead of them. He immediately applied the brakes, turned around and stared at the girl for a while. The little girl who was naturally scared got down from the car and ran towards her home which was at the end of the road. Dr. Neeta first thought to help the girl but then realized that maybe there was someone who needed more help than her. Ahem was taking deep breaths and was sweating badly. He was lost looking at the little girl who by then had reached her house and was closing the door. As soon as she closed the door a tear dropped down from his eye.

"Ahem… what happened.. Are you alright?" Dr. Neeta spoke up which made him come back to his senses and spoke up "Amm yeah alright..hmm..". Dr. Neeta got down from the car and told him to sit at the other side as it would be better if she would drive to which Ahem readily agreed. As Dr. Neeta was driving she noticed Ahem, all the while staring out of the window maybe just to dry out the tears which dropped down from his eyes every now and then.

Dr. Neeta stopped the car at a park and said "As we came this side to drop the girl, I thought what else could be better than visiting this place, Coffee can be some other day." Ahem who was still somewhat shocked and had no energy left to argue followed Dr. Neeta who took him to the other side of the park where a quiet river was flowing. They both sat down at the bench facing the river which was glittering in the early afternoon.

Finally Dr. Neeta spoke up "So you were crying?" Ahem was busy staring at the river and thinking about something when suddenly his eyes grew wider as he heard what she said. "What? … When?" he spoke softly and looked the other way round. Dr. Neeta continued "When?.. Well I think in the morning when you were in your washroom then.. your eyes were moist when you came out.. and maybe when I told you to be happy for her sake then.. and maybe when you saw that little girl shutting the doors before you then.. and maybe all the time while I was driving this way.." she paused a little just for him to turn around and face her, and then continued "Ahem im a psychiatrist.. I can clearly see the cyclones inside you that are hurting you badly.. why don't you just let them out.. you can discuss your problems with me.."

Ahem stood up and almost shouted "I don't want to discuss anything.. Just leave me alone for sometime." Dr. Neeta went and stood beside him and spoke " See I know its none of my business.. we are here just to spend sometime.. but then I feel that maybe I can help you out.. the immense pain you are carrying with you would shatter you one day.. would kill you.. Don't you want to live atleast for her sake."

"For her sake.. why do you think am I alive ? Im just waiting for her to open her eyes.. just to see her happy again.. that smile, that sparkle in her eyes… I can do anything for them.. but.. but she..didn't even think about me once before trying to commit suicide.. there she lies in coma waiting to die so that even she can leave me and go.. I was able to bear one loss but if she leaves me I don't know how will I stop myself" He again started crying walking slowly towards the river.

As he sat down in the mud at the bank of the river, Dr. Neeta followed him up and sat beside him. She looked at him and spoke "Ahem would you like to tell me your story.. I can assure you that your secret would remain yours forever.. you can trust me.. being a psychiatrist I have had many patients, many of whom had secrets and dark past about which I am aware of now.. but not half of any secret is known to anyone.. not even my husband.. I promise that no one would ever come to know that you and me ever sat on this river bank flipping through the pages of your life.. Im sure I would be able to help you out.. and if you doubt my skills.. even if I wouldn't be able to help in anyway, I would atleast pray for your love..".

Ahem looked at her and then bent forward to write something on the mud. With his fingers slowly running through the mud he wrote in big capital letters.. GOPI. He was staring at the name when suddenly a strong wind almost spoiled the letters. He immediately collected some part of that mud in his hand and smiled sarcastically "Even nature won't be able to take Gopi away from me."

Having the mud in his hand and staring at the river he started speaking "I was 10 when I first met her…."

Very nice again.. He knows Gopi from the time he was 10... Wow that is a longtime.. 😛
So sad though that he thinks she will leave him. I do hope he gets to open up to Dr. Neeta 😊

So he was only 10 years old when he met Gopi - that's 32 years. Something aweful had happened over this time.

It is really interesting reading the judicious way Dr Neeta lead Ahem to open up to her. It will be an interesting story to hear him tell in the next update.
Really well written part.
