"I don't care who goes, I just want my daughter back home ,safe", I answered.
That's when I felt her, a soft, light palm touched my upper arm reassuringly.
"Mamiji, drink some water." she said.
I looked at her and saw a ray of hope of someone that would go to any extent to save her sister. I knew she would risk her life and go to deliver the money to the kidnappers. I pleaded to her,
"Gopi dikra..Gopi dikra..Will you go to save my Rashi?" I asked again, now holding both her hands on the glass she held. Her eyes shed a few more leftover tears.
"Huh? You will rescue her and help her come back na? Say it na..Say it Gopi Dikra" She looked around the room, as if to ask for their permission.
"You will save Rashi na.?.Huh? ..Say it", I insisted yet again, looking at her expectantly.
I waited for her to answer even though I knew the answer already.
"Yes, I will go to rescue Rashi ben", her soft but determined voice spoke.
Unbelievable. We have caused her so much agony, so much misery and yet she didn't hesitate once to say yes, she will save her sister. All those times I treated her like a slave. No, worse than a slave. I always prepared evil schemes to torment her married life, to make it a living hell. I forced her to believe she was a burden, that her life was worthless to us and now, she is the life that is going to save my daughter's. Despite all the suffering I afflicted towards her and knowing that we are the reason why she is uneducated, vulnerable and frail, she still ,willingly, wants to put her life in danger to save Rashi's, who treats Gopi exactly the way I treat Gopi or the way I taught her to treat her. Regardless, she is still so innocent, so kind. Oh Thakurji! Forgive me for the way I treated this girl. She never complained or misbehaved to me, no matter what I said or did. She kept enduring my viciousness and only gave back kindness to me. From this day forward, I promise I will treat her as I treat my own daughter. Gopi, I hope you can forgive your Mamiji.
