Floating.
The sun was shining brightly and had bathed the mountaintop with its light. The snow reflected the sun and Gopi squinted against the glare. She looked around her, puzzled. The snow was thick and as she looked further she could see that there were other mountains in this range capped with snow. Dressed in a thin sari she looked at herself. "Why don't I feel cold?" she asked herself and then looking at her hands she could see right through them. She lifted them up. "How?" Then the flashbacks happened. The kidnapping, Ahem's fight with the kidnappers, saving Rashi and then part of the building collapsing. Shocked she put her hand to her mouth. Was she dead? The realisation that she was in spirit form caused her to stop and think and she felt at peace. Had Kanaji lifted her and wanted to reunite her with her parents? All her life Gopi has wished with all her heart to be with her parents and know their love. She smiled at the thought of seeing them again. But wait. What about her earthbound mother, Kokila. Strict as she was, she loved her as a mother would love a daughter. Gopi found herself floating. No! Before she took the next step she would take Maaji's blessing.
Leaving the serene beauty of the mountain-top, she made her way down the valley. She reached Gomukh, entered the temple there, stood before the deity and prayed. The pandit looked perturbed as he saw a blossom being taken and went back to praying with a vengeance. Leaving the temple she followed the river. Stopping to take in her surroundings she was surprised when a voice spoke to her. "Are you sure that you want to do this?" Surprised she turned and looked for the voice but saw only a bright light and realised that her kanaji was with her. She joined her hands.
"Kanaji, before I go to meet my parents I want to take the blessings of my maaji."
"Are you so ready to leave this earth?" Gopi nodded. "Fine, but before you take the next step I will accompany you. Why are you giving up so readily?" They continued on their way, covering a cast amount of space in no time at all.
"Kanaji, do I have any use for this life? I was deprived of my parents' love and my husband told me that I would never have a place in his heart."
"Is that so? Think back over the last couple of months of your life. There was a difference in your husband. What about the other family members? There is a deep affection for you isn't there?" Gopi thought for a while. She was wavering. They reached the hospital and made their way through the corridors finally reaching where the family sat. "Look at your family. Tell me, are they not suffering too?" Both Maaji and Hetal kaki were grief stricken, eyes puffy from crying and trying to console each other. Jigar sat forward in the chair head bowed. Chirag and Parag stood nearby looking lost. Gopi looked round. Ahem was not there. Neither were Rashi and maami. A single solitary tear trickled down her cheek.
You are upset that Ahem is not here?" Gopi nodded. "Follow me." Both spirits entered the room. Gopi gasped in shock. More so at the state of her broken body. Ahem was sat by Gopi's bedside. She was hooked up to monitors and IV lines. He was holding her hand and stroking her hair.
"Gopi, please wake up. Don't leave me now. Please!"
"He has made many mistakes," the voice continued, "but he is a foolish young man. Spoilt and took his anger out on you. But he is suffering. Tell me? Do you still wish to come with me or stay?" Gopi looked at Ahem and thought about her family sat in the corridor.
"Stay," she whispered. As soon as the words left her mouth, the heart monitor flat lined.
"No." she heard Ahem shout as he jumped up and pressed the emergency button. Gopi looked puzzled.
"Your body is waiting for you. I have cleared the way." Gopi hovered over her body and felt it being sucked in. Doctors and nurses rushed into the room followed by the family. Before they could do anything Gopi opened her eyes and spoke.
"Ahem?"
