Chapter Three
Raas Leela
The curtains were raised and the sound effects begun, the lights went dimmer without notice. The music began to play...
Spotlights shone on stage, as the intro played. A long line of Gopi's in a single file, formed a circle while remaining on the balls of their feet all over the stage in slow motion like they were being woken up with some kind of enchanted flute and being drawn to it unknowingly.
Ahem shifted in his chair to sit more comfortably, while Gopi welcomed the performance with a brightened smile. In perfect synchronization the girls moved to the beat of the song and mimed the words. As each one of them came forward and sang a few words of Kanha Ji informing the audience of his mischievous tricks when teasing the beautiful Gopi's individually, along with a short introduction describing his looks too. They scattered quickly around the stage while adding more dance steps and formed way for a certain someone, not yet visible.
Doing subtle kathak moves the girls acted like they were blowing into imaginary flutes and doing small 360 degree circles step by step.
Eventually the leading male's voice grew more dominant over the performance and the girls immediately added whole movements to their hips and weaving their arms into one another, while going round in circles like they were aloof from the rest of the world. The whole time the girls had swayed their heads to the song with exaggerated moves, to enhance their effect of losing themselves in Kanha Ji's bansuri.
In the back, the entry of a short topaz type blue painted boy who posed as the Kanha Ji of the play was brought up electronically as he held a flute in his hands as though he was playing it. Slowly long flower tassels were lowered onto the stage as though it had transformed magically within seconds of Kanjha Ji's entrance. Creating an artificial Madhuban, the Gopi's danced weaving in and out of the tassels like they were so engrossed in their happiness of sharing the same company as their Kanha Ji.
The only person lacking was his Radha.
For a moment Ahem had wondered what Gopi would have looked like playing the role of Radha, as he stared at the little Krishna amongst the girls. Watching closer Ahem saw the Gopi's surround the Krishna in a hustle, waiting eagerly to see what was coming next, he sat up lost in the Leela, more than he would have thought. When they parted like a river splitting in two directions, out came a swing with the all-famous pose of Krishan and Radha sitting on a flower covered swing looking divine. The young Krishna seemed to look taller than the one before, and matched up to the newly entered Radha, who also looked remarkably familiar, but when Ahem realised who the Radha was, his mouth was left open and his eyes widened. Frozen in his tracks, Ahem was unable to remove his gaze. Covered in lavishing jewelry and unknown to her audience, she was adorned in silk overalls, where part of her fair skin showed off her mid riff contrasting against her light pink traditional attire. A net dupatta kept over her lower bun, carefully revealing the sparkling jewelry on her dark tresses which parted in two ways, her nose ring glistening with the light, and her posture delicately balancing on her younger Kanha Ji's shoulder, it was Gopi Modi! But then something strange happened, her Krishna had thrown a smile at Ahem, in fact his eyes were only on Ahem. Ahem couldn't help wondering if he knew the kid, but then it struck him. It was the same kid he met a while ago at the traffic lights, he was the Krishna of this Leela! Ahem thought in surprise. But that didn't explain what Gopi was doing up there.
Meanwhile all the other Gopi's seemed to have their own little Kanha Ji's aid them around Radha Krishan, so that their attention was not on the centered Krishna. Ahem looked down for a moment and looked back thinking he was too lost in the performance that he was imaging things, but when he looked up, nothing seemed to change.
Gopi, his Gopi was still up on stage, this made Ahem suddenly feel angered at her, and how could she hide such a thing from him. Dancing on stage like she wasn't even a member of the Modi household, it was like seeing a whole new Gopi, carefree engrossed in her own act, smiling with a natural feel that her smile had reached her eyes and visible to everyone. |Her movements were such that Ahem was too numb to even move, her dancing was so graceful, that he had a sudden urge for this performance to never end. not being able to remove his gaze, Gopi and the traffic light Kanha Ji had managed to act out all the famous poses of Radha and Krishan, what one saw on pictures, she fit the character of Radha like that role was made for her.
The performance had come to a slow and shocking end as the last segment of the flute was being played while the curtains were being drawn, and everyone stood up to clap, except Ahem.
'Wow! That was fantastic don't you think Ahem,' said another familiar voice, one that he always longed to hear instead of that gawar Gopi. Turning around in sudden reflex, Ahem was in for another shock, 'Anita!' He almost shouted. 'What the hell are you doing here?!' He questioned further almost stumbling over the chair.
'What the hell are you talking about Ahem, we came together!' She replied instantly with disbelief.
'What?!' Was all he could say.
'Ahem what's gotten into you?' She said reaching out to him, 'we came here together, to see the Raas Leelaa short while back.'
'But...but...' Ahem stuttered flabbergasted to see Anita there, what about Gopi '...where's Gopi?' He quickly asked.
'Gopi...what Gopi?' Anita said making a face, 'oh I'm sorry, you mean that Gopi on stage' she finally understood, 'well I think she's gone off stage now, why what has she got to do with you, it's not like you're here to see her' she said smirking.
'What...but she's my wife!' He let out.
'Your wife?! Are you crazy Ahem, this is not a time to make jokes, come on let's leave, drop me off first and then I'll call you later' she said not listening to a word Ahem was saying.
'Look Anita' he said trying real hard to focus, 'you have to listen to me, something really weird is happening with me. You have to tell me when you came back from Hong Kong first?'
'Hong Kong? I never went to Hong Kong Ahem, I've been here since you returned that day, have you forgotten or something, I think you must have had bhang ke ladoo or something' she decided upon seeing Ahem's peculiar behavior.
'Okay, just wait.' Ahem paused to take a moment to think, rubbing his temples, he tried to make sense of what was happening. Maybe, while lost in the Raas Leela, he dozed off to sleep and is dreaming. No stupid reason, that can hardly be possible, I'm sure I'm wide awake, he confirmed. 'Anita, please tell me that you know I'm married?'
'Married?!' She creased her forehead in amusement. 'Ahem you're not married, but yes you will be soon, to me.' She briefed proudly.
'Kya! My Mom gave permission to let us marry? No that's impossible, I'm supposed to be married to Gopi.'
'Er correction Ahem, your Mother wanted you to marry Gopi,' She finally said giving up. 'Now come on , I have to get home.' She said leaving for the car and forcing Ahem along with her.
It's nothing Ahem, keep calm, you're just dreaming, you're just dreaming that's all, it'll soon be over, he said trying to satisfy himself as he got into his car. His family members were nowhere to be seen, so it must surely be a dream. Reversing in his car and trying real hard to concentrate, his eyes caught the bansuri lying in the back seat of the car where Gopi had left it. How come that was still there, something was definitely fishy, but what. He remembered precisely Gopi blowing into it a few times and then placing it in the back seat when he'd got angry at her.
Well whatever it is I will definitely figure it out, he vowed. No one takes Ahem Modi for a ride. But first things first, he needed to get rid of Anita for the moment.
So this one is a little weird I know. But it will all make sense in the coming chapter/s. From the previous chapter some of you may be able to fill in the gaps as to why a change has occurred in such a way. And if you do not, don't worry, I will tell all in the next chapter itself. From there on things will become clear and then the story will continue in a normal format you could say lol.
I updated this chapter today, particularly for Anu_malu who is returning to her/his (sorry not sure) hostel, and tina_1234 for her impatience lol. Truth is I prob would have updated in a couple of days, but thanks to these guys I'm updating today itself. I do hope you enjoy it, and that I'm not too late.
