Part 37
Next morning Gopi and Ahem left early, right after breakfast, to meet Rahul at his house. Ahem had called him the night bofore to tell him to expect them early in the morning.
He glanced at Gopi while driving, and noticed that she was nervously twisting her sari pallu and looking tensed and worried.
He reached over and took her hand in his, when she looked at him he smiled at her reassuringly, "Relax, everything will be ok, you've already met him once, and I've known him for long time, he is a nice guy."
Gopi smiled at him and tried to relax back in her seat, but she was still nervous about meeting her brother. She closed her eyes and leaned her head against the headrest. She was so lost in her thought, she didn't even notice Ahem had stopped the car and was watching her.
She opened her eyes to see Ahem watching her and gave him a trembling smile.
Ahem was still holding her hand, "Are you ready?, remember if you start feeling uncomfortable or if it get too overwhelming all you have to do is tell me and we will leave."
Gopi replied with a greatful smile and gave him a nod.
He got out of the car and came around to her side and helped her out of the car and walked to the door with her hand cluthched in his.
They stood side by side and waited for someone to open the door.
Rahul himself opened the door, smiled and greeted them, they all went into the main hall, Rahul's wife, Avni, came out of the kitchen and was introduced to both Ahem and Gopi.
Gopi couldn't stop starring at Rahul, trying to look for similar features, and noticed they both had simlar colored eyes, she couldn't see any other similarities and was dissapointed.
They all sat down, Rahul looked at Gopi and smiled. "I can't believe I found you so easily, and best part is you are married to my best friend, whom I have known for a long time, you couldn't ask for a better man than Ahem."
Gopi and Ahem exchanged looks, thinking about their wedding and what they have gone through, Rahul was watching them and frowned, "Is everything ok, between the two of you?"
It was Gopi who anwsered her brother, she looked at Ahem, "Yes, everything is fine." Ahem gave her a tender smile, reached over and took her hand in his.
Gopi then turned to Rahul, "Would you tell me little bit about our sister?"
Rahul looked at Gopi with bit of a sad smile, "Let me just say first that I am so glad you agreed to see me, and know that had I known that your were alive, I would have come to find you sooner, and I am sorry for what our parents did to you."
Gopi just shook her head so he continued, "I was ten yerars old when mom and dad found out that they were pregnant with you and Meera, they were so excited, they had tried for many years to try to have a second child and had just about given up, when they found out about you two."
"Your were older by about two minutes, your were the quiet baby, you never fussed, Meera on the other had cried the loundest in the nursery, she was handful, even when they brought you home, she would wake up the whole household with her cries."
"You were the healthy one, Meera on the other hand had suffered from one illness or another, and she needed the most attention." But there was also unbreakable bond between the two of you."
"She was closest to you, as you got older your presence always soothed her, no matter how many times mom and dad tried to keep you apart when she was sick, so you wouldn't catch her illness, you always ended up with her, you never got sick."
"She could talk you into anything, whether it was playing a joke on me or going outside to play, when all you wanted to do was listen to Dadi tell you religious stories."
Gopi looked up at him in surprise. "Dadi?"
"Yes, Dadi, our dad's mother, she died when you were four years old, and you missed her the most, you spent most of your time with her."
"Right after that Meera was diagnosed with Leukemia, and things were never same at our house."
"They tried the bonemarrow transplant but it didn't work, because Meera had other medical problems also."
Gopi didn't even realize she was crying, she felt bad that she couldn't remember a sister, whom she shared so much with.
Ahem put his arm around Gopi and brought her head down on his shoulder, ran his hand up and down her back to soothe her, his heart hurting for her.
Rahul gave his wife a helpless look, who had been listenting and watching quietly, she squeezed Rahul's arm and went to Gopi, "We are so soory, we never meant to make you cry, if there was a easier way for us to tell you we would, but for now I think that's enough, come on I'll take you upstairs to freshen up and introduce you to your niece."
Rahul and Ahem watched as Avni lead Gopi up the stairs, Rahul turned to Ahem, "Will she be ok, Ahem?"
Ahem watched until Gopi disappeared from sight, and turned to Rahul, "Your sister has been throught a lot in her young age, and that has made her into a very strong person, so to anwser your question, yeah she will be ok."
Rahul frowned, "What do you meant she has been throught a lot? The family she grew up with, did they mistreat her somehow?"
Ahem hesitated but decided to tell Rahul everything, he figured as Gopi's brother he had a right to know everything, including his part in hurting Gopi.
When he was finished he was afraid to meet Rahul's eyes, he still had lingering guilt and shame for treating Gopi the way he had in the past, eventhough she had forgiven him and forgotten everything.
Rahul didn't know what to say, but realized his sister's life had been one unfortunate incident after another, and he was about to pile more things on her slender shoulders.
"So I take it everything is ok between the two of you now, I can see that you both love eachother."
Ahem finally smiled at Rahul and said, "Your sister has a very generous heart, as you will find out once you get to know her more."
"You forget, I helped raise her until she was five, so I know about her generous heart, she spent more time with me that last year than anyone else."
"She had the sweetest smile, and she still does, no wonder you fell for her like a ton of bricks" Rahul teased his friend. Ahem just laughed and shook his head at his friend.
Gopi and Ahem spent most of the day with Rahul and his family, they spent little time with Priya in her room playing with her and getting to know her, they didn't stay long in her room because she tires easily.
Rahul and Gopi spent time alone talking and getting to know eachother better, Rahul showed Gopi some of their childhood pictures that he had, and when Gopi cried he gave her a hug and told her more funny stories of her and Meera, which made her smile.
After lunch they talked about what needed to be done for Priya, as Rahul and Avni's bone marrow were not an exact match, so Gopi volunteered to get herself tested.
Both Rahul and Avni hesitated because they didn't want Gopi to think that's why they had looked for her, but Gopi reassured them, and said she wanted to help if she could, may be it was meant to be, and its a sign from Kanaji.
Ahem smiled at her proudly, and took all the information from Rahul to make an appointment for Gopi to get everything checked.
They wanted to invite Rahul and his family over to their house to meet the Modi family, but decided against it as they wouldn't be able bring Priya with them, so decided to visit with them everyday instead, and have them meet the family some other time.
