Chapter 17
Ahem sat down on the rocks and watched the waves crashing on the shore. It was dark and he could see the waves crashing on the shore in the moonlight. He looked up at the full moon, it really looked breathtaking. He always came here to think and when he needed to take his mind off of things. This place always calmed him, but tonight his heart felt like the waves crashing on the rocks. Waves of emotions were going through his heart right now. Was Gopi so distant because she thought he was married or did she hate him? He didn't blame her if she did. He thought about what Sanjeev had said. A wedding announcement in the paper, he knew he hadn't put one in and neither had his family. He knew Anita must have done it so Gopi would see it. He couldn't believe how wrong he had been about her. She was a selfish hateful person, so unlike his Gopi. What he had felt or thought he had felt for Anita didn't compare to what was happening to him because of Gopi. His whole heart was filled with thoughts of her. Her sweet smile, not that he had many memories of that one besides those before they had married her sweet smell, her innocent face, and her big beautiful eyes. He knew now that what he felt for Anita was infatuation and what he feels for Gopi is true love. He was happy that Gopi had found her family. Sanjeev in these few months had given her what no else in her entire life had given her. Gopi, his Gopi had gone through so much in her life. When she came into his home, she came in with such high hopes. She always wanted a saathiya who would always be by her side. Instead she got a husband who didn't care about her. A husband who always yelled at her. A husband who always made her cry. His eyes filled with tears as he remembered every moment he spent with Gopi. She never had a smile on her face when he was around. Her eyes, which were always sparkling and filled with innocence, were always filled with tears and fear when he was around. The breeze felt good. As the temperature started to drop he began to feel cold. He shivered and wrapped his arms around his knees. The cold was starting to make him numb, but he didn't care. He was already numb. His heart had been cold for the longest and now that it was finally starting to thaw out because of Gopi's love, the rest of him was cold. None of that mattered though. His pain was nothing compared to Gopi's. He was the cause of all of his pain and no one else. He looked down and the clock and realized it was already midnight. He knew he needed to get back to the house. There was a lot to be done as Kamya's mendhi function was the next day. He slowly walked through the front door. It was dark inside and he couldn't see anyone around. He quietly walked up the stairs towards his room. He could see the light on in Gopi's room, but no noise. He wished he could walk into the room and just hold her all night. Talk to her and tell her how much he loves her. He walked towards the door and touched it with the tip of his fingertips. Every inch of this house reminding him of Gopi and the big picture of her in the living room was beautiful. She looked like an angel dressed in green, his favorite color. He heard some movement inside and suddenly the door opened up. Gopi was dressed in a simple salwaar kameez with her hair flowing around her face. The moonlight was hitting her face ever so slightly enhancing her innocence and beauty even more. She looked breath-taking. Gopi heard a sharp intake of breath form him.
"Ji who. Aap ghar agaye. Aap itni dher se kaha the." He could feel the corners of his mouth turning upwards. Gopi looked at him confused. Why was he smiling? She was waiting up for him. She was worried about him.
"I'm sorry Gopi if I woke you up. I was just thinking. I didn't realize it had gotten so late." Gopi looked down at his hand and saw blood. His hand was cut pretty badly. How did he get hurt? Ahem looked down to see what Gopi was looking at realized his hand was bleeding. He must have cut it on the rocks and never noticed.
"Ji apko chot lagi hay. Mein abhi dava laga dehti hoon." She grabbed his wrist and led him into the room. She sat him down on her bed and ran to get the first aid kit. She sat down next to him and lifted his hand. She grabbed the disinfectant and put in on a cotton swab. She took his hand closer to her mouth and began to blow as she applied it slowly on his cut. She cleaned it and carefully dressed it. The whole time, Ahem couldn't stop staring and her beautiful face. Her eyes had a twinkle in them, care in them for him instead of fear and her head wasn't covered. She slowly put away the first aid kit and walked away. "I'm sorry about what Baba said this morning he was just upset. He is very protective of me. I know you have worked hard in acquiring that project and I had given it to not because of who you were, but because I truly did think you deserved it. I promise you that Baba won't do anything to take it away." Gopi's eyes were now filled with the same blank stare he had gotten earlier. Her concern was gone. "Good night Mr. Modi." The last part stabbed him in the heart. He got up and slowly walked towards the door. "One more thing Mr. Modi. Please don't think that my helping you with your hand in anyway constitutes for concern. I did what I would have done for any other hurt person, for the sake of humanity. Please don't forget that." Those words took him back to that day. She had decorated his room so beautifully for him, to thank him for helping her with her burnt hand. He had responded in that same manner. He looked down before walking through the door and into his room. He sat down on the bed and looked at his newly bandaged hand. This must have been exactly how Gopi must have felt when he had yelled at her. He looked over at the wall that divided him from his Gopi. That wall was thicker than he knew. It was also getting thicker by the minute and he didn't know what to do to break it.
Gopi looked over at her chest which held her most prized possession. She knew she had been a little cold and distant today, but she couldn't bear getting hurt again. She looked over at the wall that separated her room from her husband's. Her husband. It felt good to say that. He was still hers and no one else's. He didn't marry anyone else. She knew she still loved her husband no matter what had happened between them. She would always love him and only him. She got up and went into the hallway towards his door. She didn't know why, but she wanted to see him. She tilted her head up and slowly knocked on the door. It was a soft knock and she hoped that he was still awake and could hear it. She didn't want anyone else to wake up.
Ahem was deep in thought lying on his bed when he heard a soft knock on his door. He wondered who it could be at this time. Who was awake besides him? His thoughts fell to Gopi. Could it be her at the door? He didn't want to get his hopes up too high, but somewhere in his heart he felt that it was her. He got up and slowly cracked the door open. When he saw Gopi at the door his heart lit up. He gestured for her to come in and she slowly walked through the door. She sat down on the bed and for a moment didn't speak. Ahem waited for her to say something, but he was getting nothing. Sensing that she was a little nervous to start he spoke up, "Gopi you haven't gone to sleep yet?"
"Ji woh, mujhe need nahi aari hai. Aap ne shaadi kyon nahi ki?" She blurted the last part out rather quickly. She didn't mean for that to come out, but she really wanted to know. The questions came as a surprise to Ahem, but I guess she had a right to know what happened that night. He knew that it was going to hurt her to know that he almost got married.
"I almost got married Gopi. The day Kinjal and Elesh got married; I was supposed to get married to Anita. During Kinjal and Elesh's ceremony, Umang barged in and told the truth about what they had done."
"They had done?" Gopi asked Ahem. Who else had helped Umaang in everything?
"Yeah Gopi they. It seem's Umaang wasn't the only one who was in on making you look guilty that night. Anita had been in on it as well. And worst of all Kinjal had unknowingly had helped them succeed. I found out Anita's real face that night. I found out she was nothing but a gold-digger. Everything I had accused you of being, turns out it was her. I'm really sorry Gopi for everything. I want you know how much I love you. I love you with all my heart and I will do anything to show you how much. Can you ever forgive me?" Gopi looked around the room with tears in her eyes. She didn't know how to respond. He had almost married Anita. He had gone straight back to her after kicking her out of his life. She felt hurt.
"Mujhe nahi pata Ahemji. I don't know if I can ever forgive you. I can forgive you for not loving me and all the harsh words you have said to me. I can also forgive what you said and did that night when you threw me out of your life. I don't know if I can forgive you for almost marrying another woman. I know you never loved me, but it hurts to know that you were so quick to give someone such a significant place in your life. How can I believe that all of a sudden you love me and not Anita anymore? How do I know that someone else might not come along and tell you another lie about me and you will believe them and change your mind and go back to Anita? The day I found out that you had married someone else was the worst day of my life. I really don't think I can ever forgive you for that." With that she got up and walked back to her room leaving Ahem speechless. He knew that he had messed up, but he was determined to get her Gopi back no matter what. Nothing was going to stop him from begging for forgiveness. He would show her exactly what she meant to him; he would show her how special she was. His Gopi deserved all the happiness in the world and he would make sure she got it all back and then some. He crawled into bed and fell asleep dreaming of his beautiful wife.
That was just beautiful!!! Loved every bit. Serves that Aham right... Go Gopi Go!!! Eagerly waiting for next chapter! Cheers!
