Chapter Fifteen
Gopi was running around trying to get everything ready. Kamya and her parents were already here, but Kamya's Bua and Phupha were coming with their family and they were all staying at the Shah Mansion until the wedding. She had to prepare all the bedrooms and make sure they all had a place to stay. Gopi hadn't had a chance to ask who was coming and what their names were all she had were head counts and how many rooms were needed. It was already decided that Kamya would have her own room because she was the bride and there was going to be a lot going on with her. She was right next to Gopi and Malini and Vijay would be downstairs next to Sanjeev. Gopi had put all the adults' rooms downstairs and all the kids would be upstairs. On the other side of Gopi was one of Kamya's brothers. Next to Kamya was Kamya's brother and bhabhi and next to them would be her sister and Jiju. It was almost time for them to come and Gopi still had to make sure all the rooms were clean.
"Gopi slow down. Everything will be fine. You're going to hurt yourself by running around so much." Kamya ran after her will some sheets and pillows. She stopped at the big picture of Gopi in the living room and smiled. She looked so beautiful in that picture. Sanjeev had put it as he wanted everyone to see his Pari right when they walked into the house. Kamya had been so surprised to find out that Gopi and Sanjeev were actually related, but she was really happy for them. It really was a small world after all, her parents had said. She had completely disagreed.
"No Mom and Dad it's a gift straight from Kanaji for his Gopi. Gopi has always been such a devote bhakt of Kanaji and this is his way of saying that he is with her now and will always be with her. He sent Uncleji to our Pari right when she needed him the most."
"Kamya what are you daydreaming about? I really need those sheets now." Kamya laughed and ran upstairs to where Gopi was. She handed Gopi the items and ran back downstairs when she heard Malini calling her name. Gopi stayed upstairs and went into the last bedroom left, the one right next to hers. She didn't know why, but she felt like she needed to make sure everything was okay in it.
Kamya ran up to her Bua and hugged her. "Bua aap agai. I missed you guys so much. We've all been so busy with our lives we haven't had a chance to see each other." She took Hetal, Chirag, Parag, and Kokila's blessing. She then went up to Jigar. "Jigar Bhai aap ne to shaadi bi karli. Bhabhi kahaan hai?" Jigar gave her a blank stare. He really wanted to say he didn't have a wife anymore, but he couldn't do that. Rashi walked over to Kamya and introduced herself. Her cold stare and unfriendly welcome scared Kamya. She gave her bad vibes. She shrugged them off. She had to give her a chance at least. She was her Bhabhi. She walked over to Kinjal and hugged Kinjal. "Kinjal you look so beautiful in a sari. Ek dum Kokila bua ki tara." She walked over to Elesh and shook his hand. "And you must be my new Jiju. It's a pleasure meeting you." Last, but not least she walked over to Ahem. She looked over at her Ahem Bhai and she felt something wrong. His face had a weak smile, but his eyes looked gloomy. He looked like he was carrying the burden of the whole world on his shoulder. She went over and hugged him "Hi Bhaiya. Aap theek ho na? Apki aankhen bahut udaas lagti hai." The Modi's looked over at Kamya and didn't know what to say.
"Nahi Kamya, bilkul nahi. Meri choti behein ki shaadi hai aur mein kaise udaas ho sakta hoon." Kamya dropped the subject and told them all to have a seat.
"Bhaiya, I can't wait for you to meet my friend. Woh ekdum pari hai pari. She's upstairs getting your rooms ready. She's such a doll. She arranged all of this. I'm sure you're all going to love her. Uncleji bhi hai lekin he's gone to the doctor with Dad right now. His health is a little poor and so Gopi has insisted that he take proper precaution. They will be back in a little bit. I'll just go and get her right now." Kamya ran upstairs and everyone laughed at her cheery attitude. She really could lighten up a room. Kamya walked into the room. "Gopi everything looks perfect. Come downstairs now. I can't wait for you to meet everyone." Gopi laughed and followed her friend downstairs. She walked over to sofa and for the second time that week was shocked. Why was Kanaji testing her patience like this? Sitting in her living room was her past chatting with her present like there were no worries in the world. Ahem looked up and was shocked to see Gopi standing in front of her. Kokila saw Gopi and ran up to her.
"Gopi dikhra tum. You don't know how much I missed you? Where have you been?" Kokila hugged her Bahu and held on with tears running down her face. She was so happy she couldn't contain her excitement. Kamya looked over at the scene and was confused. She looked over at Malini, but Malini looked just as confused. One by one each member of the Modi Parivaar addressed Gopi and hugged her.
"You guys already know Gopi? How?" Kamya was confused. Gopi had never mentioned that she knew her family. No one had the heart to tell her except Rashi. Rashi was beyond mad seeing Gopi standing there. This house, everything was hers. She was rich and she hated it.
"I'll tell you Kamya. Gopi is my little sister and Ahem's wife." Kamya and Malini were shocked. They knew about Ahem and his wife, but no one had ever told her her name or what had happened to her. Gopi was the person they had done all that too. Kamya was heart-broken. Her own family had treated her best-friend in that manner. She couldn't digest it. Her pyari si Gopi had suffered so much, but she still only thought about others.
"Gopi Bhabhi." As Kamya said is Gopi turned towards her.
"Nahi, mein kisiki Bhabhi nahi hoon. Mein kisiki behein nahi hoon, aur mein kisiki patni nahi hoon. Meri duniya sirf aur sirf mere Baba hai. Aap log meri dost ki shaadi ke liye aaye ho is liye mein kuch nahi kahongi. But as far as I am concerned I don't want to have anything to do with your family Mr. Ahem Modi." She said the last part looking straight into Ahem's eyes. Ahem's heart bled as she heard his wife say that. "Please, mere Baba ki health bahut karab hai aur woh is sadma ko nahi seh sakenge. Please don't say anything to him. Please." Gopi begged everyone to stay quiet for Sanjeev's sake and everyone readily agreed. They would do anything for Gopi. Everyone, but one person was happy. She wouldn't let Gopi live in peace if she had anything to say about it. Rashi smirked at Gopi.
"Gopi. How are you? You didn't even stop and think once about your Rashiben? I know I judged you very wrongly, but you're my little sister. I missed you." Everyone looked over at Rashi with disgust. Hetal smiled at her daughter-in-law. Even Kamya knew she was putting up an act, but Hetal couldn't see it. Kamya looked over at the smirking Rashi and vowed she would never let anyone hurt her Gopi. 'If Gopi so much as sheds one tear because of you Rashi, I swear I will make you pay.' Kamya looked over at Rashi and smiled. There was no way she was going to let her win in her evil motives. A sudden sharp noise from the door stopped everyone in their tracks. They looked over at where the noise came from and were shocked. At the doorway stood Vijay. Vijay had heard everything that had happened. He had gotten to know Gopi really well and he had never met a sweeter and kinder soul in his entire life. His own family had treated her this way, made him so ashamed. He gotten to love Gopi like his daughter, and to know what his daughter had gone through at the hands of his sister and her family made him weep.
"Gopi Beta Sanjeev is still at the hospital for some last minute blood work. He refused to let me stay with him as he knew that we were going to have guests here and I will go and pick him up in an hour. Everything looks normal. I wish I hadn't listened to him and come home to hear such heartbreaking news. He had tears in his eyes. Don't worry Gopi Beta, we won't let anything happen to Sanjeev. No one here is going to say anything or do anything do you understand?" Vijay looked over ashamed and everyone was silent. He went over and hugged Gopi. "Tere yeh Papa bhi hai teri saath, aur who tujhe kuch nahi hone dega." Gopi hugged Vijay back.
"Ji Uncleji, humari Kamya ki shaadi hai. We should not be shedding tears we should be happy and celebrate as our Kamya is only with us for a couple more days. We should leave all this rona dona for her bidaai." Gopi tried to lighten the mood. She knew it was Kamya's day and everyone should concentrate on her. Vijay looked over at Gopi with such admiration. She had been through so much and now to see these people in front of her, he knew she was shocked. She was keeping it all bottled up inside for Kamya's sake. She wanted Kamya's day to be perfect. He felt blessed that his daughter has gotten such a wonderful friend like Gopi in her life. Vijay greeted everyone before leaving to go and pick up Sanjeev at the hospital. Gopi showed everyone their rooms and as everyone was getting settled she made her way towards one person's room. She knew that however much she tried she would never be able to forget her. She had loved her like a mother. She walked over to Kokila and knelt down for her blessings. She was just as happy as Koki.
"Maaji ap kaise ho? Mujhe apki yaad bahut aayi."
"Yaad aati thi to phir mujhe kum se kum phone to kar dehti. I was so worried about you." Kokila took Gopi over to the bed and they talked. Gopi was so happy to see Maaji again. She laughed with her and cried with her.
"Maaji mein bahut kush ho keh Eleshji ne Kinjalben ko apnaya. Woh bahut kush lag rahi hain. Eleshji is such a good man to have accepted Kinjalben even after everything that happened. You rest now. You must be tired. I have to go and prepare dinner for everyone." Gopi left the room and ran straight into a hard chest. As she was about to fall backwards a pair of strong arms held her balance. She looked up and saw Ahem. He looked into her eyes and saw sadness. He hated himself for making them that way. They used to be so full of life and now they only contained sorrow. Gopi grabbed her dupatta and wrapped it around her head. Oh how Ahem wanted to savor that moment, and soak in that beautiful face, but that stupid pallu was back. That was how Sanjeev saw his daughter when he walked into the room. She was wrapped in the arms of his newest client. She looked uncomfortable, sad even, and she had her head covered. Sanjeev knew something strange was going on and he felt like everyone was tense and keeping something from him. It was Kamya's wedding; everyone should be happy and celebrating. Why did everyone look so anxious? The sound of the doorbell drew Sanjeev away from his thoughts. Gopi pulled away from Ahem's embrace and walked towards the door to answer it. Everyone was gathered in the living at this point and were anxious to see who the visitor could be. Gopi was shocked to see who was at the door. Gopi didn't know how to address the newest visitor as she didn't want her Baba to hear. Sanjeev looked over at the visitor and instantly recognized her. That was the ruthless person who had made his Gopi's life hell.
"Gopi Beta, tera sanskar kaha gaye. Aren't you going to seek the blessings of your Mami?" Gopi's head shot up at that and she looked over at Sanjeev. Ahem was confused. Rashi went over and greeted her mom.
"Mummy, what are you doing here?" Sanjeev looked over at Rashi addressing this woman as her mother and everything clicked into place. Rashi was their daughter; Jigar was her husband which meant that Ahem Parag Modi was Gopi's husband. This was the man that had hurt his daughter so much. Jigar knew what was going on right away. He was angry and went over to Rashi and slapped her. Rashi fell back. Urmila looked over at Jigar and then at Hetal. She rushed to help her daughter up.
"Are these the values you taught you son, to slap his wife and that too in public." Hetal was shocked and instantly began to apologize to Urmila.
"Bas Karo Ma Bas. This girl is nothing but a liar, and a cheat. You have put up a really nice act up until now Rashi, but it stops here. I know what you've been up to so you can stop with your rona dona. You called your mother here so that Uncleji would find out everything didn't you. Haven't you done enough to Gopi Bhabhi. Why are you hell bent on ruining her life? She has always loved you, respected you, and treated you with kindness. You are an evil person Rashi and you deserve nothing but misery." Sanjeev heard Jigar addressing Gopi as Bhabhi and his suspicions were confirmed. He looked over at her Gopi in tears and he couldn't stand it any longer.
"JIGAR! How dare you talk to my daughter like that and all for this scum." She walked over to Gopi and grabbed her by the hair. Kokila went to protest, but was held back by a pair of arms. She was surprised at who they belonged to. "This girl was lucky that my husband took her in and we fed and clothed her. She has always been jealous of my Rashi and always tried to ruin her life. She doesn't deserve to be happy." She pushed Gopi. Gopi was flying towards the sharp corner of the table and everyone bolted to stop her from hitting her head. Ahem reached over and grabbed Gopi. He pulled her close to him and hugged her. Gopi didn't know why, but she held on.
"BAS URMILA BAS! How dare you walk into my house and insult my daughter like that." Urmila looked over at the voice looked at him. He looked familiar, but she couldn't remember why. "Don't think that Gopi is alone in this world. She still has her Kaka, her blood. My brother trusted you people with his most precious gem his daughter and you treat her like this. You hid the truth from me that day. I asked you what happened and you hid the fact that Gopi existed so you could have yourself a free servant is that why? You are shameless and greedy woman. Why didn't just hand her over to me if you didn't care about her huh." Urmila was shocked. Sanjeev was here and he had found Gopi. She thought Gopi was dead and to hear that she is very much alive. She had followed her to that cabin that morning and saw her go inside. She had paid that man to burn it down, burn her alive. How had she survived? Had she left the house before the fire had started?
"Who do you think you are? I raised Gopi not you. You were never around so what right do you have over her. I paid for her meals, and her clothes not you." Sanjeev walked over to Urmila and slapped her.
"You raised her, you worked her like a dog. You paid for her meals; no you stole her money from her. You thought that measly pension was the only thing Bhai left for his daughter. This whole empire, Shah Industries, is Gopi's and don't think for a second that you are ever going to see a penny of it. You left her illiterate. You never let her study or play. You stole my daughter's childhood from her. You stole her freedom for too many years Urmila and now I'm going to steal yours. I know everything about you and your deeds Urmila and you are going to pay for each and every one." Sanjeev grabbed Urmila by the arms and pulled her towards Gopi. "Take a good look at this face Urmila. She loved you like a mom, and you tried to kill her." He pulled her back towards Rashi. "Now take a good look at this face Urmila, because I promise you this is the last time you will ever see it again." Urmila looked at the anger and hatred in his eyes and was scared. She looked back towards the doorway and saw police. She tried to run, but Sanjeev stopped her. "Don't run from your fate Urmila, you brought it upon yourself. They are here to arrest you."
"I didn't do anything. They can't arrest me."
"They are here to arrest you for attempted murder. You tried to burn my Gopi to death. You stole my Gopi's happiness and now I will steal your freedom. I will make sure you rot in prison for the rest of your life Urmila, and then you can rot in hell after you death. Inspector take her away and lock her up where she belongs." The policeman grabbed Urmila's wrists and handcuffed her.
"Nahi Gopi beta save me please! I am your Mami please save me." Urmila kept screaming, but no one listened. No one cared to listen. Sanjeev watched her being dragged away and then turned towards his daughters other culprits. He stared each and every one of them down. He took Gopi's arm and sat her down on the sofa.
"Bas meri beti bas. They have had their chance and now it is my turn." He got up and slowly turned. Kamya was scared. She had never seen Sanjeev Uncle this mad before and she didn't know what he had in store for the Modi's especially Ahem Bhai and she was scared for him.
