Not only Bollywood stars, but the small screen too is now luring fashion biggies. First it was Vikram Phadnis designing for Cinestar ki khoj, Manish Malhotra designing for Kudrat Karishma Ka and Satya Paul chipping in with his ties and suits in Jassi Jaisi koi nahin. Now Saregamapa, the oldest programme on Zee TV, has roped in designer duo Ashima and Leena Singh to design the outfits for the contestants.
The duo has created 24 outfits for 12 contestants for the two episodes to be aired on Thursday and Friday this week.
But why designer-wear for the contestants? "The Saregamapa Challenge 2005 is now in its final stage. This is the time when the whole world would be watching it. We wanted to take care of the way they look, so that they can concentrate on their rehearsals," says Gajendra Singh, the programme's director.
"We wanted to take the traditional route, and thus was born the idea of designing the outfits by Ashima and Leena. We couldn't think of a better name," adds Singh. And while the designer duo would be busy taking care of the outfits of 12 contestants, Cory Walia will be taking care of the make-up. "The biggest challenge for us was to keep in mind that these outfits should not overshadow the talent of these singers," says Ashima.
For the male contestants the designers have chosen ethnic churidar-kurta with contemporary patterns and silhouettes. The girls will be given different types of fusion looks. The fabrics are decided keeping in mind the comfort factor - they range from georgette to brocade, chiffon to organza and from silk to crepe. Bright colours, pearl work and sequins are much in evidence. "We didn't want to create a thematic collection, the idea being that each one is comfortable in what they wear," says Leena.
