The lone ranger
In conversation Himesh Reshammiya courts controversies as much as chartbusters

ALL SAD & DONE! Himesh Reshammiya's idea of love has an element of longing

Keep all the controversies aside and you will agree this guy has got guts. Right under the nose of established singers and music directors, he found a place for himself. While critics kept dissecting his unusual voice he kept delivering chartbusters which kept the wedding processions in the hinterland swaying and the hip crowd in the metros jiving at the same pace. When you give 30-odd hits in one year this becomes immaterial from where the voice originates. And with Aap Ka Surroor, Himesh Reshammiya has added acting to his list of audacity.

"I have zero talent; whatever is there is God's grace." Modesty? "No, it is a fact. When the divine power is with you, you keep achieving success. All great music composers have faced lows. Did their talent dessert them? I feel they lost out on His favour."

Still why turn to acting at the height of his singing career? "The credit goes to Prashant Chadda, the director. He has directed most of my music videos. He came with a script which only I could carry. I am playing myself. The character is called H.R. The script is quite natural, so not much effort had to be put in acting per se."

Smart answers

Is it as real as the tagline says a real love story? "No it is a Bollywood potboiler with lots of drama, action and emotions. However, certain things, which people want to know about Himesh have been smartly answered in the film. Like people want to know why I don't smile, why in the music videos the girl leaves me because of some miscommunication and of course, the cap."

Himesh says his understanding of true love has a distinct element of longing and anxiety exemplified by his compositions like "Shab-e-firaq Hai" and "Aap Ki Kashish Sarfarosh Hai".

In fact, in the film too, Himesh asked the director to shoot two endings, one sad and the other happy. He, however, refuses to divulge which one has been retained.

On the charge of his music getting repetitive, the latest being Apne, released alongside Aap Ka Surroor, Himesh says it is the commercial constraints that make him do so. "Few remember that I did the music o f Benaras as well. Creatively satisfying, it was purely classical, but failed to sell in the market. Tomorrow, if some producer wants to lose money I can create such music again."

Arrogance? "I can't afford to. I have accepted that I sing from my nose after the controversy with Ashaji, when she threatened to slap me for comparing myself with R.D. Burman." Then what's the truth? "I had said that when you sing on high pitch, some notes sound nasal and it has happened in the past. I was misquoted…still, when I know that 99 per cent people like my music, why to agonise? So I accepted."

And it has worked for Himesh who got Asha Bhosle to sing a new version of R.D. Burman's timeless piece "Mehbooba Mehbooba" from Sholay for Aap Ka Surroor. "I want to make it clear that the song has been recorded after the controversy and is my tribute to Pancham da."

Himesh Reshammiya: The New Face Of Bollywood Music
By: Dhanyasree .M

Bollywood music lovers woke up to a new voice on a fine morning in 2005. Very soon the Indian streets, restaurants and music stations started to buzz with the lyrics Aashiq banaya... The distinctive high-pitched nasal twang of the singer enchanted the music world. Yes! It was the rising of a new star in Bollywood music- Himesh Reshammiya.

Himesh Reshammiya was born on 23rd July, 1973 as the son of veteran Gujarati music director Vipin Reshammiya. He did his schooling at Hill Grange School in Peddar Road where he met his best friend Prashant Chadha. Prashant is responsible for Himesh's new look and for directing all of Himesh's music videos from his private album Aap Kaa Surroor as well as promotional videos for the movies Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Aksar and Tom, Dick & Harry.

Himesh Reshammiya started his career as a music director. Salman Khan gave him the first chance as a film music director for the movie Bandhan(1998) along with the composer Anand Raj Anand. The aspiring Himesh got his first break in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998). Reshammiya has developed his own unique style of composition, based on pop and techno beats, with a lot of English words thrown in.

Himesh Reshammiya got into limelight as a singer with the ever hit song Aashiq Banaya Aapne... in the movie entitled with the same lyrics. He won the Filmfare Award for the Best male Playback Singer in 2005 for the same song. He also released a solo music album entitled Aap Ka Suroor, which became extremely popular.

Reshammiya started to release music videos for songs for films that have not been screened. This trends has become extremely popular with Zara Jhoom Jhoom from the film Tom, Dick and Harry and Jhalak Dikhlaja from Aksar.

Himesh's music set a new trend not only in bollywood music but also in bollywood acting and fashion also. He will score the music and make his film debut in Aap Ka Suroor-The Real Love Story, a movie on his life. Reshammiya's fashion is quite distinct by his a cap and is usually seen wearing a pair of jeans with a conspicuous belt buckle along with his trademark stubble. His fans also imitate his beard and the one earring on his left ear.

Himesh Reshammiya's fame as the popular singer never saved him controversies. He replied to a criticism about his nasal voice In November 2006, by stating that Mukesh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and R.D.Burman also used to sing nasally. This statement invoked the wrath of eminent singers like Asha Bhosle and he had to apologize many times for remarks.

Himesh Reshammiya has so far won the below mentioned awards:

Star Screen Awards (2007) Nomination for "Best Music Director" for Aksar

Filmfare awards (2005):

Himeshji is a controversial figure and has a achieved much within a very short span of time. The test will come if he is able to stay among the top for a few more years. There is no doubt about his ability although his actions as a judge at the SRGMP contest has drawn some negative reactions, apart from some of the things he says in public. But I must admit that I do like some of his compositions. Currently it seems music is being churned out in the industry in truck loads , so competition will only get tougher.

Bob no one knows the pulse of the music market better than you. As for me I see talent everywhere and indeed it is infinite so frankly no one person is larger than the Music and in a way I think human beings are mere instruments that Music decides to tinker with and fulfill her own dreams.
