Television shows popularise bhajans'

Anup Jalota

Everything nowadays is mini and compact, right from the clothes to 20-over cricket contests. Classical music too has come a long way from the days of long play disc to the compact disc.

Like my father, Purshottam Das, I too came to the city and struggled my way into the music industry. I worked at the All India Radio for three years. I use to work as a chorus singer and earned Rs 320 per month. I also did small concerts and shows to make some extra money. Finally, in 1980, my efforts finally paid off with the launch of my first album Bhajan Sandhya.

Every musician shouldn't think of his/her struggling days as struggle. It's not struggle but a training period. One learns the most from those days. There was a time when I had gone to Mehboob Studio to meet Lata Mangeshkar who was recording a song for Laxmikant Pyarelaal. Pyarelaal requested me to sing a few lines for a song he was recording then. Obviously I was glad to do it and the title song, Ek dooje ki liye became a hit.

Although, amateur singers today don't face much struggle with the number of reality shows and platforms available, I believe one can become an idol overnight, but these are short-cuts which lead to a short circuit.

I strongly propose the span of 'training', since an amateur can learn the most from this period. Although I'm not a purely classical singer I try to go beyond the technicalities of music, my aim to sing with melody to the touch the hearts of my listeners.

As for remixes, I feel that, unlike before where a classical singer would sing a raaga for hours inducing the modulations, today people simply don't have the patience.

As Indian music finds greater exposure in the West, there is whole new market for the singers. I perform every month in America, and I believe that the future of classical music is bright and will continue to be so. After all, no pop singer is awarded the Bharat Ratna like Ravi Shankar and Pandit Jasraj. Youngsters aren't aloof from our culture. Television shows popularise bhajans. It's only a matter of time that every child will know them all. It is necessary to update yourself with the latest music from desi pop to the western music. To me this variation in genres is inspiring.

The phrase used short-cut-leading-to-short-circuit is very apt. 👏 . The professional longevity of today's singer will be nothing compared to Lata-Rafi-Asha-Kishore etc. Not sure thought if that is because of a larger spectrum of availability of singers or lack of focus on training (fast and furious generation).

Mr. Anup Jalota is highly respected and I love his delivery. He is proposing for singers to go through the grind and learn the hardway. But most singers start very young now a days and by age 17 they should be proficient. But I guess there is much more to it to be a master depending on each individual's capabilities and talent. 👏

Anupji's bhajan -"kabira jab hum paida huye",... I loved listening to it right from the time I was a little kid. Somehow the song always kept me occupied enough to let my mom feed me it seems.😆 I still like it, Have heard many more since then, but that song somehow remains my top favorite.

There is truly no shortcut to success. For a singer riyaaz is the only option to deliver best.

Thank you Kavita akka for the article, music is after all divine and Anup ji is a true artist in that sense.

One of the best bhajans of Anup Jalota ji, whenever i feel in the dumps which i always listen to and which gives me courage, energy, eliminates my fear is the divine chant of Hanuman chalisa!. I thank Anup ji for the master piece.
