SaReGaMaPa | Challenge 2007
Winsome threesome
Chaya Unnikrishnan
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 has come up with some of the best singers in recent times - Whether it's Anik Dhar, the most versatile of singers, Amanat Ali who has a strong classical base or Raja Hasan who specialises in Sufi songs - Zee's Sangeet Ka Pratham Vishwa Yuddh is the utlimate winner. A tete-a-tete with the three finalists...
Do you think you will win the title?
Raja Hasan: I don't believe in winning or losing though I know there are a lot of expectations and hopes from my fans and family. For me, the fact that I have reached the final itself is a big achievement.
Amanat Ali: The contest began in May and when I was part of the selected 40 contestants, I never thought I would reach the finals because each was better than the other. Now, I am working very hard to fulfill the expectations of my parents and fans who have supported me.
Anik Dhar: I am very happy to be part of the finale because all the three of us are strong contenders. I am hoping that I do well and I am training hard. If not you, who do you think deserves to be the winner?
Raja: When the judges themselves have refused to name one singer, who am I to choose. However, I think when it comes to being a trained singer it's Amanat and when you talk about perfection it is undoubtedly Anik.
Amanat: If not me, I think Anik deserves to be the winner. Not only is he a good singer, he's also versatile.
Anik: Singing wise Amanat, voting wise Raja. Seriously, I think it should be Amanat. What is your relationship with your mentor?
Raja: Vishal and Shekhar have been extremely encouraging from day one. There's one incident that I will cherish forever. For the last episode, Vishal-Shekhar were busy recording a song and couldn't make it to the show. After I finished two performances, I called and told them that both the songs had got a rave response. The next thing I know, the duo has packed up their recording mid-way and arrived on the sets to support me. It was an extremely emotional moment for me. Imagine, the country's top composers interrupting their work to reach and encourage me.
Amanat: I knew Ismailji before the contest began. I was the winner of a live Sa Re Ga Ma Pa competition held in Pakistan of which Ismailji was the judge. It was he who suggested my name for this Sa Re Ga Ma challenge and made me part of his gharana. Even before the contest began I had sung a song with Sadhna Sargam for a film scored by Ismailji.
Anik: I have always been a die-hard fan of Himeshji and am grateful to God that I got him as my mentor. These days we are interacting a lot and he advices me to sing well, no matter what. Have you got any offers from composers during the competition?
Raja: I have sung one song for Shankar Mahadevan for High School Musical 2 and one for Bappi Lahiri.
Amanat: I have sung the title song of Junoon starring Govinda for Bappi Lahiri. I have also sung for a film called Bal Ganesh. Right now, I am getting a lot of offers from Bappa and other composers.
Anik: I have sung alongwith Sumedha for Love.com and a Bengali film. Bappi Lahiri has composed for these films. I have also sung in Bal Ganesh. Do you know that your fame will last as long as the contest is on. Are you prepared for the tough battle ahead?
Raja: Though I am from Rajasthan, I have settled in Mumbai since the last eight years. I have been struggling for a break since then. Zee and Sa Re Ga Ma has given me an opening and am hoping that I will get little work. It has made life a little easier but my struggle to be a playback singer will continue.
Amanat: I am hoping to make a career as a playback singer in India. Right now, I am shuttling between India and Pakistan where I am the lead singer of a band called 'Mekaalhasan'. Whatever happens, music was, is and will always be my passion.
Anik: I will struggle to establish myself as a playback singer, my idol being Sonu Nigam. Before that I will go back to Kolkata and complete my studies. I was doing my 12th when I was selected for Sa Re Ga Ma.

Amanat, Himesh was hinting at a love triangle that involved you...
(Amanat cuts in): It started as a love triangle between me, Anik and Sumedha and later became a quadrangle with Mouli as the fourth angle. But honestly, there's nothing to it. Sumedha tied a rakhi on my wrist in the initial stages of the contest itself and Mouli is my best friend. There's no romance between us. It was played up just to have some fun on the side. As I said, I am serious about my career right now and there's no scope for a girl-friend and no, there's nobody waiting back home in Pakistan.

These interviews always seem dictated by someone else to me...but anyway.

Raja gave a very gracious answer.

What is wrong with Amanat and Aneek? Between the two of them, couldn't they have mustered up some better sportsmanship than "voting wise Raja?" Those dorks. 😕😕😆
