You you go back the female singers were just as good but they got booted out. I don't see female voices lacking in any shape and form then male voices they are just not appreciated.
I don't want to sit for an hour and just listen to male voices one afer the other. Sumendha and Poonam both are very good. They make the show. Sumendha's Hawa Hawai is very very enjoyable.
april, i disagree. well i sort of agree, but mostly don't. what i mean to say is, coming out of the agnipariksha round i didnt really think any of the girls were WOW. i thought nirupama has a great voice, but she suffered from lack of differentiation. ie she can fade away and people may or may not remember her. versus someone like aneek who i think is very skilled but also has a very typical sounding voice... people will probably remember him for at least a year after all the dramas built around him (proposing to diya, salman epi without shirt, HR love triangle, etc)
poonam is a strong contender but because her voice is so different, people don't enjoy all songs sung by her (ie softer numbers). sumedha has a sweet voice but in the earlier rounds struggled as she didn't seem to be as strong technically as the other singers.
there's also the question of whether or not there is the range of singers and songs to sing within desi music...not as much for women as for men. speaking specifically to film music, if heroes/male character actors are given a stronger role in films, they get stronger music versus the heroines...so mussarat/raja have a nice range of songs to choose from versus female singers to suit their voices. remember when poonam sang tadap tadap (sung by a male) and people on this forum were talking about that? i'm a fan of mussarat but cringe at the thought of him singing mainstream sonu songs--imagine what that would be like!
