I think the best way to judge singers, is to make them all sing same song individually. That way we can clearly make out who's sung the best. The one singer who's most consistent would only win the competition that way. e.g. Mussarat would have failed in item song, mauli would have failed in romantic songs etc.
In a way I support VS for verstality issue.

Nothing better than the IF Saregama common song choice - teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hain
just perfect to test them all!
