The logic behind the 'Indian Shakira'

This is an objective analysis of why Bappi Lahiri calls Mauli the Indian Shakira and how Mauli and Shakira ARE actually similar:

Unique Voices and Magic:

Both of these ladies have very different tonal qualities from the conventional voices that are predominant in the music industry.

Whatever their detractors may say, both Shakira and Mauli excel in a certain genre of music. While they are horrible in certain songs, in their own unique genre, they can really create magic!

Dancers and Entertainers:

It can't be denied that these women are better known for their performances compared to their singing.

Shakira is well known for her belly dancing; in school she was known as "the belly dancer girl". Mauli has also participated in a dance competition (Boogie Woogie)

"Siren" Image:

Be it dressing sense or performance style, these two women have been directly or indirectly typecast as seductresses or sirens and do not appear to be uncomfortable with that image.

Criticism:

Shakira has had her share of criticism since the 2nd grade, when her music teacher said that she had a "voice like a goat". This was in reference to her unusual vibrato. (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/shakira/articles/story/5 937750/shakira)

Mauli has received numerous criticism on and off this forum for being "nasal", "raspy" and even "tone-deaf"

Fan base:

Their detractors are not too happy about that, but they DO have their fan bases and there definitely are people who like them and their singing.

Disclaimer: The author is not a Mauli fan or hater, but a detached observer of how different types of people react to the controversial Ms. Dave 😛

Good observations Tanaz. Well she does have a powerful voice, but the way she tries to give every song the maiyya touch, I guess that is something I cant connect with.

i dont really think that bappi da gave this as much thought as you did. i think he just randomly said shakira. just like he couldve said beyonce or whoever else. just that shakira is very popular here and comparing mauli to her sounds oh so cool. i highly doubt he put in even half the thought you have to it.

although your posts are quite well written always.

Thanks, pyaari_puja, swifthorse and Iloveapu! 😊

@ Adi: Thanks. As for the "Mayyafication" of the songs, I don't think its intentional, but I agree that she does do it at times. 😆

@ roobaroo: Yes, Bappida does tend to enjoy lifting various tunes (and now even names!) from different sources

@ Karishma: 😆 Add singing to your list and then perhaps you can give Ms. Dave some competition for the position of Shakira with desi tadka ;)

@ kim: Thanks for your kind words. Honestly, my observations were just on the surface.

While you're right about Bappida being random many times, I think this is something he actually did give some thought to.

As you said, he could have picked Beyonce or Britney. The fact that he specifically picked Shakira shows that he has put some thought into it.

Also, he consistently markets her as the Indian Shakira. Sumedha's title started off as the Indian Britney, but was quickly changed back to Chattisgarh's Barbie Doll. (probably because Britney is a very limited singer 😆)

However, in Mauli's case he has never wavered in his marketing.

Considering how the man managed to get the pulse of youngsters during the 80s makes me think that there's more to Bappida than gaudy jewellery and strange musical couplets.
