'Say Na' singer Aneela spells with Mahi By MIO Team |
The sweet-toned singer prefers listening to everything from Bollywood to Abida Parveen, Lata to Jagjit and being part of Europe's successful band Toy Box is also into composing songs that aims to empower women. She was born to an Indian father and half-Pakistani, half-Persian mother and grew up in Denmark. She started singing at 15 and from that age aspired to be a singer. Though she has worked in Europe, her songs echo a desi flavour. Here is something she has to tell about herself. "I have never lived in India but I am very close to my culture. We speak in Hindi or Urdu at home because of my parents. My grandmother is a poet in Pakistan and she introduced me to the verses of Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz. My father loves listening to ghazals sung by Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas and Mehdi Hasan. I grew up with a major crush on Amitabh Bachchan, which I still have and I also believe I am different from others like me." About her new album she puts in, "It took me a while to put my first album Mahi together because each of the songs - and there are 12 in all - are well-thought of. Mahi has a Punjabi feel, Makhna is all about promises made to girls and how they are not kept. It's a happy-go-lucky song. The tracks on the albums concern subjects I can relate to and are close to my heart. I have been given the full freedom to come up with the tracks and since I have worked with people from different backgrounds, there were ideas floating all around." to listen to the songs from the album. |
