Home at last, with celebrity baggage - Silchar singer struggles to reconcile his new status with his boy-next-door memoriesIDOL CHAT |
Voice of India Debojit Saha missed his mother the most when he performed for the first time in Silchar after his grand feat... The day I had been waiting for finally arrived. At long last, I performed at my hometown Silchar on November 20. Oh, what a different feeling it was to perform in front of people who are almost like family members. I also had another show at Nilambazar in Karimganj district the following day and both performances were hits as far as the crowd was concerned. I was supposed to perform at Hailakandi too, but due to some unavoidable circumstances, that show had to be cancelled. Actually, I was supposed to sing for my fans in Silchar immediately after I won Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Voice of India contest. But due to one reason or the other, my show had to be cancelled. Now I must confess that after having performed for my Silchar fans I am a relieved man. I say "relieved" because when I don't fulfil my promises, I feel really disheartened. In fact, the people of Silchar are the ones who had given the initial push. If I don't say this, I will be doing them a grave injustice. Any performer will vouchsafe that it is the people of his/her hometown who are the first listeners and admirers. At both Nilambazar and Silchar I was given a grand reception. They just could not stop shouting "Debojit, Debojit"... And every song was followed by frenetic cries of "once more, once more". It was overwhelming! In fact, the audience at both places began humming with me and some even broke into impromptu jigs. Although I have performed on several other occasions in Silchar, performing on home stage after winning the popular contest was a different experience all together. I was bit nervous as well. What if I failed to give my best? But, I had a great time. In Silchar, I was accompanied by Nihira Joshi and Keka Ghosal on stage. Nabin Prabhakar, the famous comedian of Star One's Great Indian Laughter Challenge fame, lighted up the show with his own brand of humour and had the crowd in splits. But one thing that kept haunting me while performing in my hometown was my mother's absence. I wish she were there, sitting in that front row, listening to her Debojit. Had she been alive, she would have definitely been there to cheer me. But I am sure, wherever she is, she's showering her blessings on me even now. My wife Vandana, however, was there with me during my Silchar visit. At times, it feels a bit odd when people in Silchar treat me like a star. It's hard for me to act like a star, obliging them with autographs and waving hands from a corner surrounded by security personnel. I am still the simple old Debojit of Silchar. But after winning the Zee TV contest, many treat me like a hero and at times I feel a bit awkward. |
