Well established playback singer of Hindi as well as Nepali cinema, Udit Narayan got his first break in 1980, when noted music director (composer) Rajesh Roshan asked him to do a song for the Hindi movie titled 'Unees Bees'. He got inspiration from none other than late Mohammed Rafi. But the actual success story of his career began in 1988 with the super hit Bollywood movie 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', fetching him a Filmfare Award, said to be the Bollywood equivalent of the Oscar. However, the turning point in his career came from the movie 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'. Besides, Udit has sung in the recently released Shah Rukh starrer 'Don' too. During the chat with us, the singer spoke about his singing experience in 'Don'.

Excerpts of his chat:

How was the experience of singing song for 'Don'?

I am thankful to Sameer ji for this. During the year the original 'Don' was released, I came to Mumbai to become a singer. At that time, I had never imagined that I was born so lucky as to get a chance to sing this hit song for Shah Rukh Khan in today's 'Don'. It just came as a surprise. First, I refused to sing the song, because I thought I won't be able to do justice as Kishore Da had sung it so well in the original . On the other hand, I felt happy to get a chance. I found it a big challenge. There is a difference between singing a song on stage and in a film. But I am happy that it came out well.

It feels proud to be part of celebrations of platinum jubilee of music industry. I wasn't even born at that time when the trend of music began in Bollywood. And till date the trend is getting appreciation. We have traveled a long way from where we began and this journey has not been so easy, our musicians have really worked hard and sacrificed a lot to take our music industry to the globe. I congratulate every one in the industry for this day of achievement. I feel proud and lucky to be part of this industry.

How far has Bollywood music come during the last 75 years?

I have had experience of singing for audience across the globe. I have realized one thing that our country is the richest in every aspect, especially music. We have all genres here. I am really thankful that I am born in India.
