You know, in the last little champs episode(Bappi Lahiri special), Bappi lahiri was bragging about the fact 'Mera ye gana America mein no. 3 pe chala". He made lot of hallas when "Truth hurts" group added a portion of "Kaloyoon ka Chaman" to their rap song(which again Harry Anand re-copied - exact beats). Look at Bappi Lahiri's carrier more than half of his work is copied from all over the world. He did not even spare Bangladesh.

In that episode itself:

Yaar bina chain kahan re(Bangladeshi tune- je jon moner bhaab janey na)-Aarman
Sochna kya (copied from some Hollywood tune)- Dewakaar
Zubi Zubi Zubi(Brother Loui)-Gurpreet

I am not quite sure but "Disco Station"- Shraddha also sounds copied to me. Somewhere I heard the original one, don't remember.

Thanks for the post, Pradarshakji. The song 'Je jon premer bhab jane naa' is a very popular Bangladeshi Lok Geeti (folk) and Yaar bina chain kahan re is copied from that. There are other songs as well but I don't have it on top of my head right now.

Do they consider themselves as music composers? I was shocked to see the kind of work they do.

Hindi Song: Jaana Jaana (Murder)
Music Director: Anu Malik
Copied From: Firiye Dao (Pop Band Miles) Bangladeshi Band

Oh my God, I just listened to the 'Jaana Jaana' song from Murder for the first time and it's copied from start to end from 'Firiye Dao' which was released more than 10 years before Murder was released. 'Miles' is a very popular band in Bangladesh and one of the oldest band groups. Here is a link to the 'Firiye Dao' song if anybody is interested to listen: http://www.mybanglamusic.com/mp3/Band/miles/Miles-Best-Of-Vo l-1/miles-firiye-dao.mp3

One thing we must realise that composing in a vacuum is impossible. Every MD has been inspired by some other music, whether folk or classical or anything else.

Before you make a judgement, you must hear the original fully and decide whether the MD has really copied completely. Some are complete copies like "jab koi baat bigad jaaye" and "sochna hai kya" but others are subtle. I won't blame the subtle copiers so much because sometimes they make a piece which is really top class.

For example, the song "phir wohi raat hai" from Ghar composed by RD. It is copied from "Sing a song" by Carpenters but somehow I like to listen to both the songs! The copy sung by Kishore is so bewitching. The lyrics are good, the mood is different from the original and the orchestration is typical RD.

SDB of course borrowed heavily from folk music. Now if the folk musicians had copyright laws, they would have sued SDB! Same goes for OP Nayyar and others. OP Nayyar's "dekh kasam se" is exactly like "Kiss me another" but I like "dekh kasam se" because of the lovely vibes between Rafi and Asha - what a fantastic duet, OPN made it into.

Frankly, I am not able to come to a conclusion about what kind of copying is good and what is bad.

OK Sahana,

http://www.itwofs.com/hindi-am.html

Listen to Anu Malik's copy... number 45. Bhige Honth Tere Pyasa Dil Mera -- listen to the original song... (listen to the full song) Anu has taken the song and just replaced the words.... 200% copy, line by line... no inspiration...no improvisation...nothing... this is blatant copying... and Kunal Ganjawala won best singer award for this song. Award for a completely and blatantly copied song...What a shame! This is just not bad but disgusting. And look at his other "work"...and you can easily come to the conclusion...

When Anu Malik was on top as music directors, Bappi Lahiri once comented on him in one of his interviews -
"I copy but he photocopies"... That way even bappi Lahiri is 'at least honest'

Sorry, this honor was taken by Anu Malik loooong before. He made a statement once ..... "No music director is original today... but I have become a favorite whipping boy to the press"
