SUPERB IDEA. With the number of people hitting this website everyday, it would be a wonderful platform to promote classical music. But I don't think it would be very popular if we have a hardcore classical episode as the first episode. The taste for classical music develops with time. So we should start with light classical, then go to semi-classical for few weeks and then go to pure classical. I am praying that by that time our listeners will develop a taste for it.

I agree.

If the intention is to reach out to the audience and promote classical, we will first need to get them hooked to this style of music.

Presently, with the Retro, we are trying to do that, but it is not as popular as the new tracks of today. Despite being a good show, we do not get as many listeners to it as we do for the other shows. Its a select captive audience even for the podcast listeners.

So first target must be to promote this style of music.
Identify our listener.
Identify the style which appeals first.
Get them hooked to the music.
Get them involved.
The road is then clear for promoting classical music.

We would need to find a good base which can be used to first hook the listeners. Maybe as we work on other aspects of this show, some of us can start working on this aspect, so that we can start the ball rolling on this fast.

Just my usual two cents worth 😳

I think the process has already started by including a classical round in the IF-SRGMP. I hope that in future contests, the classical content will be increased. for example, by asking all contestants to sing a film song based on Raga Yaman Kalyan. This will make them more aware of ragas and put them on the path to learning them.

Yes Sahana, but if we are talking in terms of podcast, then we are talking in terms of reaching out to a larger audience.

I was only drawing a parallel to Retro Cafe to demonstrate that in this very section/ forum, a show like Retro, which is light music of the yester years does not draw as many hits as a new age music does.

We are not just wanting to reach across to some members, some select audience.

The intention is larger and a wider audience.

For tht very reason Priya i feel we have to start wth very light classical music programs first. i gave bhaskar some ideas regd this. maybe we can select a raag and then songs from bollywood based on tht raag. this can be even from new movies. then make the program wth some explanations regd the raag. yes we can even add one vocal or instrumental audio of tht particular raag too to make it more clear.

I feel People have become more aware(of course those who have some good taste for music) to get their children classical music training. If the kid is talented the parents go to any extent to fulfill their wishes. Also with information technology it's easier to get the right information, every thing has become easily available. TV shows have become more inspiring to the younger generations to take interest.

In Bollywood, singers may come and go. But only those who are/were classical-trained, retained their positions and shined throughout. Today when we look back, it's only them who have made impressions on our minds. Even todays top singers also fall in the same genre(genre of getting classical music training). So, it's clear to any aspiring singer that he/she should be trained in classical music to reach the goal.

Though the quantity of today's singers outweigh the quantity of yesterday's singers, but of course the quality was better in the past.
