I tell them if they cannot emote the notes, if there is no real shruti in the music and singing, the songs just won't appeal.

Why can't he tell it to himself? 😕

Did anyone notice that Sharib did a far better job on the Aap Ka Suroor
song and that HH told him that deviation from HR's version was "an
intelligent decision" ?

One of the most disappointing points of this contest is that classical
singing is not appreciated. Sharib adds so much to the songs as does
Ujjaini and as did Hrishikesh -- I feel like no one notices or cares. While
I did not care for Vishwas's execution, he did try. Twinkle was also a
strong classical singer. But again not appreciated for that. Irfan, Saptak,
Niladri, Raktima, Sanchali -- all classically trained but not appreciated for
it.

HR while certainly talented is really the poster child of the degredation of
Indian film music. Of late, all of his songs are some permutation of the
white keys from D to D (Dorian mode). Perhaps his singing range is
limited to those few notes. But I really blame the public for loving this
garbage and not appreciating new songs or singers. HR has every right
to make a living and give hte public what it wants but I feel like he could
leverage his success into giving hte public new sounds and new voices
rather than the same old recylced crap.

For those of you who may think that I am needlessly attacking HR, I want
anyone with a piano or keyboard to get drunk, play the white keys fron D
to D in any fashion while a house beat is being played by your drum
machine -- instant Himmy Sufi song! The alcohol is necc to tolerate it for
more than a few minutes. The only saving grace of his songs is when a
classical singer like Sharib adds depth with tans and variations.

Does HR even use singers like HH? Would HH work with him? I mean
what's the point? HR is a young guy and a talented MD (recent work
notwithstanding) so I hope that he gets over his fake rock star phase and
gives industry fresh music. But more importantly, I hope that the public
embraces new sounds and new talent.

Sorry for this long post.

You have given a break and encouragement to a number of singers including Tulsi Kumar. What are some of the things you tell them?

Being associated with the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest has brought me close to many aspiring singers. One of the contestants, Vinit Singh, has sung for me in Rocky. Himani Kapoor is another talented singer. I ask them to listen to the best songs of Lataji (Mangeshkar), Ashaji (Bhosle), Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Alkaji (Yagnik). There are many more wonderful singers. I tell the new singers the importance of practice. And I try to inspire today's singers to sing like the legends. I tell them if they cannot emote the notes, if there is no real shruti in the music and singing, the songs just won't appeal.

Same sawaal jawaab each time - copy paste I guess - But this different bit struck me.

Wasn't he the one who said "Aaj kal rafi ko sunta kaun hai?" 😕

I noticed it too. I liked his version far better than the original. Good improvisation. May be Mr. Vishwas ought to learn from him. 😉
