Qamar Jalalabadi was born in Jalalabad in Pakistan in 1919. His father established the local branch of the Indian National Congress and the heady passion of the freedom struggle inspired him to write his first poems. Around the time he was to appear for his matriculation, he caught his first glimpse of films and promptly fell in love with them. He beeged two rupees from his mother, worked in a flour mill and stole and sold some of his sister's ornaments and ran away to Lahore. There, he got a job with the newspaper "Pratap".

In Lahore, he met Pandit Gobindram, Ghulam Haider and Dalsukh Pancholi. He wrote his first songs for the latter's Zamindar and "duniya me garibon ko aaraam nahin milta" was from that film went on to be a hit. He then went to Prabhat Films in Pune and worked on four films there before moving to Bombay.

He had memorable associations with Husnlal-Bhagatram (Pyar Ki Jeet, Badi Behan, Aansoo, Adl-E-Jahangir, Nargis) and O P Nayyar (Phagun, Howrah Bridge, Ragini, Kalpana) and Kalyanji- Anandji (Chhalia, Himalay Ki God Me, Upkar, Sachcha Jhoota) besides working with practically every other top music director of the Hindi film world - Anil Biswas, SD Burman, Khemchand Prakash, Ghulam Haider, Shyamsunder, Ravi, Madan Mohan, C Ramchandra & Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
