Fanaa music: Disappointing

Sukanya Verma | April 19, 2006 13:58 IST

The thing about hype is, it only exceeds.

Take Fanaa for instance. It's got Aamir Khan. That is enough to get the audience interested.

Kajol is his leading lady. That it happens to be her comeback film post-Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham only adds fuel to the hype factor. There is no way this hype will stop from building if it happens to be a Yash Raj film directed by one of its protges, Kunal Kohli (Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum).

Fanaa is right there in terms of all the promotional publicity surrounding it. But its soundtrack is a stinging disappointment. Jatin-Lalit's music hardly takes the uncharted route and is mostly pleasing. Here, in trying to do something different, J-L ends up dishing an uninspired score, which can be rated above average at best.

Special: Fanaa, revealed

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes have baby girl

Should Amitabh do a Lolita?

Vivek Oberoi: Not on a career slump

The album opens with Shaan and Kailash Kher's contrasting vocal presences in Chand sifarish. Well versed and rhythmic in melody, the vibrant number is an instant hit on the senses. Incidentally, the song features a whistle theme, which is the tune of the unused Yaara yaara from Hum Tum. Chand sifarish is featured once again in a zippy and rocking avatar as the club mix version, Fanaa for you by DJ Aqueel.

The first thing that strikes you about Mere haath mei is the arrangement by Salim-Sulaiman is clearly inspired by A R Rahman's style. Listen to it and you'll know what I mean. Be patient on this one, though. Rendered soulfully by Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan, the romantic rhapsody takes its own sweet time to grow on the listener. But the occasional voiceovers by Fanaa's lead protagonists -- Aamir Khan and Kajol -- grate on your nerves.

It's time for filmi jingoism in the form of Des Rangila. Basically a functional composition it is never close to extraordinary. The vibrancy and richness of Prasoon Joshi's pen particularly stand out. Even so the lacklustre Rangila relies on fancily uttered Vande Matarams, by the chorus, to force a listener to pay attention.

Unhurried and mild in its tempo and mood, Dekho na's diluted mushiness fails to ignite sparks. The strains are too sombre and hence become too bland for their own good.

Hum Tum's idle track Yaara yaara gains more mileage here. It is transformed into a full-blown fresh act with a new name, Chanda chamke. Babul Supriyo and Mahalaxmi Iyer along with Khan, Kajol and Master Akshay Bhagwat enthusiastically perform this tongue twister of a melody. Though limited musically, Chanda is entertaining nevertheless.

The lounge mix, Destroyed in love is a scattered compilation of bits and pieces of Fanaa songs. It is neither unconventionally experimental nor conventionally tuneful.

The subject of Fanaa is not fluffy. It's the love story between a terrorist and a blind woman after all. J-L's soundtrack fails to have intense character or lend passionate nuances to this complicated romance.

Aamir and Kajol to sing in Fanaa
IndiaFM | Monday, 03 April , 2006, 16:15
Yashraj Films first release of the year Fanaa is undoubtedly one of the most awaited releases of 2006.
What makes it more interesting is that the lead pair of the film Aamir Khan and Kajol have lent their voice for a couple of songs. Now we have heard Aamir go behind the microphone earlier too in Ghulam, Mangal Pandey and Rang De Basanti. What would be interesting is to see Kajol experiment with her vocal chords. Apparently both Aamir and Kajol have lent their voices for two songs in the film. The songs "Mere Haath Mein" and "Chanda Chamke" have been sung by them along with other known singers like Sonu Nigam, Babul Supriyo, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Sunidhi Chauhan. Following the recent trend of remixes, this album too has a remix of one of its songs "Chand Sifarish" by DJ Aqeel.

The audio of Fanaa releases worldwide on 12th April. The music is given by Jatin-Lalit and the lyrics are penned by Prasoon Joshi.

Although the music of Fanaa is not one of the best from Jatin Lalit, but it is certainly not disappointing. I think Subhash Jha's sister wrote the review here. 😆

Heres another review of the Fanaa music.

Fanaa Music Review 14-Apr-2006

I guess I can call this as "Much Awaited music album", after Rang De Basanti. Talking about music of the movie Fanaa. The music is given by Jatin Lalit. Track Listing is as follows:

Chand Sifarish - Shaan, Kailash Kher Mere Haath Mein - Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Aamir Khan, Kajol Des Rangila - Mahalaxmi Iyer Dekho Na - Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan Chanda Chamke - Babul Supriyo, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Master Akshay Bhagwat, Aamir Khan, Kajol Destroyed in Love [Lounge Mix] - Instrumental
  1. Fanaa For You [Chand Sifarish Club Mix] - DJ Aqeel

First song Chand Sifarish, is the one which is being played in the promos and creates lot of expectations when Kailash Kher adds his voice in the song but expectations ends up when you realize that he had sung only couple lines in the song….the song is good not bad but not upto the mark…to be frank I was expecting the song to be something else only..I was expecting some kind of fusion…

Second one Mere Haath Mein, this one gives better feelings when you hear Sonu Nigam (ouch he is Sonu Nigaam now) and Sunidhi Chauhan…slow song, very well sung…Amir Khan and Kajol have sung couple of lines in it…

Third one Des Rangila, gives classic kind of feeling, sung in some village or something…may be filmed on Kajol singing in Kashmir…this one is sung by Mahalaxmi Iyer, good lyrics. As name suggests, the song is on our country India..not bad, not good…ok ok song…

Fourth one…Dekho Na, this one seems to be better than other ones…very sweet song…Sunidhi and Sonu have sung it very well…specially Sunidhi…very nice song…

Fifth one..Chanda Chamke, this sounds like, song for kids…may be Kajol and Amir Khan's son singing it…Kajol teaching her son…and yeah Amir Khan also teaches his lessons in the song…nah..I didn't like it…

Sixth one…Destroyed in Love, this one is instrumental…Lounge Mix..they have mixed lounge kind of music with the theme music…pretty good…I liked it….

Seventh, the last one….Fanaa For You, this one is remix of the first song Chand Sifarish…this one gives some energy in the beginning…but there was no need for this mix…it just doesn't match with the fast theme…the song is better when it's slow…

Anyways, I have stopped playing that song and played Dekho Na song again…

So, let me sum it up…

Track Listing by Rating (Starting from good ones)

Dekho Na Mere Hath Mein Chand Sifarish Destroyed in Love (Instrumental) Des Rangila Fanaa For You
  1. Chanda Chamke

Comments

1. Ashwin - 14-Apr-2006

Even I downloaded the songs yesterday.

I liked 2-3 songs.. I am yet to listen for more than 3 times. Maybe you'll like it if you listen for many times.

2. Madhur Kapoor - 14-Apr-2006

i downloaded the songs yesterday and found 2-3 nice . but it takes time to like a song . There are a lot of songs which i didnt like at first but loved them after listening to them afterwards.

3. Manas - 15-Apr-2006

The first Chand Sifarish is good.It grows on you on listening two three times.
