As I have listened to the performances on this show, I feel a sense of disappointment about choice of song. For instance, what the Parineeta song that Hrishikesh and Prajakta sang today was nice enough as a song in a movie, but what does it do for them in this competition? Does it show off their singing range, their tunefulness, their sense of rhythm or their ability to emote or express through song?
I gather that the participants are given a short list of songs from which they pick, but I thought today (April 14), the choice was left to them. It seems to me that they are actively discouraged from stepping back in time past the 1990s, and perhaps it is in their interests, given the voting business to sing the songs that everybody likes.
Nevertheless, partly for my own gratification, I was wondering if we could compile a list of truly challenging duets that are out there--and overlooked. I could subdivide this endlessly into truly old (before 1960), old (1960s-80s), recent (1990s) and contemporary (2000-onwards). Or classical, folk, other. But I won't. I just want to remember that there are some lovely, challenging songs that we could be hearing.
To start this thread off:
Saavan aaye ya na aaye (Dil diya dard liya)
Teri bindiya re (Abhimaan)
Ajhun aaye baalma saavan beeta jaaye (Pyar kiye ja??)
Do deewane shaher mein (Gharaonda)
Hum aapki aankhon mein (Pyaasa)
Dekho rootha na karo (Tere Ghar ke Saamne)
Obviously, this is an off-the-cuff list and doesn't even begin to cover the possibilities. I hope that you will add to this so we can enjoy the idea of hearing these songs on SRGMP even if we never do.
