As I have listened to the performances on this show, I feel a sense of disappointment about choice of song. For instance, what the Parineeta song that Hrishikesh and Prajakta sang today was nice enough as a song in a movie, but what does it do for them in this competition? Does it show off their singing range, their tunefulness, their sense of rhythm or their ability to emote or express through song?

I gather that the participants are given a short list of songs from which they pick, but I thought today (April 14), the choice was left to them. It seems to me that they are actively discouraged from stepping back in time past the 1990s, and perhaps it is in their interests, given the voting business to sing the songs that everybody likes.

Nevertheless, partly for my own gratification, I was wondering if we could compile a list of truly challenging duets that are out there--and overlooked. I could subdivide this endlessly into truly old (before 1960), old (1960s-80s), recent (1990s) and contemporary (2000-onwards). Or classical, folk, other. But I won't. I just want to remember that there are some lovely, challenging songs that we could be hearing.

To start this thread off:

Saavan aaye ya na aaye (Dil diya dard liya)
Teri bindiya re (Abhimaan)
Ajhun aaye baalma saavan beeta jaaye (Pyar kiye ja??)
Do deewane shaher mein (Gharaonda)
Hum aapki aankhon mein (Pyaasa)
Dekho rootha na karo (Tere Ghar ke Saamne)

Obviously, this is an off-the-cuff list and doesn't even begin to cover the possibilities. I hope that you will add to this so we can enjoy the idea of hearing these songs on SRGMP even if we never do.

Oh Vanajakshiji, there are plenty...

Few that come to my mind are

Tasveer teri dil mein (Maya)

Abhi na jao chodkar (Hum dono)

Bahut shukriya badi meharbani (Ek musafir ek hasina)

Kora kagaz tha ye man (Aradhna)

Nein so nein nahi milao (Jhanak Jhanak payal baaje)

Tu chupi hai kahan (Navrang)

Jhoole mein pavan ke (Baiju Bawra)

and many many more. Sadly though, all the challenging ones that come to my mind are from the Golden era which mostly are never picked by contestants today. Among the recent songs, some of the AR Reman songs may be good picks. Hai Rama was a good pick I thought (I don't know how well it was delivered though).

I remember Mehmood (disguised as a music teacher with a beard) and Shobha Khote singing this song. Was it Ziddi?

Even Chura liya hai tumne (Yaadon ki Baaraat) is a duet.

The choice of 'Maahi ve' today, for instance, was not as good as 'Kucch to hua hai' from the same film would have been--in terms of what it offers a singer.

At the risk of outnumbering others' responses on this thread I started, I am going to add to the list:

Was watching Johny Mera Naam for a while and here is a nice duet from that film: :Khafa na hona, der se aayee... (interesting rather than challenging, but still...)

Others????

From the many visits and few replies to this thread, I wonder if the number of us who are really disappointed with the choice of song is in fact really small. As we get ready for two more days of "what's that song?!" or "why this song?!", do let us think of GOOD and CHALLENGING songs that will allow us to truly judge who can sing and who cannot.

Following the example of shadyhtown, I am posting this partly to push the topic back to the first page.

I too would love to hear someone attempt Kuhu Kuhu. PH would be my first choice for carrying it off.

It was so nice to hear old, if not always challenging, songs on Thursday last.
