Yes, you are correct. Like a piano, santoor is also a percussion instrument.

All percussion instrument are not rhythm instruments, and vice versa. Maraccas, cabaas, etc. are commonly used side-rhythm instruments, but aren't played by striking something.

I agree w/ you, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma has introduced some variations in playing the santoor - of late, he often plucks the strings for special effects.

There are 2 separate, unrelated ways to categorize instruments:

1. Percussion, String, Wind

2. Melodic, Rhythm etc.

But mine isn't an absolute word, there are different schools of thought. This is just one of them, that's all.
