Ok. This is for Varsha-ji, Srianne-ji and Zahida-ji. I hope you're listening, because I want to tell you a story.

A few years ago, in the city I used to live in, there was this homeless person who lived right outside my building. All the state psychiatric wards had been shut down due to lack of funding, and a lot of the inmates had been basically let out to fend for themselves on the street. I used to feel bad for them. They were after all helpless, so whenever I could, I would give my change, or sometimes buy them a meal from the 7-11.

Some people in my building used to complain about the bag-lady on our corner. She would stand at the street corner unkempt and smelly and rant and rave from time to time. They talked about calling the cops to throw her out. But the thing is, where else could she go? She was ill, after all. So, when I passed by her corner, I decided to give her some money as was my custom. But it turned out that this particular bag lady was so crazy that, if you offered her money, she just flung it back at you, all the while yelling with this big insane grin on her face. (Remind you of someone else you came across on this thread recently).

Now, what should I have done in this situation. Agree with my neighbors and have the lady removed? That wasn't fair. She couldn't help her condition. Offer her help? She didn't want any. Move? How could I be sure I wouldn't run into another one just like her across town?

You see, the problem wasn't with this lady - not strictly speaking. The problem was that I did not recognize the extent of her illness. Once I took that into account, my course of action was easy. I just steered clear of her. If she came upon me and started screaming, I just smiled at her reassuringly, and started crossing the street really fast...
