He arrived penniless, but went on to win Sa Re Ga Ma Pa
Debojit Saha from Assam has captured the heart of the nation
Express Features Service
Mumbai, February 25: AT music director Ismail Durbar's Oshiwara house—he was the mentor for the winner of Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 Debojit Saha—the latter is welcomed like a family member. He's just fulfilled the dream that Durbar and his family have cherished for eight months. On Friday night, after a scintillating performance, Saha—he hails from Assam—was chosen India Ki Voice, with over 2 crore votes cast in his favour.
By a narrow margin of 0.2 per cent, Vinit Singh from Lucknow emerged as runner-up. ''This victory is for my wife Bandana. She is the one who believed in me right from the beginning,'' says Saha, apparently exhausted after the contest. Saha and his wife came to Mumbai in July 2002 and spent over six months penniless. Prior to this, Saha served as a civil engineer in Silchar, Assam. ''My wife persuaded me to come to Mumbai. She said: 'You sing and I will work','' he says, adding the victory was like a dream come true for her. Reticent by nature, Saha did not stand out in the early stages of the competition, though he always performed well. ''I always pick slow romantic numbers, but on the A R Rahman special, I chose Humma, Humma and everyone was stunned that I could sing a song with so much attitude,'' he remembers. ''That was a turning point for me.'' At the finale, he also sang some tunes that had become famous on the show, like Ek Haseena Thi and a brand new composition by Durbar titled Tu Dil Hai Mera. As for the allegations that the songs sung at the finale were prerecorded, he chooses to maintain his silence. ''That's something you have to speak to the channel about,'' he says. As the winner, Saha has signed a two-year recording deal with HMV and has been given an apartment to live in in Mumbai for that duration. ''I don't know the location yet. All this while, I was living in a rented flat in Malad. But they'll take it back after two years... I wish it were permanent,'' he sighs. Saha says he wasn't shocked with the results, because over the last few weeks, everyone from spotboys to background dancers had assured him he would win. ''Today, I found out that after I won, Ismailji and his wife walked from Andheri to Mahim because they had promised God that they would if I won. I feel like my victory is more for them,'' he adds. There were certain promises he'd made himself that the 28-year-old intends to live up to. ''I have to go home and meet my parents and take their blessings. Then I vowed to donate time and money to the residents of the J J Dharamshala, that was my New Year resolution,'' he adds. Apparently, when people at the home for the aged heard that Friday was the day the results would be out, they prayed for him all through the day. As for his mentor, Durbar just can't stop beaming. ''Debojit will emerge as one of the best vocalists in the country. I promise you that,'' he smiles. Source: http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=171368

Shukr karo mare hue ki yaad mein Zinda logon ki arthi nahin utha raha ho...woh dono jahan ke logon ki kadar kar raha hai, koi ehsaanfaramoshi nahin ki hai...lekin yeh sab tum log kya samjhoge, tumhari akal to topi ke bahar saans nahin leti.
