Lets get this, for those who think that "lengthy qawwalis are boring", this track is not for them. But if people really appreciate Indian classical tunes with a hint of modern tones blended into them, then this track quite makes the cut.
This song selection has been pretty challenging for me, but I had to go with it. Javed ali is a man of immense depth of talent, and in this qawwali, sung with kailesh kher, he shines throughout. The crux is that in today's fast paced life, its really hard to get quality music and that too a "slow motion" song but mark my words, its these songs that form the pinnacle of modern Indian classique. The music of Delhi-6 is one of ARR's best works and it showcases his different style.
Remember "piyaa haji ali" from fiza? It was too composed by ARR (that sole track-all others of Fiza were anu malik compositions) and some hints of that tune can be seen into this. Very good thing and very enjoyable. The scale is kept at a limited range-say 1 high to 1.5 low, but given that limited range, things are kept simple. A qawwali is not meant to sing and shout over the rooftop. It ruins the essence of that samah- that of peace, pleasure and purity. But thankfully, Javed Ali's back to basics approach and amazing coordination with kailash kher has worked wonders. His singing, superb composure of voice at high notes without loosing the melody (most important) and above all, clarity plus tonal quality make this one of my personal favourites. Half way through, the length can prove to be a big deterrent and it does tend to get boring, yes granted but the quality is maintained, again a good thing.
Another highpoint is the quality of jugalbandi at the end of second verse, its just amazing to say the least. Add another plus-melodious ARR trademark music-takes listening to a new pleasure altogether.
An all round combination of tune, tone, voice, quality, scale and music makes this a strong contender for a perfect all round qawwali track, so it would have got a perfect 10. Until that other song of Kailesh kher literally blew me away.
Comparisons are inevitable, so this gets a 9 plus an applause.
9/10.👏
