British doctorate for Punjabi singer Gurdas Mann

NEW DELHI: Renowned Punjabi singer Gurdas Mann will be honoured with a doctorate in world music from University of Wolverhampton, UK.

Mann, known for giving Punjabi Music a global face, will be receiving the honour on September 7 and join the elite club of Paul McCartney, Bill Cosby and Bob Dylan.

"I am both touched and thankful for this recognition and I will continue entertaining my audience like always," Mann said in a press statement.

Mann, 53, who has enjoyed a 25-year-old career so far, started with a performance of his hit number 'Dil Da Maamla Hai' on Doordarshan in 1980. There was no looking back thereafter as the song was his ticket to superstardom.

Mann gained world wide recognition by winning many international awards. The singer, who has recorded more than 30 albums, has also been credited with raising Punjabi folk music from a regional level to global platform. He is also a successful actor in Punjabi cinema.

"The University is absolutely delighted that Gurdas Mann has found time from his busy international touring schedule to receive an honorary doctorate. Gurdas Mann's contribution to music is immense and he is a real inspiration for our students," John Pymm, Dean of the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure which is presenting the honorary award said.

Mann, will also be touring UK next year and perform in six major cities including London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Wolverhampton, Leicester and Leeds. He will also perform at the Royal Albert Hall in April.

"I am extremely honored that I have been given this opportunity to perform at this beautiful historical landmark and appreciate that I am one of the few artists that have had the privilege to perform at such an extraordinary place," he added.
