Annapurna Devi - rare recordings

It is sad that very few of her recordings are in public domain. Her life was not a happy one. However the few recordings existing today show her rare capabilities. Many hold that she was greater than Ravi Shankar.

Sarode maestro Aashish Khan; renowned flautists Hariprasad Chaurasia and Nityanand Haldipur; Sitarists Chandrakant Sardeshmukh, the late Sudhir Phadke, and Professor Rooshikumar Pandya; and Sarodists Pradeep Barot, Amit Bhattacharya and Basant Kabra. The list of other occasional students would include Sandhya Apte (Sitar), Amit Hiren Roy (Sitar), Stuti Dey (Sarode), Uma Guha (Sarode), Milind Sheorey (Flute), and Kokila Rai (Surbahar).

Here is the story in short. Annapurna Devi, daughter of legendary Allauddin Khan and sister of Ali Akbar Khan is inddeda much better sitarist than Ravi Shankar.

She was in love with Pandit Nikhil Banerjee.

Ravi Shnkar wanted to learn everything from Allaududdin Khan. Inorder to do so he had to be his family member. So he (being a ladies man) started flirting with Annapurna Devi and married her.

After a few years he divorced her and Annapurna Devi went into exile and never performed in public again 😆
