Disclaimer: Nothing to do with Television 😆
Hi friends,
I am sure you all have sometimes came across so many popular websites which are happily advertising "free screensavers", "free wallpapers" or the famous "free smileys" in a world where there is nothing called as "free lunch". So did you ever thought how come they are advertising BIG time for FREE stuff well the truth that its bundled with Adwares or unwanted softwares too.
And there are high chances that many of our India Forums members may have already fallen for them and have installed them without knowing that it may contain adwares / spywares or unnecessary softwares.
For example:
SmileyCentral.com
It has been found that they installs other unrelated programs such as MyWebSearch Toolbar.
ScreenSavers.com
Downloads on this site that some people consider adware, spyware, or other unwanted programs.
Freeze.com
After entering an unique e-mail address on this site, we received 227 e-mails PER WEEK. They were somewhat spammy. This is quite a popular website and the co-founders were recently awarded Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of the year 2006.
Thats not all there are are many such sites like wallpapers.com, screenscenes.com and many more...
Everyone complains about the Problem! What's the solution?
a) Never leave your emails on sites which are spammy or the ones which you cant trust.
b) Never download unwanted executable files (.EXE, .COM and others).
c) Keep your system regularly updated with latest Virus Definition and also if you are a windows user visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
d) Install McAfee SiteAdvisor which helps in identifying a lot of sites on which warns and informs about the site we visit and their whether they are safe to visit and whether we can trust them with our email. (Spam is a BIG problem and takes around 15-20 days of mine daily to clear them from my mailbox )
A great FREEWARE and a must Download. Currently in the Top Rated 5 on Cnet's Download.com 😊
About the software:
McAfee SiteAdvisor is a security add-on for your Internet Explorer browser that helps you identify sites that are linked to spyware, adware, spam, viruses, browser-based attacks, phishing, or online fraud. The SiteAdvisor service is based on a huge database with detailed test results for more than 100,000 pieces of software and covers more than 90% of the world's Web traffic.
The program integrates with search engine results from popular search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) and also adds an icon to the browser toolbar that indicates whether a site is safe to use, or should be used with caution. If SiteAdvisor has negative information for a site, you can review a very detailed report that shows any spam received from that site, harmful downloads, and association with other sites. An excellent browser add-on, that provides an in-depth site analysis that is based on actual test results, rather than assumptions.
I would recommend all the members to install it.
Cheers,
Vijay
