Dr Anuj Saxena, the man we know as the original Abhay from Sony soap, Kkusum is the Marketing Director of the Rs 350-crore Elder Group of Companies, ranked No. 29 in IMS-March 2006. Last year, he launched his own production company, Maverick Productions, which has produced various ad films.

The firm's next project is the serial Kulvaddhu, which goes on air this month, besides the Fardeen Khan and Sushmita Sen-starrer, Dulha Mil Gaya. When he is not a corporate head honcho, the 39 year-old is the protagonist in Sri Adhikari Brothers' serial, Risshton Ki Dorr.

He recently threw open the doors of his restaurant, Blue Waters. This man pursues multiple careers every 24 hours, where others can't manage one.

Case study 1

Actor Anuj Saxena got famous on the small screen as the protagonist in Kkusum
Anuj Saxena, Actor, restaurateur, corporate and producer

Wakes up: At 4.30 am. His four Labradors make sure he is up on time, every morning.
Turns actor: At 7.30 am; only if he has a morning shift. Otherwise, he is on the sets in the afternoon.
Turns corporate: At 9 am on days, if he does not have an early morning shoot. He pays quick visits to Maverick Production as well as Blue Waters restaurant, through the day.
Turns restaurateur: 8 pm onwards. Anuj makes sure his guests are entertained and well looked after. He takes office files home to work on before hitting the bed.
Goes to sleep: At 2 am, after completing his financial paperwork.

How Anuj Saxena does it

I believe in utilising my time optimally. Time management is the key.
Each of my ventures has a great team backing it. These people take things forward. You must decentralise.

If you are a control freak, you'll end up being bogged down with all the work, leaving you no time to relax, let alone handle multiple careers.

Case study 2

Lester turns into financial advisor, every afternoon
Lester Anthony D'souza, 27, Personal trainer at Talwalkar's, Bandra branch Financial advisor at Max New York Life Opened Mastermind Creations, a small Beta tape export firm

Wakes up: At 5.30 am.
Turns personal trainer: Between 6 am to 9 am. He bikes it to Bandra from his Andheri residence in 20 minutes. He also freelances as trainer to a Worli resident from 10 am to 11 am, after which it's back to Bandra to train members till 2 pm.

Turns financial advisor: After 2 pm. Lester jets off to the Borivali office of Max New York Life to complete paperwork. Next up are meetings with his insurance and mutual fund clients at the office or their residence.
Turns entrepreneur: At 10 pm, when he returns home. Anthony works on the Beta tapes there, and sends off emails from his personal computer.
Goes to sleep: At 1 am.

Juggler of all trades: Lester trains a client at the gym
How Lester does it

My job automatically gives me a workout, but unless you are a personal trainer, you need to get enough exercise to boost your energy levels.
Avoid coffee and stimulants. They are instant pick-me-ups, but leave you lethargic a few minutes later.

Stress is unavoidable but it can be minimised if you plan your day well, and in advance.

Anuj and lesters' 8 point guide

1. Check your main employer's policies about holding outside employment before you even consider looking for a second job. Understand your reasons for taking a second job.

2. If your reasons are purely monetary, you may be able to talk to your current employer to give you extra shifts rather than take on a second job.

3. Moonlight in short doses, on a trial basis, before jumping in to the routine headlong. You have to know what you are getting into, before realising that you can't take the pressure.

4. Your second job should be something that interests you, especially if your first is a boring, clerical one. Try something fun or start your own business. Consider second jobs that are less stressful.

5. Your offices should be in close proximity to each other, or to your home. Your time will be limited enough without having to add a long commute to your schedule.

6. Reduce your load. If you are working multiple jobs, it's probably time to cut some of those extracurricular activities.

7. Carve out time for significant others. You must find a way to schedule some time with your family and friends, if you don't want relationships to suffer. Check with your partner before signing the appointment letter.

8. Quit when it's time — after you have reached your financial goal or are breaking down mentally or physically.

Why you should have multiple jobs

Apart from the additional income, having three jobs keeps monotony away. I get a workout without having to shell out money at the gym, and I also meet interesting people through all three careers.

If you have an ironclad schedule, nothing will stop you from having enough time for EVERYTHING. As I read somewhere — it's the busiest people who have the most time.

Why it's tough

You will have to make do with four to five hours of sleep, although you get used to it eventually.

It is especially stressful to handle the guilt that comes with being unable to devote time to your family, but it's a price you have to pay. Take Sundays off and try to spend the entire day with family.

Can women handle more than one job, better?

This might be true since women are born multi taskers. At least, the Americans think so. Recent US federal Labor Statistics Bureau (BLS) data indicates 64.5% more women than men are taking two or more jobs to support their families, and they are succeeding because women are born multi taskers.

Male brains are about 10% larger than female brains, but women have more nerve cells in certain areas. Women also tend to have a larger corpus collusum — the group of nerve fibres that connects left and right hemispheres. That makes women faster at transferring data between the computational, verbal left half and the intuitive, visual right half. Result: More flexibility
