Sampada Vaze in Germany

No 'brown'ie points for Sampada

The actress says she faced racial profiling at Heathrow airport during her return journey from Germany

Sapana Patil Poojary

Sampada aka Tejaswini of Risshton Ki Dor had gone to Germany with a bunch of her close friends to unwind. Little did she know that her vacation would end up as a nightmare. The actress had a harrowing time at the Heathrow airport on her way back to Mumbai. She also complains of facing racial profiling by the British Airways staff.

Heathrow airport was where all the trouble began; her flight from Frankfurt to Heathrow had got delayed and hence she missed her connecting flight to Mumbai. At the airport, she was not only ignored by the British Airways staff (the airlines she was flying) but was also put up in a seedy hotel.

Sampada recounts her experience, "On my journey back home, we (my friends and I) were flying to Mumbai via Heathrow. The British Airways flight that flew us from Frankfurt to Heathrow was late. Thus, we missed the connecting British Airways flight to Mumbai. When we landed at Heathrow there were no British Airways staff members to inform us that we had missed the flight. Finally, we found a counter where we tried to seek assistance. But the man rudely asked us to wait.

He made us wait for 25 minutes and then agreed to put us up in a hotel which we later found was rundown. We were even asked not to talk loudly. But when a German lady went up to them and asked them for help, they attended to her immediately and were very cordial with her.

We were shocked at the discrimination. Even on the flight,

the attendants were far from cordial. I have travelled abroad umpteen number of times, but I've never had such a bad experience."

Juhi and Anuj: Love revisited

they met, they talked, they laughed: Anuj Saxena and Juhi Parmar pics/Yogen Shah
The former flames have been spotted in each other's company, sparking off rumours of a relationship
Shaheen Parkar
shaheen@mid-day.com

Former flames Anuj Saxena and Juhi Parmar are back together. The duo was spotted at a screening of Lage Raho Munnabhai at a multiplex a few nights back. A fortnight ago, the couple came in and left the venue together at producer Manish Goswami's party for Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai. Hushed whispers from onlookers prove that there is definitely something brewing yet again between the two.
Raised eyebrows
It may be recalled that Juhi had once been linked with the doctor-turned-actor. Both she and Anuj acknowledged their friendship but never said anything more than that. The first hint of Juhi and Anuj being back together was at Anuj's birthday party in July. Juhi was present till the wee hours of the morning and eyebrows were raised when Anuj's mother was seen showering her affections on Juhi.
So have Anuj and Juhi bonded again? When asked about it, Anuj refused to say anything. He stuck to "no comments." Juhi, on the other hand says, "Anuj and I are friends and can't friends go to see a film together? We are very close friends; that's it. I was there for the Kituu party as I was invited by Imtiaz Punjabi, creative head, Siddhant Cinevision, who are the producers of Kituu. Imtiaz is also a good friend of mine. Many people were invited for the party including Anuj. And if he was also there; there were so many other people there too!"
Failed marriage
Both have known each other since the time they acted together in the Star Plus afternoon drama, Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan almost four years ago. Juhi plays the title role while Anuj played her husband, Jatin Wadhwa. After about 40 episodes, Jatin was shown dead and Kumkum began a new life journey. Off-screen too, both became busy with their acting commitments. Anuj featured in Kkusum, Saara Akaash and Prratima, while Juhi preferred to stay put with Kumkum. Anuj made a brief appearance in Kumkum last year. He is now seen in Sony's Risshton Ki Dor.
Though Juhi has never been linked with anyone else, Anuj moved on and settled for an arranged marriage to New Delhi-based Ishmit Dhadial in February 2004. But within a year, the wedding ended in a divorce. Incidentally, Juhi had even attended Anuj's marriage reception.
Taking their time
Post his divorce, Anuj immersed himself in work. He launched his production house, Maverick, as well as turned restaurateur with Blue Waters at Andheri. This is besides his family business (Elder Pharma).
Says an onlooker, "It appears that both are back together. They are taking their time, though. Juhi has always been cautious while Anuj is busy with work. After a failed marriage, he doesn't want to hurry into another relationship."

SaharaOne initiates prime time revamp; 8 shows on the anvil

By BIJOY A K
Indiantelevision.com Team

(19 October 2006 9:00 pm)

MUMBAI: SaharaOne Television is about to make a big splash in the Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) space by introducing not less than eight new programmes. The channel, having set an ambitious 2006-end target of achieving the third position in the market, hopes a near complete revamp of the sensitive 8 pm to 11 pm prime time band would drive the turnaround.

document.write("< marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 width=440 height="+linescenterfirstht+" border=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"/templates/itv/line_center_first.htm\"></>") < marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="https://www.india-forums.com/templates/itv/line_center_first.htm" Border=0 width=440 scrolling=no height=0></>

"By the end of 2006, we want to become the third most successful general entertainment channel in the Hindi space. We will be unleashing a series of programming activities in the coming weeks. Two new soaps Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye and Solhah Singaarr will start the proceedings and four more soaps will be launched in the prime time band. The picture will be complete with the introduction of two big ticket format shows," Sahara One Media and Entertainment Limited CEO Shantonu Aditya tells indiantelevision.com.
The channel's most successful soap Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki will however escape the revamp exercise. Another prime time soap Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan is giving way for Solhah Singaarr. SaharaOne is yet to decide the slot for Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye, according to Aditya.

Speaking on the reality shows in the pipeline, Aditya said the channel was yet to finalise certain details and would be sharing information on the initiatives at a later period. However he hinted that one of the reality shows planned would be celebrity-based.

"We had been planning to launch a celeb-based reality dance show Superstars. But, looking at the way the existing celeb dance shows are faring in the rating charts, we have decided to take a re-look at Superstars," Aditya says.

When the sliding market share of SahraOne (based on July to September CS4+ HSM Tam ratings) is brought to his attention, Aditya counters by saying that the channel has already been showing signs of a good comeback.

"Last week, we have improved our GRPs to 87 from 60 of the previous week. The reach has been improved to 51 per cent. Our belief is that the latest programming efforts, backed by the strong movie properties we have, will strengthen the channel's position tremendously," he says.

Going traditional during diwali

Diwali is an occasion which no one wants to miss celebrating but in today's
times, with the fast pace of life, it has become just another extended
weekend where people look for getaways or else go out for dinner or watch a
movie. But Gita Hari stumbled upon some television actors who still believe
in celebrating the joyous festival of lights in all its traditional glory, replete with pujas and the exchange of goodies.
Apara Mehta: The famous Savita Bhabhi and Tulsi's ma-in-law of Kyunki… is a typical Gujarati and believes in tradition to the T. "For Dhanteras,I have gifted myself, rather exchanged my old Indica car for Indigo. Though
we buy sweets I have my maid prepare chivda and a few mithais at home as well as it is customary to do so. If I get the time, I will personally decorate the house with rangoli and diyas"
Inspite of being separated from her husband and theatre actor Darshan
Jariwalla, she spends the day with her in-laws as she says, "I am modern in
thinking but very traditional at heart. I still go to my in-laws' place at
Santa Cruz to take their blessings. We Gujjus have fixed lunch and dinner
for Diwali - for instance, if I am invited over for lunch at my jethani's
(sis-in-law) place, they come over to my place for dinner. I believe Diwali
is the time to be with your kith and kin." Does that include Darshan as
well?
Elaborating further, she reveals, "Yes, Darshan too comes to his parents'
place and as always I will invite him over. It is a marriage of 25 years and
I am still waiting for him."
Ketaki Dave: She recently made waves when she participated with husband Rasik Dave in Nach Baliye on star One but is still remembered best for her performance as 'Arara..ra..raa' of Kyunki ki.. Ketaki too celebrates Diwali in a traditional manner as she gets into the details, "on Dhanteras we doLakshmi Pujan and Rasik has gifted me a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond finger ring for our daughter Riddhi. My maharaj (cook in Gujarati)
has prepared kaju katli, mohantal, chakli and chivda." The next day that is the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) the actor will prepare dal vadas and inkeeping with the time honoured custom, they will take it to the crossing of char raastas without uttering a word and throw it there to ward off evil. On Diwali day they perform chopda puja and of course the rangolis, diyas and
sparklers.

She has bought a salwar-kameez for her daughter and a lovely, sequined sari
and a gorgeous salwar-kameez for herself. Rasik does not go for traditional
clothes, so it is a pair of trousers and shirt for him. And And she has already begun to receive gifts, the first one has come from her designer Rezda, "a
beautiful 5-diya aarti filled with sweets," she enthuses while Rasik
jovially reminds her that it is his gift that came first!
Indira Krishnan: Though this south Indian beauty may be playing mother Meera to Kanchi Kaul in Ek Ladki Anjaani si on Sony Tv and Neela to Parak Madan in Saathi Re but is quite young herself. Still she believes in observing the
rituals of the festival like, "being a Tamilian, I will take the ritual oil bath and spend the day with my husband and my mother, who prepares South Indian sweets and savouries." Her Maharashtrian husband Rajesh Ranshinge, who directs Akela on Sony, took her out for dinner and gifted her a gold bracelet from D'damas for Dhanteras. Her Rajasthani cook has made karanjis and mohantal and Diwali day she says, "I will draw rangolis, light fancy diyas and distribute home-made sweets among friends." This lovely lady is looking forward to spending time with her husband as she is busy shooting on other days.
Rupa Divatia: This elegant lady who played mother to the famous Abhay Kapoor of Kkusum on Sony, is in real life quite fond of Nausheen and Anuj Saxena whom she considers as her own children and, "I normally give gifts to them and this year too we have planned to have a small get-together. Usually I go to Ahmedabad to be with my parents and my in-laws. We do Sri Puja, being a
Gujju, I do Swatika rangolis, decorate the house with thorans and light diyas." Rupa decks herself up with traditional saris and jewellery on all four days and buys a gold coin on Dhanteras. On the goodies front, she has dhudhi halwas and coconut barfis and farsans prepared at home

Friday, October 20, 2006 19:50 IST

After the success of offbeat serials like 'Sati', 'Kituu Sab Jaanti Hai', 'Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki' and 'Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan', Sahara One has launched a new serial 'Solhah Singaarr'. One girl, six sons, ego issues and two soaps
I Piyush Roy
J oining the recent deluge of betiyaan across channels in the genre of fiction pro gramming, Sahara One on Thursday introduced two new primetime dailies with a beti and a bahu in the driver seat.
"While Solhah Singarr is the story of Meerra (Akangsha Rawat) in the modern Bharadwaj family of Banaras where women uphold their family values, yet are progressive, the oth er show Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye is about how a bahu can never become the beti of the household she is married into," informed Kalyan Sundaram, Sahara One's head of programming for fiction.
Boasting of some good production values though the soaps veer around the antics of two new faces, it was the ageing head of families of the two shows who drew maximum curiosity at the launch do.
Solhah Singaarr has Sudha Chandran finally putting the grey in her hair, as Ammaji the head of the Bharadwaj family where unfolds the story of the soap. By the looks, it seemed like yet another betiyaan being paraya dhan saga, with Ammaji shown moaning about the lack of a grandson in her household of four sons and many granddaughters. The show's other star attractions include Mrinal Kulkarni (as Meerra's mother) and Anuj Saxena. Show producer Jay Mehta, how ever insisted that its "USP lay in its story, while it's 'different' backdrop of Banaras would be appreciated," adding, "We have done a significant amount of outdoor shoot at five times the normal cost." Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye marks the comeback of veteran actor Vikram Gokhale in Hindi soaps as Vijaypath Raichand, a business tycoon with six sons, who go their own way because of ego clashes. "The serial revolves around the second bahu Krishna (Gunjan Walia) who in spite of being abandoned by her husband, tries to get the warring family members together with the help of her youngest brother-in-law played by Chaitanya Chaudhary," informed producer Naved Antulay.
Taking the opportunity to clarify on the recurrent postponements of the channel's reality show Superstars, Sahara One CEO, Shantonu Aditya said, "The delay is because the concept of Superstars needed modification. The project has not been abandoned, and it will be launched soon with necessary changes based on market research once the new format is ready."

Anuj Saxena has big animation plans

He charmed you as Abhay in Sony's Kkussum. But acting has never been enough for him and he has been aching to go beyond his company's pharma venture, Elder Pharma. Hence, he set up a production house, Maverick, then he dived into the restaurant business with Blue Waters. Now Anuj Saxena is hoping to prove a big draw in the animation business.

His company Maverick recently picked up a 51 percent equity stake in film restoration, colour correction and animation studio Sankranti Productions promoted by Rajeev Dwivedi. Sankranti was responsible for the colour correction of Mughal E Azam which was re-released a couple of years ago rather successfully. The studio has tied up with various production houses both in India and abroad for other such ventures.

Says Anuj "As a content provider, I want to synergise between TV production and animation and may be produce full fledged animation movies. Not just this, but I also want to create fresh animated characters for my shows."

Sankranti Creations shall dedicate itself to outsourcing animation and special effects. With the take over by Maverick, Sankranti plans to set up a large production studio with state-of -the-art equipment and hardware and software like SGI, 3DMax and SoftImage, SFX and Processing motion capture facilities.

Adds Saxena, "The Indian Animation sector is set to boom in the coming years in view of the inherent advantage it offers to the world in terms of superior quality of trained work force, lower fees and no government controls."

The question that begs asking Anuj is: will you star in them? Will audiences now go ga-ga over you as an animated character?

"I call myself a creative businessman"

There's no stopping Anuj Saxena. A workaholic to the core, the suave and sophisticated actor turned producer is now aiming to fly higher. He calls himself a 'Creative Businessman' someone who loves to read scripts while cracking global deals.
Having floated Maverick about a year ago, Anuj is now busy readying his first soap for Sony and a movie which is due to release by Jan 2007. But that's not it, the actor who's currently being seen in Sony's Risshton Ki Dorr is gunning for the big fish. No wonder wonder he along with his core team are off to Cannes to attend MIPCOM, the world's biggest TV content marketplace.
In an exclusive chat with Tellychakkar.com Anuj gets candid about his future plans as an actor producer, on Risshton Ki Dor and his equation with the queen bee of soaps Ekta Kapoor.

You have recently picked up a stake in animation studio Sankranti Productions promoted by Rajeev Dwivedi ?.
The animation market is growing by leaps and bounds. And now as a content creator in the TV as well as the films market, this looked like the next big logical step for me. I want to create synergies between both these ventures. I don't just want to do family soaps or typical Bollywood masala flicks, but even animated films.
I seek inspiration from shows like The Simpsons, an animated programme which is the longest running American sitcom. So, we still have a long way to go as far as content goes. When it comes to films, we're still looking at Hanuman and Krishna which are two dimensional; we have move towards 3-D. The cost of making an animated project is on a higher side, but then it crosses all boundaries and reaches out to many more viewers.

Don't you think you have your hands in too many pies? Are you a hands on bussinessman?
No, I don't think so. I don't want to restrict myself. I call myself a creative businessman. I love to be charged all the time. I want to expand in all the different direction. Personally, I have a creative bent of mind so I just don't think money but like to be creatively involved. I call myself a creative businessman. I call myself a creative businessman. The next big challenge is always to find the right people, and then to get the scripts right. Also, the content business is all about conviction. I don't say that people work for me rather I say that my people work with me.u

MYou're ready with your first baby which will hit the tube in November? So, are you playing it safe with a typical family drama?
Ya, I am ready with my first production for Sony TV. I can't reveal too much about the show at this stage. Currently, we are in the process of finalizing the name of the show as well as the final starcast.

Are you looking at scripts personally? And what plans for the near future/?

I am pretty hands on with thing. I do read scripts because I am putting in the money. So, its better to be convinced about projects. We're also shooting a couple of pilots and hopefully Maverick will have three to four shows on air by next year and a movie by 2007.

There's a buzz that Rishton Ki Dor is going off-air? Your character Suhas hasn't really excited viewers as compared to Abhay of Kkusum?
II've heard about it but they have not yet informed us. I think the soap has lost track from its original story. When you change the track so many times in six months, you're bound to lose audiences. I am sure viewers are very confused about the real track of the story. Its just been six months, if the producers are really convinced about the show, I am sure they can still revive it. I have been married for eight years now and it hurts when I see marriages breaking.

DYou've gone on record saying you always want to continue acting? So what next after this serial?Do you regret being a part of a flop show?
No not really. It started off on a good note and the concept was fine was targeted at the middle class audiences in the afternoon slot. The story about a family and oldest brother's struggle, along with three sisters to keep the family composed after the mother's death. I was tired of playing an unfaithful husband so I was quite excited about the character Suhas

Will we also see dancing behind trees?
I No, not really. I might dance to a totally different tune. I am looking at doing meaty and off beat roles.

You rose to fame as Abhay in Sony's Kkusum. But later there were rumours about your rift with Ekta. So, will you ever act in a Balaji show again?

I've learned 'never to say never' in this world. The world is a very small place and the television industry even smaller. So, I don't know what future holds for me. And life is too short to really hold grudges against anyone. I believe in concentrating on my work.

But then have you patched up with Ekta?

There are really no personal issues or grudges that I have against her. But now, I am a producer myself so a rival so-to-speak.I don't know what future holds for me, but if I ever do then the economics of working together will be different.
