"What?! No ways! I am so totally not gonna…."
"Yuvraj…tum aaj raat mere saath dinner ke liye aa rahe ho and that's final!"
"But dad…and am NOT gonna do this!" "DAD!!!" Yuvi yelled after him but to no avail…his father had already left, his car leaving behind a cloud of dust in which he coughed. He kicked at a nearby stone angrily. How could his father be so manipulative? Yes, he called his father that because he no longer trusted him. He had long since known what a cold hearted man Yashwant Dev was. Yuvi had already kicked him out of his life once…but still the man came back…not out of love for his youngest son..no..but because he needed Yuvi so that he could show him off to his foreign friends. He was supposed to join his father in some political agenda of his, which required pleasing his business partners. Yuvi had also realized, from between his father's words that one of his "foreign" friends had brought his daughter with him, and so his father was so keen to get him along. Obviously, he expected Yuvi to take her around and charm her up and thus win her father's favour too. Yes, he was very good at charming people up, especially girls and normally he loved it but this time he refused to agree since it was sure to be part of his father's dirty tricks. He was sick and tired of the man and also loathed his political life. The only reason why he tolerated the man was because he was his father…and nothing else.
He went away angrily towards his shed…the only place, apart from his mom's, where he could find a bit of sanity...yes he called it his shed, atleast in his mind. He was one of the only students in the school who used it regularly and was, maybe, the sole person who appreciated its soothing tranquility...
He went inside and started playing his guitar…the music calming his anger...as nothing else could… giving him the strength he needed at that time… As his fingers moved over the strings, closing his eyes, thinking of nothing else but the music he was playing, his thoughts went back to his mom and how much he loved her. He smiled…she was his one pillar of strength as music was another pillar… and he wasn't planning to let go of wither…
Half an hour later, the Yuvi that left was almost similar… well, almost, if you did not take into account his eyes…which had lost their earlier turmoil and looking relaxed… making all the difference to his face…
*
"No no Mumma…you agreed to this! Ab MP nahin aa sakti bcoz she's got her volleyball practice..she's got a big game this week! And Vrinda ek badi dar pok hai toh main kya karu? Uski masi usse nahin bhejegi! I dunno mumma…I am going! Alone…if need be!"
"Par mummum…it's so dangerous. Agar tumhein kuch ho gaya toh? Main apne aapko kabhi maaf nahin kar paungi!"
"Mumma…itna filmi dialogue mat mariye…yeh real life hai..aapka koi film shoot nahin!"
"Arrey wohi toh ain keh rahi hoon! Yeh real life hai….with real dangers! What if…"
"Haan haan mumma I know…err…mujhe kuch sunai nahin de raha hai…byee…main aaplo 10 din baad milungi!!!!!" And she hung up her phone. Ashi could not wait to get out of school…she had planned her trip since days…she had wanted to go since a long time. She had geared up her bike for this trip. After her talk with her mom, she went straight to the garage where her bike was kept along with the rest of her belongings. She put her backpack on her shoulders and then slowly took out her bike, taking care not to make too much noise. She wanted as little people to see her as was possible. As she came towards the gate, she casually sneaked past the watchman and out to…freedom.
Just as she was about to start though, a dark figure ran towards her and jumped on her bike. She yelled in shock but a hand was quickly put on her face.
"Shut up wacko! You'll rat me out or what?"
"Yuvi…." She breathed out slowly

"Yuvi…." She breathed out slowly in and then turned around at him in utter surprise.
"What…what're you doing here?" Yuvi didn't reply motioned for her frantically to take off…his eyes on the narrow road off Maurya from where a beam of a car's ight was coming.
"What?" she asked again confused.
"Just take off..come on ashi…please," said Yuvi and he hastily grabbed hold of the bike handle from behind and put on the accelerator. The bike zoomed away, just as the car came fully into view. Yuvi kept his head low on her shoulder, hiding behind ashi as much as possible and still not giving her control of the bike. They drove like for about 10 minutes at the end of which Ashi was highly annoyed with him.
"Now, will you please give me control of my bike?" she asked him emphasizing the "my".
"No. We need to get away from here as quickly as possible. Dad's dumb henchmen will be after us soon."
"We? Look psycho, mujhe koi shauk nahin hai tumhaare saath hide and seek khelne ka. Tum aur tumhare dad…dono milke khelo…waise bhi both are dumb,"
"You keep telling yourself that wacko,' he said still checking the rearview mirror for any following car.
"Yuvi stop the bike now or else I'll make you stop," she said grabbing the handles and trying to brake.
"Come on Anvesha..just a bit more…please…then you can go wherever you wanna go." His eyes met hers in the mirror and she softened at the look in their dark depths.
"Fine," she grumbled grudgingly as he grinned back at her in the mirror.
"By the way, where are you going…with all this bag n all?" he asked, glancing at the mirror again to check for the car which had disappeared by now.
"Ladakh," was the reply.
"You're going on a bike to ladakh????"
"Obviously psycho!" she replied rolling her eyes as thought it was the most normal thing for a girl to frisk off on a bike to Ladhak in the night.
"Wacko…do you even know ki ladakh kitna durr hai?" asked Yuvi, not able to believe the nerve of the girl sitting ahead him.
"Haan Yuvi…main tumhaari tarah kam akal nahin hoon….maine saari preparations kar li hai!" They were driving through the main roads now, and he drove a tad bit faster, cutting through the chilly air.
"Tum akeli jaanewaali ho wahaan tak?" he asked.
"Haan…MP is too busy and Vrinda is too scared!"
"Haan…tum jaisi wacko jo uski friend ho….anyone will be scared of you…especially in the dark!" he replied laughing, unable to resist the jibe. Ashi made a face at him which he caught in the rearview mirror and laughed even more at the way she had confirmed his statement.
"Ha ha very funny! Atleast I'm not running away from my dad like a certain 'someone'." Yuvi sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"Accha..toh tum..itni raat main…beech sadak mein, apni bike pe kya kar rahi ho?" he said smirking.
"Oh shut up psycho…and now get down!"
"Thodi aur durr…then I'll get down".
"No no no…get down NOW! Ab yahaan se mujhe turn leke jaana hai," And she made him stop the bike and get down forcibly. "Bye," she said and left without much ado and Yuvi was left standing in the middle of the road staring after her with an unscrutable expression. He watched her reach the signal and then he saw a traffic policeman stopping her. From their expressions and actions, it was clear that ashi was having trouble with her driver's license. A grin snaked across his face as he started to walk towards them.
He walked up to them and showed his special license to the police. The police looked shocked for a moment but then saluted Yuvi and went off to his position, gesturing them to go on their way. Yuvi got on the bike now grinning smugly and then smirked at Ashi.
She kicked at a stone in annoyance and then looked back at him grudgingly. He honked the horn in response indicating her to get on.
"Look Yuvi..now..you're…really…"
"So how many miles to Ladakh?" he asked bluntly. She stared at him for a moment and then got on, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
'I dunno all that. Maths makes me mad. You take care of all that stuff ok?" she said as she got on to the bike behind him.
"Sure..if you want us to land up in Chennai instead of Ladakh!" he joked, grinning as he accelerated the bike into action. They were off. To Ladhak.

It was past midnight now and Yuvi had been driving non-stop for about four hours. His back was stiff, his eyes were stinging, his legs were aching like hell. Ashi had fallen asleep, her head resting on his back and her hands curled round his waist, securely. He was loving it.
Ashi felt the cool blast of the wind slapping her face and she smiled. It was cold but she wasn't feeling it… instead she was feeling deliciously warm. She was on something soft and smooth… and yet strong. She hugged it and snuggled closer. Yuvi felt her hands tighten around him and glanced behind and called out to her gently, "Hey ashi…you awake"
"Yeahh…I guess…" she murmured softly. Yuvi then stopped the bike and made her get down. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and yawned, looking around the deserted road. Yuvi took out the water bottle and gave it to her.
"Drink…and we should get some food, what say?" He said casually glancing at her She did not reply, she was busy drinking and splashing her face with water. His gaze held to her face …she had taken her hair out of its ponytail and was raking her hand through it. The moonlight shone brightly, illuminating her face…the water droplets glistening on her face…her lips all wet and sparkling….and she had no idea how amazing she looked to him at that very moment. Yuvi took a few steps forward as if he was going to scoop her in his arms. But he stopped suddenly and clenched his fists… It wasn't done to think about her… not when they were nothing…they had broken up a long time ago and now they were just friends and he didn't want to crumble their feeble friendship too.
Ashi caught him looking at her…his deep black eyes were lost in some other world altogether...as though lost in some memory….and yet managing to be piercing and sincere. She felt herself blushing, her breathe quicken, her hand immediately going to her jean pocket with which she toyed nervously, trying not to think too much about the way his eyes were fixed on her face. And then he closed his eyes and looked to be counting to ten. She was suddenly aware that he had closed a considerable amount of gap between them. She stepped back from him letting out a breathe.
"Shall we eat then?" she suggested, her voice trying to sound normal.
"Oh yes, ofcourse," he said smiling. She smiled back, trying to make her face go back to its normal colour.
*
"Hey bhaggu!!! Finally!!! We are here!!!" she said her eyes shining with excitement. Yuvi tried not to stare at her too much. As it is, he was having trouble concentrating on the bike, after the incident when he almost kissed her. And now if she was going to look like that the whole time here he wasn't sure he could keep his control…
"Yes Anvesha. Congratulations! You have just stated the obvious!" he said trying to sound petulant and still trying not to stare…
"You know psycho…if we were any place other than here, I would have punched on your nose but here…I'm just too happy to care!" She grinned at the snow…she loved it. It was looking very beautiful…the roads filled with snow that was ankle deep, the house looking white and cozy with the glow of the fireplaces coming through the windows, the white roof tops and the fields white washed with snow… She didn't know where to start looking.
Yuvi went back to the bike and started taking off the bags and stuff when he felt something soft hit him on the head. He turned around, rubbing the back of his head to see Ashi waving at him cheekily and grinning.
"Wacko…you're gonna get it now!!!" he said and dropping what he was doing, he bent down and started cupping a snowball in his hands. By that time she had hit another one at him. He threw his snow ball at her frustrated and was annoyed to find that she quite neatly side stepped it. She was laughing wildly at him enjoying his defeat.
'I swear I would have killed her if she didn't look so damn cute,' he thought not knowing whether he was angry with her or taken in by her.......

The next day they went skiing. Ashi had wanted to go trekking in the snow but Yuvi had flatly refused. The coward, she thought sourly. She would have fought with him till he agreed but she loved to ski too (the fact that she had never ever skied before, was a totally different thing all together) They had rented the skis and were now just sitting in the cable car that would take them to the top.
"So," she said, trying to make conversation as the car neared the top, "have you ever skied?"
"Loads of times…I was the hottest skier the last time we went to Switzerland. The chicks loved me man!" She rolled her eyes at him. Trust Yuvi to bring up girls, or as he said "chicks" in any topic…
"I wonder why they loved a 1 n foot guy on pieces of wood," she mused as the cable car came to a stop and they were getting off. Yuvi turned around, annoyed.
"You just wait…put on your "pieces of wood" and we'll see."
Ashi was having a tough time putting the skis. She looked over at Yuvi, he had already put on his and was just standing up with his sticks held in his hands. She grit her teeth as he smiled mockingly at her noticing her struggling with the skis.
"Well well well…looks as if we have a problem! Wow wacko…and you were challenging me!"
"Main kar lungi…tum jao..apne "chicks" ke peeche! Par yahaan tumhein chicks bhi nahin milengi!" she said while tying the chord round and round her legs. Yuvi meanwhile had left after laughing at her efforts. She stood up with some trouble and tried to walk…it was rather tricky to do that when the skis would sink in the snow and she had to pull out her legs.
"Ok…here goes," she said and pushed her sticks, willing herself forward. She went zooming across the snow, the cold air whipping across her face. She grinned with glee. This was fun. Infact it was more than fun…it was awesome! Just then she spotted Yuvi and she pushed harder, steering herself in his direction. Yuvi turned around and saw her zooming towards him with reckless speed and his eyes widened. He moved aside fast and she zoomed past him, finally crashing into a tree. Alarmed, he sped towards her.
Ashi groaned as she tried to lift herself out of the mess. One minute she was after Yuvi and the next she had gone past him and out of control. Her skis were wighing her legs down and she couldn't bring herself to a sitting position very easily. She groaned as pain shot past her leg when she tried to move it. She finally sat up slowly, wiping her face to get the snow off from it.
"Hey wacko! Took a nice fall, you did!" he said brightly grinning at her with a smile that he knew infuriated her. "Lemme help you up."
"Shut up," she snapped back falling bait to that smile as she always did, "I don't need your help! I'm fine on my own."
"Now don't be stupid and come on..gimme your hand..come on" he said. He sat down next to her and began removing her skis. She reluctantly allowed him to help her knowing she couldn't balance on her leg. He held out a strong arm for her to support herself to stand up. Then he slipped an arm around her waist to help her walk back to the cable car. All that Ashi could remember about that walk through the snow, was Yuvi's arms around her waist…the gentle way he held her…the way he made it seem that it was not a big effort…and yet how much it was affecting her… her heart started to beat faster and she lost control a little, putting wight on her bad leg. A wrong decision, she though painfully, as she was about to sink back into the snow. But he didn't allow that… He gripped her tighter and brought her closer to him… ensuring that she couldn't slip… she had no choice but to wrap her hand around him, her cheeks growing hot as she did it… he must be used to wrapping his arms around girls, she mused as he helped her inside the car. And he must be used to them going all crazy over him…she wondered if, for the few days she was with him, she was also like those girls…as mad and as love struck…she reckoned she must have been. MP would vouch for it.
She sighed and shook her head trying to rid it of all thoughts and especially of Yuvi. She looked back at him and was surprised to see him gazing back at her. There was amusement on his face and something else which she couldn't define. He smiled … but it looked like it was more to himself than her, while still looking at her, as though the way she was behaving was exactly how he thought she would.
"So what wacko? Ab kya tum apne skiing crash pe bhi psychology ki book likhne waali ho?" He was grinning…a spark of mischief in his eyes and… though ashi denied it to herself, looking very cute.
"Psychology?? Naah…" she gestured to him, "who tumhaara kaam hai…akhir pscho kaun hai??" Even though he should be annoyed, he couldn't help laughing because she looked so cute making all those faces at him. She was unaware of the thoughts in his head and he was unaware of the feelings in her heart as they went back to the hotel they were staying in.
Ashi was still lost in her thoughts…looking vague about other things. Yuvi wondered what she was thinking about. She was sitting on the window sill, watching outside, as the snow fell even more heavily; and yet she wasn't actually looking at it. Yuvi could she wasn't…he could tell each of her expressions as he had made it his business to stare at her for so long…he couldn't seem to help it…however much he tried…he was drawn back to her…no matter how many girls he flirted with or dated, it was always back to her…

When Yuvi came back from his bath, it was to find Ashi putting on some kind of cream on her legs. Yuvi went over to her and dabbed some on her face.
"Now you're becoming a perfect lil member of the angels…I bet Tia will be all keen to incorporate you now. You can go and join when we go back, you know." Yuvi finished his little speech to find Ashi staring at him blankly.
Yuvi put on his best Tia voice, "This cucumber face pack is perfect for your face…it'll help you relax and be calm." Ashi burst out laughing.
"Phir iski mujhe nahin tumhein zyaada zaroorat hain, hyper king," she said laughing and put some on his nose.
"Accha? Then I'll have to wear that angels ka halo or something naa"
"No no…tum aise hi theek ho," she said and wiped off the cream from his nose. For a moment Yuvi froze but Ashi was still chuckling away. He raised a hand to the spot where she had touched…it was still burning…
*
That evening, they went in the reception lobby to find that there was going to be a camp fire later that night. Ashi loved campfires but the only one she had been to was the previous year during the holi party when Yuvi had thrown a party during those stupid elections.
They went down to find it all jazzed up, with the music playing in the background. They went to get their food first since they both were very hungry with all the skiing and walking in the snow. They both decided to sit near the fire, as Yuvi needed the warmth of the fire and Ashi could just imagine she was sitting in some jungle with a campfire…
Yuvi spluttered on his drink when Ashi voiced her intentions.
"Only you Ashi…only you," he said shaking his head at her. She huffed impatiently at him.
"Soo….what're we gonna do tomorrow?"
"Umm…sight seeing?" he suggested.
"Sight seeing?! Psycho…sight seeing? Are you serious? Isse boring cheez nahin mili kya?" she asked.
"Well…jahaan tak main jaanta hoon…normal people like to do some sight seeing you know"
"Well no ways…I absolutely refuse to go. Why not go trekking instead?"
"Trekking??? Have you forgotten ki aaj subah hi you almost broke your legs gallivanting on those skis?"
"Oh please…I'm fine. You just don't want to go trekking…you're sucha fattu!"
"Excuse me, mujhe koi dilchaspee nahin hai, rocks pe bakri ki tarah koodna!"
"Well, tum bina koodein hee bakri ki tarah zaroor dikhte ho…maa maa karte rehte ho"
"Hello? What?! Anvesha…we're going on a simple and normal trip tomorrow and that's final I don't even wanna get into those insane, wacked out ideas of yours. If I don't end up in hospital in five days…who mera naseeb samjho,"
"Oh please…pray that I don't fall asleep in your sight seeing ka chakkar…aur mujhe usse bacterial infection nahin ho…aur mujhe wapas doc ke clinic mein naa jaana padein…toh mera naseeb samjho!" she said this all in one breath, glaring at him.
"You know wacko…you're not making any sense…"
"Jaise ki tum bade 'understanding' ke sher ho."
"Hello…main tumse toh better hoon!" They would have continued in this way, had the DJ not started blaring loud music from the speakers. Many people got up and started dancing to the grooving music. Yuvi went to the drinks booth while Ashi went right to the other side; pushing n slapping away people in her way, all the time thinking of new and novel ways to kill…no…absolutely butcher Yuvi.
Yuvi glanced at her… her cheeks all flushed red, she was breathing fast, her eyes were all blazing and she was biting her lip. He closed his eyes and sighed…
Then he opened them, a smirk coming on his face as he started making his way towards Ashi. He reached the spot where she had been earlier but she was nowhere to be seen… Where was she? He looked around in confusion, then he spotted a narrow gate opening up into a path which lead off into the trees. He hurried through the gate and sped off in the direction of the trees, the snow crunching beneath his feet. Then he spotted her, standing amongst the trees, a lone figure of red against the green background.
*
Ashi had closed her eyes…trying to let off the frustration and annoyance and tried to concentrate on how peaceful and cool it was there, with the heavy music sounds fading into a dull thrum. It was very soothing to be here after all the noise of the party and her shouting match…
She felt rather than heard someone behind her….she felt someone's breathe on her neck and she turned around in surprise…to find Yuvi, standing close to her. She groaned at him, "Yuvi…why can't you give me one minute of peace..I'm not even asking for a day I"
"I'm sorry," he said softly. Her eyes widened and she looked up at him.
"What?"
"I said I'm sorry…for shouting at you," Yuvi said looking at her. There was no expression on his face but his eyes were staring penetratingly at her.
"Ohh" she uttered, squirming under his gaze.
"It was a pretty stupid fight too, now that I come to think about it," he said raking a hand through his hair, making him look even cuter.
"Erm…yeah, I was really stupid too," she said watching as his hair flopped back onto his forehead.
"Shall we call it a truce then?" he asked, extending his hand forward. She nodded and shook it. Immediately electricity-like jolts went up her arm. Yuvi didn't release her hand, but rather pulled her closer, gently. His breathe was on her face now and Ashi closed her eyes for the second time that night.
Yuvi felt his constant day dream come nearer. She was so..god-damn near! He just had to lean in a little further…Ashi felt his breathe moving away from her face and felt a whisper in her ear, "So…will you come with me tomorrow…all over the town…?"
"Y-y-yess," she managed to say shakily. He remained breathing in her ear for a moment more before withdrawing away.
It was fifteen seconds later that Ashi realized the full implications of her shaky 'yes'. She looked back at him; he was standing ten paces away. His hair was smoothed back, his stance arrogant and his smirk apparent even from this distance. He was making a "V" sign with his fingers.
"Arrrrrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

'Red was definitely the colour of the season', he thought as he looked out of his room window, 'Even though it's supposed to be white'.
Till now, he had seen a red bird, a copse of cherry trees highlighted in white background and a bunch of people playing in the snow, wearing red jackets. Irritated, he hit his head on the wall three times. Maybe, just maybe, it was not the fault of the bird, the trees or those red jacketed people…maybe it was some weird problem with his own head. But he didn't like to think that way…the thought was too….depressing? exhilarating? Binding? Amazing?
He shook his head, now he was going mad, the same set of questions bouncing on and on in his head.
Whizz
He suddenly looked up, all alert, as he saw something red go past his eyesight, then sighed as he realized it was just a red ball that was being thrown around down in the snow. Then unbidden, came to his mind, the image of a face, standing still, eyes half closed in anticipation, a peaceful look upon it…and those lips…those lips…
Yuvi sighed and opened his eyes, thinking what a fool he had been. 'Pathetic duffer,' he thought. Why hadn't he seized the chance when he had it, bang in front of him and waiting for him too! No…he had to think of mischief (even though most of his mischief, he had learnt from her, in the first place but who was counting that?) he had to think of getting the upper hand…he had to think of games…
Now, his one chance had been stolen from him, by himself and was probably pacing upstairs back and forth, back and forth, thinking of the best way to either push him down the nearest Cliffside or dunk him in the nearest vat of the most vile looking mud.
*
Muddled…..yes…that was the theme of the day…She had never felt such a mixture of emotions as she was feeling now. She was furious…she hadn't been pranked in a long time…her reputation had more than done the trick in scaring people away from even the thought of pranking her…she was embarrassed…how could she have lost control so quickly…just because he had come so close in proximity…she was blushing…he had come too close after all…
She was furious…how dare he play along with her heart…how could he dare? He always had no regard for anyone's feelings, much less hers, he would always behave so arrogantly, with all his pride and his ego and his sick sense of humour…she was…despondent…he must be laughing at her stupidity and how he had fooled her…how he had rendered her speechless and gullible at a slight move from him…
*
He looked without interest at his surroundings. The hotel lounge was the same as ever, full of noise and the thud of bags falling down from the staircases since the bellboy always forgot to avoid the edge jutting out from the wall.
He looked around, the receptionist was now furiously arguing with the bellboy, gesturing at the stairs and at her feet, which is where most bags usually landed. A couple were going out, the woman kissing her husband on the cheek…they went away hand in hand.
A blonde girl was being a bit too cozy on the lounge sofa with her boyfriend…a young boy and his girl were playing a game of first staring at each other and then looking down at the floor, blushing.
He suddenly realized that he was surrounded by couples…in various shapes and forms…and sizes… (if you could weigh the monstrous man eyeing his wife, without breaking the weighing machine i.e.).
He felt more than a pang in his heart when he thought of his own messed up love life…and how it would come back to him always…in some weird form of the colour red…
*
Hunger finally made her come out from her self imposed confinement in her room. She was just rummaging around for food (and throwing away the millions of left over wrappers in the process) when she felt rather than saw someone's gaze on her. She turned around to find him in all his messy-hair-ed glory.
His eyes widened as he took her in…her crumpled, faded purple bathrobe with a drawing of a lion on the front, her scrunched up hair and her bunny slippers with too long teeth.
On someone else it might have looked weird…he would have definitely laughed.
But with her slightly surprised and ruffled up look and the chocolate wrappers in her hand, she looked absolutely cute. He smirked at her.
Which was totally the worst thing to do then as she glared at him and threw all the wrappers at his head. He laughed as he threw his hands over his head.
"It was just a joke!" he said, shouting between the wrappers. Ashi stopped her throwing.
"Ofcourse…it's a joke" and Yuvi was surprised to see her tone, "it's always been a huge joke for you, hasn't it?" she finished bitterly and walked away.
"What do you mean?"
"Yuvraj Dev…. rockstar…heart throb of millions…Casanova…" He just looked at her, stunned.
"Ashi, have you gone nuts? Aisa kuch nahin hai!" he said, bewildered.
"Par tumhein koi hakk nahin banta…meri feelings ko ek game banane ki,." Yuvi went up to her and put his hands on her shoulders and held on as she tried to wriggle away.
"Ashi…aisa kuch nahin hai," he said trying to emphasize each word but failing miserably as he was having a hard time trying to hold on to her. Ashi meanwhile was still muttering curses and things he dared not guess about and was thankful he couldn't hear.
"Ashi!" he finally yelled and swooping down, pressed his mouth to hers. Ashi lost track of time, memory, space and everything else and her world consisted of only one person…
They broke off after a while…gasping…their foreheads still touching.
"Don't you see? It's always been you…always"
