Thousands of couples are taking advantage of a favourable aligning of planets during this weekend to tie the knot. In Mumbai alone, nearly 15,000 couples will be married on December 14 and 16.
NRIs find this especially favourable as they can take advantage of both — the auspicious dates and the Christmas holidays that follow later. "Many NRIs are planning their wedding in the next two weeks so that they can extend their holidays with the Christmas season," says Dhawal Oza, a wedding planner who is organising two weddings over the weekend and a pre-wedding function in Amby Valley near Lonavla.
London-based management consultant, 26-year-old Anand Shah is marrying Mumbai-based Rujuta Shah on Thursday in Bandra. Anand says he chose the date to marry the 27-year-old television actor as it is auspicious. "Also the Christmas holidays are just after the wedding," said Anand.
Sneha Tejwani and Dipa Sheth, who run a firm called Occasionz Unlimited that provides wedding services, say their entire weekend is booked.
"The Indian wedding season is from November to February. However, November was not very auspicious and there are not many auspicious days in January and February. So most weddings are taking place this weekend," explains Tejwani.
"Hindu weddings are dictated by the positioning of planets. If a couple does marry this weekend, the only other option is to tie the knot in January end," says Rachna Lucknowala, whose firm Vivah also provides wedding preparation services.

Decorator Manoj Shah says that on inauspicious days, weddings can be conducted provided they are preceded by poojas to keep away bad luck. "However, December 14 and 16 are so auspicious that you can get married on them blindly. It does not even matter if you are manglik," he said.
Astrologers say that Hindus consider the 'Dhanur' month that starts at the end of December to be a period of prayers. "It is not suited for celebrations. The sun will enter Sagittarius later this month and the nuptials will have to be completed before this," said Navi Mumbai-based astrologer K G Krishnan.
Even in Delhi, around 36,000 couples are expected to marry on Saturday and Sunday.
