DHAVAL ROY
In an age of the typical sari-clad, heavy-duty dialogue-mouthing tele mothers like Tulsi and Parvati, Soniya Ray, who essays the role of the sassy and glamourous mother on Star One's Remix comes across as a breath of fresh air. The talented actor Soniya Kapoor, who plays the part says, "I think Soniya Ray is 85 per cent like Soniya Kapoor. So, whenever I visit the sets of Remix, I don't have to act. I just have to be myself." However, playing the character of a mother of an 18-yearold girl is no mean feat for Soniya, who is relatively young herself. Did she have any reservations about doing this role? "Soniya is supposed to have been married at 16 and become a mother at 17. So, I play a 34-yearold woman and not a 50-year-old mother, like most actors on TV today. Initially, I was apprehensive about playing a mother, but the producers convinced me that it's a very strong role, and I am glad I decided against rejecting it," she says. Talking of rejection, Soniya candidly admits that she was rejected for the job of an airhostess, after which she worked as a secretary in a company. "I started my career in show-biz as a model on the ramp. That's when producer Bubby Kent spotted me and asked me to audition for his serial Unchey Log," she reminisces. Later, she acted in Devta with Shekhar Suman, but both the serials went off-air a little later. However, what changed Soniya's career was Ravi Chopra's Aurat, followed by Zanjeerein, in which she played the main lead. Since then, Soniya's career graph has been zooming. But, what has been her reason for opting out of a big role - that of Mohini in Star Plus' Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? "As I was committed to Remix it was difficult for me accept dates for Kyunki. But, I don't regret not taking up that role because Soniya Ray's part is also very interesting," she adds.
Films aren't a distant dream for Soniya either. She has already been seen in a small role in the Shilpa Shetty starrer Fareb. "Unfortunately, the film didn't do well at the box office, so I didn't get too many accolades," she opines.
As of now, she doesn't have any films and is not rushing into Bollywood either. "I wouldn't mind just three scenes in a film, if the role is good and I feel I will get noticed," she says. But the same logic doesn't apply for TV. "Here, if you are out of sight on television, you are also out of mind," she reasons. Soniya has not been out of sight and certainly not out of her viewers' minds, as she continues to make waves as a glamourous, fun-loving mom.
