He had said he wanted to return to Mumbai by the end of the year. The onus was on her to share the facts with Sabina. About the marriage, her husband and separation.
She had no idea how she was going to do it
"Weve been apart too long Khanak! Its time to straighten things out" he said. She stood in the balcony looking at the Sat afternoon traffic below
Being close to Diwali and it being the beginning of winter the otherwise stiff and haunted Vasant Vihar looked dressed up and lively
"You do want to return, dont you?" he asked
"I am afraid for us" she had said
"Some fears are good! They will always keep us together"
"I am constantly competing with your work"
"That is not true"
"Aap is project ke baad ek aur mein busy ho jaayenge. One crisis at work was all it took to break us up" she muttered choking
"You could have gone with me to the States"
"Thats not the point"
"And no! I did not want to" she responds furiously
Pause...
"Will you acknowledge I came to Delhi for you?"
"I didnt at first"
"There is something about the two of us Khanak! We compulsively seek each other"
They stood in the balcony adjacent to his room around Noonish with their tea and coffee,...
She stares into her cup, a swirl of steam dances up, and mixes into the cool November air, losing itself...
"We shocked everybody with our separation" she says
"Dadi and Dad kind of suspected, they know us too well"
"This is a big thing" (the reconciliation)
"We are never going to agree 100% with each other Khanak"
" We dont even agree 10%"
"But yet crave for each other"
"Every time you get on a plane I am terrified... if I am at work... I drown myself in my Stru Cal or CAD but when I am home at nite... it terrifies me"
"Its the safest mode of transport" (reassuringly)

She is not dressed to meet company, she looks at him

She walks to her room thru the connecting door between the two bedrooms, showers and when she steps out the tech guy is gone. Her PC is sitting on the desk by the couch...
He is in the balcony on the phone
He hangs up, comes in, sees her wearing her mangal sootra
Walks up to her
She is wearing a peach churidar and a green kurta with cap sleeves
The peach dupatta has some type of sequin work on it, its covering the black beads... she has left her peach bangles on from last nite...
" You kept them on?" he asks noting the color of her churidar and bangles
"I did!" she says fingering her mangal sootra
"I have to meet Saurabh at 3! I will be back soon"
"Hmmm"
"Do you want to go shop for Diwali"
She looks up at him startled
"Aapke saath?"
"Yep!"
Pause
"Take Jamuna with you if you like" he chuckles
She shakes her head
"Didnt you say there was a family tradition, your Aada took you all?
"Jee"
"I will see you at 6?"
She cant believe things have begun to work out or so it looks like
"Can I go without you?" (teases) (if you dont return by 6?)
"You cant go without me!"
