Madz: Did you get all your papers together?
Shaan (gulping his coffee) I think so!
He is wearing black trousers with almost invisible silver stripes and a crisp white work shirt, three quarters of the sleeve open. She wore an elegant tan A-line skirt with a slit at the back and a pink /almost white blouse with puffed sleeves. Dadi had strictly told her not to wear white or black.
She had taken off her two dozen chooda from both hands and wore four each, and hooked the mangal sootra pendat on to a gold chain.
Her hair was tied in a professional pony tail high on the head, with wisps escaping behind her ears. She as usual only wore kohl on her eyes. The sindoor filling her parting half gone, she had not even touched it since he had filled it, just looked at it, admired it smiled, but not messed with it.
The past couple days she didn't want to look at it even.
She sat quietly across from him, Sunil and Akshay were up reading sections of the Mint. Dadi was doing pooja.
Hari lal brought out a plate of steaming omelette
Madhavi: Beta tum egggs to khaana shuru karo (kind)
Khanak: nahi Mom! (nervous)
Sunil: let her be Madhavi! Don't worry beta
Khanak: Its OK Dad Mom wants me to be well fed
Madhavi: I don't think he will make poha everyday, we'll have to think of something. Yaha to sab eggs khaate hain, may be paranthas?

Shaan looks up at his wife the first time this morning, she is playing with her toast''.. fighting the butter demons with it'. One shove is too harsh the fork flies from her plate.

Khanak: Its so much more comfortable
Her husband watches her pick up the fork and set it aside

Akshay: isko hamare investment elections par bharosa nahi hai, if he doesn't believe in our opinion he has to take his own. Money sitting around does not earn anything for any body

Shaan: You have a go at it!
Khanak drinks her chai and does not eat her toast or the muffins in the bowl.
Madhavi: Dekho isko, she is either missing her parents or sick or upset

MadhavI: Shaan, how long were you guys playing with the kids?
Shaan knows she did not play, she had taken off at 9 and only showed up when the girls were watching a movie at 11. Akash and Prad were in the rec room and Akhil was playing Xbox in his room
He had gone to see Samar before he was to take off to Kathmandu for the trek. When he had gone to the rec room to pick up his ipod, he had noticed the 4 of them watching a Billy Crystal movie. Their eyes had met across the dark quiet room shorn of anger and arrogance.
Ray had broken the trance by asking him if he was joining them
He shook his head and walked away without giving her a second look.
Ujju had talked her into sleeping in their room.
He had returned to an empty bedroom. He had walked over to her closet, not a thing was unpacked.
Sunil: do you want to take Dharam or Pradeep?
Shaan: Doesn't matter, downing his second cup.
She is readying to get up
Sunil: Dadi se ashirwad liya? Beta?
Khanak: Abhi main mandir ja rahi hoon (walking towards the pooja room)
Sunil: Shaan jao beta, tum bhi jao!
Shaan, not particularly religious, drags his feet
Sunil: Cmon you can do it one day in a year (she can hear father and son argue as she walks away)
Shaan is up
Sunil: Wash your hands first, you ate eggs
Shaan: With a fork!
Sunil: Thx for letting me know you know how to use silverware
Shaan laughs
He follows his wife
Dadi is almost done is overjoyed to see her fave bahu
Dadi: You look gorgeous. You look like a 12 year old
Khanak blushes
Dadi: U do! Something about those puffed sleeves
She looks at her DIL's hands "Achha kiya you took off most of the bangles, it would look too tacky, I ve seen too many newly weds there with three dozen of them and wearing shiny silk, you don't have to advertize your marital status"
Khanak smiles fondly at Dadi's progressive thoughts
Khanak: Lekin main lautkar pehan loongi haan Dadi!
DadI: Zaroor beta wear them as long as you like! (indulgently)
Shaan is leaning on the door jamb texting
Dadi: I don't think God would mind if you walked up here!
Shaan grins and walks up to her
Dadi: Phone do Khanak ko
Shaan: Jee?
Dadi: hand it to her, for five minutes will you?
He holds it on the edge, she grabs the other edge. Dadi notices how they don't make any attempts to even touch, when most newly weds would use this opp to caress each other
Khanak holds it like a bilogical specimen
Dadi brings out the tray, and does arti to both, asks them to pray
She does with eyes closed hands joined, he does with eyes open
Dadi holds the tray for him and urges him to dab some teeka on her
Khanak freezes in shock, turns to face him
He bends down on the tray, and dips his second finger carefully into the tiny cup and coats it with sindoor, unsmiling, serious, reaches for her parting and smears it all off.
Dadi smiles "Oh! Good1 I was about to tell you not to put it on her forehead as she is headed for her interview, you made a good call"
Shaan does not say a word, she quickly turns towards the shrine, smiles at Dadi
Dadi applies teeka to him, they both pay obeisance, and get up
Dadi give sthem both prashad, she eats all of hers up he chews slowly.
Khanak: Main apna purse lekar aati hoon (to dadi)
Leaves the room
Enters the walk in closet and grabs her purse, walks down thinking about the signature she did last nite on the form. All she could bring herself to come up with was a "Khanak " not Khanak Gujral" or anythhing.
Yogesh had insisted that it had to be a full name, she had added a G as an afterthought.
Her husband waited by the door.
Sunil, Madz and Akshay wished them luck Nandu maasi and Chachi and all were asleep.
The couple walk out together, he holds the door open while she steps out
Dadi is looking at them with a part sad part doting expression.

Shaan: Lets go! (to his wife, to the driver, to who ever will pay him any attention)

Pradeep: main to Ludhiane ka hoon (sheepish)
Khanak seats herself, he sits from the other side.
They both allow atleast one foot in between
