The day after his marriage to his childhood love, Khanak; Suraj goes to the factory to fix up a machine for the inauguration. Shantanu's recklessness causes Suraj to get electrocuted and seriously injured. Suraj dies in pain, leaving behind a shocked Shantanu and a grieving Khanak.
Shantanu's father offers a huge compensation to the bereaved family, and Suraj's brother Mangal, blinded by greed, accepts this offer. Khanak, however, refuses the compensation and demands justice instead. At the Panchayat meeting, Shantanu shocks everyone by saying that Khanak should take the compensation offered and move on with her life. The appalled sarpanch announces the judgment – since Shantanu has destroyed Khanak's life, he would find a groom for her.
As a solution and atonement – Shantanu get on to search for the perfect groom and meets with a number of hurdles. He comes to face with the stigma attached to being a widow. Finally, he succeeds in luring a man working in a grocery store called Mulji with a fat sum of Rs. 20 lakhs. Khanak voices her resentment and refuses to re-marry. She says that she doesn't want anything but justice. However, Suraj's family and the Panchayat approve of the groom that Shantanu has found for Khanak and marriage preparations begin.
But Natasha's father Mr Agarwal who was not in favour with her relation with Shantanu plans to trap him in the village and bribes mulji the groom Shantanu brought for Khanak. Mulji runs away with the money and to save his life from the furious villagers, Shantanu marries Khanak. Khanak even agreed to the marriage knowing that she is a burden for her husband's family. She moves to Shantanus house where Natashas father blackmails her.
At first Shantanu really hates Khanak because of a series of events (Khanak accidentally washed his laptop with water, Natasha got jealous of Khanak as everyone was praising her and Shaan's relationship, etc) but one night it all changes. Shantanu wants to make it up to Natasha after they have a fight and writes her a note telling her to meet him in the drawing room at night,(while everyone else is at the farmhouse). But the servant who was to deliver the note to Natasha, accidentally gave it to Khanak.
When Khanak reached the decorated room with candles and flowers, she was confused and extremely shocked when Shantanu hugged her from the back. When Shantanu realized it was Khanak, not Natasha, they both started to laugh. Though Khanak wanted to leave, Shantanu asked her to stay and keep him company. They started to talk about Natasha, about the family, thier behavior towards Khanak, and abut Suraj (at which point Khanak started to cry) and then Shantanu made several attempts to make her laugh. They all failed but eventually Khanak was smiling again.
Then Shantanu started to drink wine and since he was not in his senses he got intimate with Khanak thinking it was Natasha. Then Shantanu started to look really drowsy so Khanak brought him upto his room, and then left to go to her room. In the morining they were both embarrassed of what happened and didn't know how to face one another. When Natasha found out that Shantanu had spent all night with Khanak alone in the house and he had kept it a secret from her, she suspected they slept together and she left the house. Thinking that she had created a rift between Natasha's and Shantanu's relationship, Khanak leaves the house.
Shantanu goes out in search of Khanak, and he finds her that very night and from here starts a roller coaster of hilarious events that happen while they are trying to get home. Khanak refuses to go anywhere but Dhulwari, (her hometown) and definitely not Mumbai. It starts to rain and while Khanak is dancing in the rain, Shantanu starts to dream about him and Khanak dancing together in the rain and having romantic scenes in a cabin. He shakes it all off saying hes getting too filmy. They find an old cabin to stay in for the night and fall asleep.
During this time Natasha returns home, hoping to see Shantanu. But Akshay (Shans older brother) tells her that Shantanu has gone looking for Khanak and that they are both missing for two days. She is furious that after everything that happened Shantanu went to look for Khanak and not her. Khanak's relatives arrive to meet her but see that Khanak is not there and ask for an explanation form her in-laws.
In the morning Khanak makes Shantanu a deal, if he can earn enough money (by himself and without his dads help) and buy tickets for them to go to Mumbai, then she will willingly go with him. So Shantanu finds a dhaba to work in. At first its very hard from him to do all the tasks without getting mad at the customers but when he thinks about Khanak it calms him down and he gets back to work.
The dhaba owner and his wife help Shantanu and Khanak (separately) realize that they love each other and the feeling starts to settle in for both of them. At the end of the day Shantanu has earned enough money and Khanak honors her promise by going with him cheerfully.
When the two come home, Natasha and Shaan both try to contact each other, but are unsuccessful in doing so, which creates a rift between them. Their problems are increased when Shaan refuses to tell Khanak's relatives about their real relationship, and wants to keep up a pretence of being husband and wife. Khanak's (ex) sister-in-law - Hetal - is extremely nosey, and likes to butt into Shaan and Khanaks lives as much as she can. Shaan and Khanak decide to move into the same room - Shaan's room - so that Khanak's relatives don't get suspicious. There's a routine every morning, as Shaan sleeps on the sofa and Khanak on the bed, all the duvets and pillows Shaan uses are scattered onto the bed, so that when Hetal walks in, it looks like Shan and Khanak sleep in the same bed. It goes well, until Natasha walks in with Hetal one morning. She confronts Shaan and they have an argument that does not really end. Khanak tries to convince Shaan to apologize to Natasha, he tries, in his own way. He goes into her office and asks her to be 'just friends' - for the next four months, anyway. Natasha is shocked and upset, and her dad tries to convince her to move on, but she does not agree.
Several moments between Shaan and Khanak show their growing love for each other, once they get tangled in the duvet together, they fall into the pool together, and Khanak always falls on Shaan every other day.
Shaan tries to teach Khanak English, because she wants to learn it, after a row with Khushboo (Shaan's Bhabi and Natasha's sister) about food. While doing this, they get into a situation in which Shaan is carrying Khanak - Bollywood style - in a room, when Natasha walks in (with Hetal in the background). This leads to more upset, more anger, however, Shaan is starting to realise, more and more, that he loves Khanak, not Natasha - as he says 'I love you Khanak'... to Natasha. This small statement makes Natasha angry and upset, even more so, which Shaan sees as justifiable, but she gives him no chance to explain and tells, as she is leaving the house, that he can only talk to her again when he has the answer to why he said Khanak's name instead of her own, and if she (Natasha) is his life, anymore.
Shaan goes back inside, while Khanak is in their room thinking about how Natasha must have felt and wondering how Shaan could have made such a mistake. Shaan enters the room and sees Khanak, he wonders what she must be thinking about him, and also thinking about how he said Khanak's name, he wonders whether it is because he is around her so much, then he thinks, why is he around her so much...? Then Shantanu discovers that he does not love Natasha, he loves Khanak. He tried every possible mean to make her happy. Later Khanak also starts falling for Shantanu.
Mean while natasha really tries hard to understand her relationship with Shantanu, she starts thinking that Shantanu do not love her anymore and have started fallen for Khanak. This was actually true.
After all these, Shantanu writes a letter to Khanak telling her that he loves her. But that letter somehow does not reach Khanak. Khanak still thinking that Shantanu loves natasha; feels that she is responsible for the misunderstanding between natasha and Shantanu. Khanak plans an idea and ask Shantanu to come and meet her in some lonely place. When Shaan comes to see her, all he sees is a girls shadow. Being overwhelmed with his feelings for Khanak, he thinks that it is Khanak. He reveals his feelings for her and says, " I LOVE U and I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT" but he didn't recall her name. Shantanu proposes by giving the ring to the girl. Slowly the shadow moves towards him and Shantanu comes to know that the girl is not Khanak but Natasha! When Shantanu comes to know about this he thinks that Khanak still loves Suraj and not him.
Shaan gets angry and upset with all that has happened and decides to ask Khanak if she right about all that happened(he always felt that Khanak was aware of his feelings for her). But Khanak mistakes Shan for doing all this on purpose tells Shan that their marriage was never meant to be. This irritates Shan and he asks her to take her things and leave the room. An upset Khanak leaves the room only to hear her mother in law discussing with Khushoo about how she found Shaan's letter to Khanak revealing his feelings and how she switched it by giving it to Natasha and putting another one instead for Khanak to read.
Shan's father understands that something is wrong and realises that both of them love each other but are unable to confess it to each other. So he makes a plan and sends them both for the final agreement of the project (which Shaan had undertaken independently before proposing to Natasha. He had told the investors that he would be involving his wife Khanak as she was the inspiration behind the textile project) along with his trusted driver Dharam. He instructs Dharam to arrange situations where both of them can spend time together and confess their feelings to each other. Shans father decides to keep it a secret from shaan's mom and Khushboo as he knew that they would try ruin the whole plan. Shan is unaware of his fathers motive and sets off with Khanak. Dharam does as he is told and shan realises that he is falling for her more n more ...
Khanak realises that she too likes Shan and decides to win him back. After a cute little fight between both of them shaan goes to the bathroom and by mistake opens the shower. Shaan gets irritated with what happened and starts shouting. Hearing this, Khanak comes and slips falling into Shantanu's arms. The scene gets romantic as both of them feels the love in the air and gets close but still does not confess to each other. Khanak tries everything to win back Shan's love including wearing his shirt and jeans. Though he pretends to be unaffected he begins to wonder about the change in her and deep down likes what Khanak does to cheer him up. On seeing Khanak in jeans and shirt shaan feels really surprised and happy because she was looking prettier then ever. He starts making fun of Khanak and tells her that she is not looking good but Khanak replies by saying that it is because she is wearing Shantanu's shirt. Shan decides to tease her and asks her to give his shirt back. Khanak naughtily refuses and Shantanu romances with Khanak and just when they were getting close they get disurbed by a knock ...
The manger had come to tell them that the room they asked for is ready and that they could shift from there. Meanwhile Khushboo and Mrs. Khandelwal reach the hotel and starts looking for the duo. Both Khanak and Shantanu feel really happy on being together again and they decide to watch TV and talk. Khanak dreams of getting close with Shantanu but when she comes to her senses she sees Shan fast asleep on the cot instead of the sofa. Next day, Khanak wakes up to find Shans note saying that he ahd to urgently leave to meet with the investors but he requests her to have breakfast together. Khanak hears a knock on the door and she is surprised to find Mrs. Khandelwal and Khushboo. They tell her that she will not be able to win back Shan and will try to foil everything that she does. But Khanak remains firm and replies back by asking them what justification would they give to Shan when he sees them in their room? This furiates them both and they leave. Both of them search the entire hotel for Shan but with no luck. So they wait outside Khanaks room and takes turns to watch for Shans return. But Shan calls Khanak and tells her to get ready and reach the hotel ballroom for a reception arranged for them by the investors. In a series of incidents Mrs. K and Khushboo leaves the place to search for Shan one last time. In just a while, Shan reaches the room to get Khanak. On enquiry, Khanak finds that Shan is unaware that his mom and bhabhi is in the hotel. She feels relieved to see Shan and asks him to swear by her that he will not leave for the party till she comes. Shan is quite surprised and agrees. Again when they are about to leave, she spots both of them outside and she convinces Shan that they should leave through the window so that their project will be a success. Reluctantly, he agrees, and they reach the party. They are surprised to find Mr. Khandelwal and Akshay in the party both of whom are really happy to see Shan back with Khanak who has transformed him. They tell them that they have come to give them moral support and Mr. Khandelwal requests Shantanu to address the people attended at the party, Shantanu calls Khanak on the stage and ask her to give the speech, at first Khanak is nervous but later starts her speech in English, Shantanu is happy then Mrs. Khandelwal and Kushboo come there and are shocked to see Shantanu and Khanak hugging each other, they all leave for their house, Khanak decides to confess her love for Shantanu, Mr. agarwal decides to make Khanak leave the khandelwal house, Mangal with the help of Kushboo decides to kidnap Khanak, Khanak comes to know of this and escapes from him and returns house kushboo is shcocked to see her and her about the kidnapper Khanak says that he already knows of their plan and tells that the kidnapper is still waiting for her in the office, kichidi movie team visits Khandelwals house to promote their film, Shantanu indirectly asks Khanak to stay with him in his room, Khanak is not able to decide about it, then Shantanu tells her to off the lights before she leaves the room, meanwhile Mr. Agarwal comes to Mr. Khandelwal's house and asks Mr. Khandelwal why Khanak is still staying in their house when Shantanu is going to marry Natasha, he is emotional and gets heart attack, Khanak see Mr. Agarwal, Mr. Agarwal asks Shantanu to fulfill his last wish by marring Natasha immediately, when Shantanu wants to tell him something Kushboo and Mrs. khandelwal stops him, Mrs. Khandelwal asks Khanak to help her in the Shantanu's marriages and Shantanu can't say anything and leaves room, now Khanak is ready to leave the house
Khanak is totally upset and decides to accept it as her fate that her marriage to Shantanu was never meant to be. Shaan's mother and Khushboo behave rudely to her and asks her to leave the house accepting defeat. But she tells them back that she is unable to believe that Shantanu was so unfortunate to have a mother who loves her victory rather than her sons life. Meanwhile Shan is quite confused by all the events and Khanaks friendship towards him. Thinking about her, he realises that their relation had grown more than that of friendship. He decides to confess his feelings if Khanak gives him some sign. But Khanak leaves the house without speaking to Shan. As she is about to leave, she runs into Natasha who notices her upset face and asks Khanak to rethink her decision. Khanak remains firm in her decision to leave but also tells Natasha that the Shan she is leaving behind is a very transformed person than what he was known to Natasha. Natasha reaches Shaans Paathshala and Shan who is expecting Khanak asks Natasha to confess her feelings without seeing who was actually standing there. Natasha tells him that Khanak has left and she confronts Shan as to why he did not stop Khanak when he questions why Khanak had not bothered to speak to him before leaving. Shan's reply finally comes down on Natasha that he has fallen in love with Khanak. He did not want to hurt Natasha and that was the reason that he still wanted to continue the marriage. But knowing Shan, Natasha fights within herself and tells him that he cannot marry her and love Khanak. She tells him that she is still first in their friendship and convinces him to go and stop Khanak before he loses her again.
Shan is at loss of words for his understanding friend and leaves behind a happy and sad Natasha. He stops the auto that Khanak is travelling and lifts her and puts her in his jeep. On being asked where he was taking her, he replies that being her husband, she is going to her inlaws house and where her 2 month contract will not end. He also tells her about Natasha and also reveals his feelings for Khanak. Khanak is happy and then cute fights between the two follow all the way home. At home, Mr. Khandelwal and Shan Dadi are happy for the two but Mrs. Khandelwal remains totally angry and sits in her room. Shan consoles his mother and reminds her of his schooldays where she used to tell him that he would have to meet new people and that it would take time to adjust to the environments. He tells her to give Khanak a chance and convinces her that he is sure that Khanak would win her heart too and would be a very good daughter in law. Mrs Khandelwal tells him that she will try to but after Shan leaves she decides to start making plans to make Khanaks life miserable. Mr. Khandelwal and Dadima give their blessings on Khanak and asks advises her to always stand up to life's challenges and not to run away from them.
