Part 4: Yellow

A- Letters

Dadi:

Khanak has always been that way; she never shared what she felt easily. Even on her probing Khanak many a times just changed the subject so cunning and brilliantly that one forgot what one was talking about with her in the first place.

She truly believed that Khanak had fallen in love with Shan at last. Her eyes and experience was not lying. She had noticed the way Khanak talked about him, to him and stared at him too, when she thought no one was noticing.

She was the reason that Shan, had changed for the better, from just a spoilt, rich, aimless brat, he had made something of himself proving his father, brother and her wrong, as well as the Business associates and community. He had made them all proud.

She could hear how Madhvi was taking credit and as well as her son, but none spoke that one truth, they all knew, the real reason Shan had changed, the one person who truly deserved all the praise and adulation, Khanak, his wife; who truly brought about the changes in him. Who challenged him to do better, who motivated him and who believed in him and his abilities, his intelligence and good heart, when no one did.

Shan her darling grandson, what had he done and why. Why, oh why had he done what he had? She thought she saw love and admiration in his eyes for Khanak, whenever she caught him staring at her. The way, he defended her, against his own mother and bhabi. Even against her, own family members. It had to be love. She was not a crazy old lady who was losing her mind or seeing things that were not there. In her age she noticed more than others.

She so wanted to talk to Shan and ask him why he did what he did. Did he not love Khanak or did he still love Natasha all this time. She also wanted to ask that if it was so, why he didn't tell Khanak himself and leave it to his parents.

It was not possible right now as she inquired from Hiralal who said Shan sir was asleep. The talk could wait till morning. She needed to have her questions answered for her own sanity than anything else.

She shook her head thinking about Mr.Aggarwal, who a few months back was hell bent against Shan from becoming his son-in-law; but now that Shan had changed and become famous and a force to reckon with in the business world, he was ready to accept him as his future son-in-law: Chameleon.

She picked up the letter and read it again.

Dearest Dadi,

You are truly very dear to me and closest to my heart. You will always be there, in my heart, and prays. You were the only one who accepted me from day one and tried to make it easier for me to fit in and always encouraged me. If not for you I wouldn't have learned English. If it wasn't for you I would never have had the chance to entertain and feed Hiten Kumar. If it wasn't for you, I would have died from the inside long time back. You truly gave me strength and the courage to carry on, along with your favourite grandson.

Please, please forgive me for leaving in such a way, without telling you. I just couldn't and I think, no I know for sure that you will understand why. We all knew that I was just a guest in the house for six months till the divorce got finalized, and so the day came and it was done. I truly never ever had a right on anyone of you, but your kindness towards me always humbled me, your acceptance of me in the family as one of you, always warmed my heart, for all that and more I will always be thankful till eternity.

Please forgive me for any wrong that I may have done you unknowingly. Please forgive me for the hurt I have caused you with my leaving. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me and my action.

Bless Natasha ji and Shantanu's marriage as you did ours, even though you knew it was for a few months.

I don't know if we will ever meet again.

P.S. Please do not be harsh on Shantanu. He is not the reason for my leaving'.its'..nothing.

Again she left what she wanted to say incomplete.

What worried her most was that she did not tell anyone, not even her nor her own parents of her whereabouts. The only person she informed about leaving the home was Sunil, stating the reason that she would not like to be in the way of the wedding preparations and cause awkwardness for Natasha, her family and the guest, with staying back for the wedding and thus would like to go back home to Dhulwadi.

She had on learning about her leaving the house from Sunil had immediately called Chwoksi to enquire if she had landed there safe and sound, and what she found out was not she was expecting. She was not where she was supposed to be and on talking to her parents she found out that even her parents did not know about her where about, only knew that she was safe and okay.

She did not share this information with anyone, what they would do even if she did tell them. They all were busy with preparations for Shan's marriage.

Even her talk with Sunil bore no fruit. Sunil was, "Maa, we always knew he loved Natasha and his marriage with Khanak was for six months only. I am just concerned with my son's happiness, and if his happiness is with Natasha then, that's what I will support. I can't force him to stay in a marriage he himself never wanted or accepted. He told us all quiet clearly, in the beginning itself, that Khanak was to stay with him, in this house as his friend till the six month period was completed, and then they both would live their own life, and that's what happened. He chose Natasha over Khanak".

Shantanu Khandelwal's Bedroom:

"Khanak, Khanak, come back here" he yelled as he ran behind her. He stopped and bent down leaning on his knees, breathing heavily tired of running behind her through the fields planted with fully grown God only knows which plant, and the sun was bearing down on them, and both the plant and the sun were obstructing his view of her an making catching her impossible.

He heard her laughter and moved in that direction.

He heard her call out in her naughty voice filled with laughter "No you can't catch me".

"Oh yes I will, you wait and watch" he answered back and started running again after her, as he caught a glimpse of her white saree, her smiling, laughing face, twinkling eyes and hair long silky hair flying behind her.

He was so close, so very close, he reached out and grabbed her, turned her around, but she suddenly disappeared right in front of him.

Shantanu work up with a start, spreading his arms around to grab Khanak to him, but his hands encountered a pillow and nothing else. This woke him up from his sleep immediately. He looked around and noticed that Khanak was not there on the bed with him where she belonged, he got up and walked to the washroom thinking she was there but found it empty.

Why did this feel like Deja vu, that he was already done this and the outcome was not to his liking!

He shook his head to get rid of the cobwebs from his brain and sleep from his system, when suddenly his eyes fell on the letter on the bed lying right next to him, and all that had happened from the time of his arrival home flashed right in front of him.

No he screamed in his mind, she just can't have left him after what had passed between them. Not after she declared her love for him, by words as well as action.

The only question that kept running in his mind was what had passed from the time she left for the mandir to his leaving for Singapore, which made her just get up and leave, without even talking to him. He really did not understand what he had done or said or not said that made her leave him.

He kept playing all that had passed in the whole day, in his mind, but it came up blank. Suddenly he remembered that Hiralal had given him a letter from her and another big envelope too.

He tore open the envelope with the letter and began to read:

Shantanu,

Forgive me for all the upheaval I have caused in your life. I really didn't mean to as you well know.

Hope you and Natasha ji have a wonderfully blissful married life. Wishing both of you happiness always.

He read it and reread it again and again not understanding or believing what she wrote.He kept turning the letter over and over thinking that he missed something, but there was nothing. No clue , no more words explaining to him what she meant with her cryptic words happiness with Natasha, sorry for the night, etc

Why is she wishing me happiness with Natasha and what marriage, and what was she sorry about, there was nothing to be sorry about that night, that night was a dream come true, a gift from God he hadn't even asked for, the night she declared her love to him for him. Was she sorry about that'.he shook his head in a negative gesture, no it's not that, it has to be something else, but what.

The letter jut left him more confused, frustrated and angry'as his mind just couldn't grasp all that she wrote. There was no declaration of her love for him, there was not even a Dear, or a I will miss you or see you soon or anything personal.

He moved his hair away from his face and grabbed his head and supported its weight by leaning his arms on his knees.

He kept shaking his head, hoping for a miracle, in understanding the letter and it meaning, when suddenly his eyes fell on the other big envelope that Harilal had said was for him. He picked it up and tore it open and emptied the contents of it on his bed.

It was the file which held the divorce papers that Akshay bhai and Chwoksi had gotten signed by Khanak, but which he had never gotten around to sign, and about whose existence he had completely forgotten. He remembered that this file was with their lawyer. He picked it up and opened it and stared at what he saw in disbelief. What he say was impossible, how?? How the hell did the papers bear his signature?. He kept staring at his signature as it would give him an answer, all the while pondering about its appearance on those papers.

It has to be a forgery, he thought, but no, have can it, there were his, but he never signed these papers, so how come his signature were on it. Then his eyes fell on another sheet of paper lying on the bed. He picked it up and read.

Mr. Shantanu Sunil Khandelwal,

It's a pleasure to inform you, that your request for a divorce from your wife, Mrs. Shantanu Khandelwal, that wa request by you, sic months back, was granted by the Court today.

As of today, you are no more husband and wife and she has no more rights to lay claims on your person, your name or your property.

Congratulations sir.

What the F%@$!!!!! Bloody Hell !!!!! He shouted out loud and with the paper clutched in his hand he banged open his bedroom door and started screaming at the top of his voice "Mom, Dad, Bhaiya!!!!" at three o'clock in the morning, waking up all the residents of the Khandelwal house from their peaceful slumber.

Guys I tried to make it as close to the characters and their reactions as possible..I don't know if I succeeded...in bringing out the characters emotions , thoughts, feelings out to you all readers , I wrote, re worote this part so many times..adn I sill felt...I haven't done perfect justice to it...If you find it lacking please forgive me.
