'I so want to be like Madhuri Dixit' - Yashashree Masurkar

09 April 2010 | 6:23pm 25 Comments

On a tete-e-tete with Yashashree Masurkar who makes her hindi debut as Kanak on Star One's Rang Badalti Odhani...

Yashashree Masurkar is no stranger to the Marathi audience as she became a hit with her debut show Laxman Resha in Zee Marathi">Zee Marathi. She makes a crossover to mainstream Hindi small screen with Star One's Rang Badalti Odhani produced by Beyond Dreams Pvt Ltd and Anahita Productions.

The chirpy actress exudes energy as she shares her journey from school to small screen?

What kind of a character do you play?
I play a seedhi saadhi hasti khelti ladki (straight simple laughin' playin' girl).

How did you bag this role?
The producers of the show saw me on Laxman Resha that airs on Zee Marathi">Zee Marathi and gave me a call asking me to appear for the auditions.

So far, how is your shooting experience?
It's been very nice. I'm very happy.

Do you relate to the character?
I partially do because I'm very bubbly and always like to be active. But Kanak is born and brought up in rural Rajasthan whereas I'm mostly brought up in Mumbai. Kanak doesn't know English but she's smart in her own way and learns from her environment.

It seems you play a sort of rebel?
Well, you know, I get married to my childhood sweetheart Suraj (Harpreet Singh). And I lose him because of something that Shantanu (Karan Tacker) does. So I take revenge? and if that makes me a rebel?then I guess, yes, you are right.

How did acting happen to you?
When I was in eighth standard I was offered to play the role of a mad girl in school theatre. I sportily took it up. It gave me an impetus to take more of drama in school. Then I participated in a fashion show organized by Maharashtra Times and won the title of Shravan Queen. This brought me into the spotlight and I landed the role in Zee Marathi">Zee Marathi's Laxman Resha and now Rang Badalti Odhani.

Don't you feel you got it all easy?without the much struggle?
Yes, but I had to struggle in?umm?other fields of life.

Is Kanak difficult to portray?
She is not much difficult to portray. All that she was, was fun. To be very frank I didn't have to go through so much research etc. Just had to learn the twang of the dialect.

Who is your inspiration?
Madhuri Dixit! I so want to be like her, but I can't dance like her?unfortunately (laughs).

Do you like wearing heavy jewelry like Kanak?
To be honest, I don't wear even a speck of jewelry when I'm at home. On any ordinary day you'll find me in a simple pair of jeans and tee with my hair all whacky (laughs).

Are you parents happy with your entry to the glamour field at such a young age?
Yes, they are very supportive and are happy for me.

How are handling the work pressure of a daily soap?
When you do something that you don't love, then work becomes mundane and pressurizing. I love every moment of being an actor so the tight schedule doesn't bother me at all!

Yashashri makes her Hindi debut with Odhani

Yashashri Masurkar is a new face in Hindi serials, but she isn't new to television. In fact, she is a well known actress in Marathi serials.

Yashashri will now play the lead role of Khanak in STAR One's new offering Rang Badalti Odhani, which goes on air on April 5. We caught up with Yashashri to find out more about her role on the show.

So who is Khanak?
Khanak urf Yashashri, that's me. As the name might suggest, I am a very simple and sober girl from a middle class family for whom culture is paramount.

If that's so, how did you step into the world of glamour?
I have always wanted to be an actress. As a child, I did theatre and plays. When I grew up, I worked at a BPO. One day, I learnt of an audition and went along. I was chosen for a role in Zee Marathi's serial Lakshman Resha and that's how the acting career began and the BPO one ended.

How did Odhani happen?
I got a call to audition for it. I suppose someone must have referred me to them, and I got the role because they liked my audition. Yash Patnaik called me and said I was on.

Tell us something about the character you will play.
Khanak is a sweet village girl for whom love is everything. She knows that her love is her life, and soon she is to marry. And that's what makes her happy. Every girl can relate to Khanak because every girl starts off with innocence as she faces the world.

Is Khanak like Yashashri in real life?
Of course! She is totally like me -- chanchal and masti bhari. She is full of life and love and so am I. She is furious when someone harms her loved ones and so am I. I think I relate to Khanak a lot.

What's it like acting in a serial set in a village?
Staying in a metro, a city, we've never faced the sort of things that happen there. But it's sad that anyone has to face such things at all. I guess through television we can spread a message. Education is so important, but because we are such a populous nation it will take time.

How different will your show be from those on air currently?
With Odhani, it's not the backdrop of culture that's actually defining. The location is incidental to the plot of Odhani, which is a love story, and how that changes later to a story of vengeance.

As for other serials, Odhani is different in its own way. It shows the emotions of a woman who has lost the love of her life, the trauma she has to go through.

How important is marriage to you, and what do you think of our tradition and our rituals?
I am a desi girl. I believe in Ganeshji and I'm certain whatever is happening to me today is because of him. Marriage is not only a relationship between two different people, it's about uniting two families.

Has it been different acting in a Hindi channel over a regional one?
Regional serials are more realistic than Hindi serials. But I guess Hindi serials have the larger audience.
