Oooops 😳 😳 😳

Sorry, Chatter ji. I didn't know you already posted them. There was a promo in which they showed him walking into the court and then walking on the streets with his wife and son and then people stoning the three of them. I couldn't get proper pictures from the promo. 😭

This is the best I have . . .

People stoning them??? What was the story - I was under the impression that Harishchandra was very popular, and only forced out by the Vishy meister. Or were there other episodes where he had to suffer???

I couldn't find the right books but here is what I remember:

Raja Harischandra was famous for his rule of justice and he never speaks lies.

Sage Viswamitra asked for his (Harischandra's) entire kingdom and he gave it. There are too many variations as to how Rishi Viswamitra asked for it. I don't remember that clearly.

Hence, the king had to leave the kingdom giving it up to the sage with his wife and son. One of the accounts days that Sage Viswamitra demanded that an extra amount was necessary to complete the giving up of the nation so he had to sell his wife and son (as he had no money now - Rishi Viswamitra claimed that the whole nation was his and he cannot use the wealth of the nation for this) and using that money, he completed the donation. Another account I read long long back (from a Tamil epic poem Harichandra Puranam or something like that) - The king, his wife and son was escorted out of the town to be left there. The person who escorted had asked Harischandra to give him something. As he had nothing with him, he sold his wife and son (climbed an elephant and threw a ball - the person who payed for the wife and son gave wealth ranging from the point the elephant stood to the point the ball fell to the ground) and gave all the wealth he got by it to the escort. I forgot his name - he was some sort of minister I think.

The wife and son were subjected to all sorts of hardships. Harischandra meanwhile apprenticed himself to a person incharge of the cremation grounds.

Days went by and they were subjected to so many hardships but they bore it all silently. One day, Harischandra's son was bitten by a snake and he died. His mother took the body to the cremation grounds to burn him but she didn't have anything to pay for it (It is customary to give certain items to the people who do ttake care of the burning of the corpses in the cremation grounds) But the person there (Harischandra himself) demanded her that she has to pay for it. He then realised that it was his own wife and the dead boy was his own son. Yet he insists that they have to pay for the last rites to be completed.

I don't know exactly what happens after that. The Devas, Gods and Rishi Viswamitra himself appear there and praise Harischandra for being truthful at all times. He gets back everything he lost including his son.

The whole thing happened because Harischandra refused to speak lies to anyone. In the middle even Sage Viswamitra himself said that if he strays away from the path of truth once, just once, he will restore him to what he was. But Harischandra remained steadfast till the end.

I do not know if this is the same Harischandra and I'm not clear about the role of Shani Dev in this story. All that I remember is something about the whole world (or Universe) being under Sage Viswamitra and he asking the Devas to put Raja Harischandra to all sorts of hardships in life till he speaks lies.

Sorry for the vague details. I couldn't find my books. When I find them, I'll post the stories I have.

The above story I was familiar w/. When Harishchandra was about to accept his wife's upper garment, which was the only thing she had to pay him w/, that was where the Vishy meister intervened. The chandala who Harishchandra was working for was Yama, and Rohita was restored to life.

No, my question was re: the stoning incident - when did that happen??? And why - was it b'cos Harishchandra sold his wife and kid, or b'cos he had nothing to give them????

I remembered - here was what got Harishchandra in trouble. Once, while hunting in a forest, he heard a rishi cry for help and went to rescue him. When he got there, he found that it was the Vishy meister, doing some weirdass tapas, which had now been interrupted due to Harishchandra taking it at face value. He wanted to curse him, but Harishchandra promised him anything he wanted. The Vishy meister later came and asked him for his kingdom, and much to the sorrow of his subjects, Harishchandra accepted to spare his subjects any retributions by the Vishy meister.

Then, to make this as ridiculous as our swarna kamal episodes, Vishy then went to Harishchandra and told him that what he had given was not enough, and he needed to give dakshina with it. That's what triggered the sale of his wife. His kid refused to leave his mother, and the Brahman who bought her paid some extra cash for the kid as well. Even that was not enough for greedy greedy 'Brahmarshi' Vishy, so Harishchandra had to sell himself.

How did this 🤬🤬🤬 ever become a Brahmarshi? Brahma died???
