Continued - the grand splendour of Sri Ram's entry into Ayodhya.Bharat embraced Sugreev and greeted him with gratitude, "Vanar King, we were four brothers by birth. Now we can boast of a fifth one in thee!" To the King Vibhishan, "Thou hast fought well for the sake of Ram." Shathrugan was as swift as his brother to greet Ram with reverence and pure love and to greet the other chiefs and to fall at Lady Sita's feet. Then Ram came to is mother. He saw her pale cheeks and wasted frame. He consoled her with gentle words and clasped her feet lovingly. And then he bent to Mother Sumitra's feet and then paid his reverence to Mother Kaikeyi too. Then Ram bowed to his preceptor and teacher. From the crowd a huge shout arose, "Welcome O Rama!!! We have mourned so long." "Welcome ? Joy and pride of Kaushalya!!!" ? ten hundred thousand voices greeted.
Then Bharat who had never swerved from his duty placed Sri Ram's sandals on his feet. He said, "My King, receive again the Kingdom I have preserved through years and years of pain. Take back the rule and lordship of the Empire that was entrusted to my weaker (than Ram's) hand. No more will I have to sigh over the sorrows that surrounded my past. At last, my birth and life has been blessed by the glad sight of Ram coming back to rule his own kingdom."
Such a faithful love for his elder brother Bharat held. This moved each heart gather there and was approved by all present there. The Vanar chiefs could not hold back their tears that fell like the rain from heaven. Then Ram who was ecstasic beyond limits by Bharat's loving words threw his arms around Bharat and descended from the vimana to the grove where Bharat spent the last fourteen years. Then at his command, the Pushpaka Vimana rose to the sky and sailed towards the home of the Lord of Gold, Kuber, who owned this ancient treasure.
Bharat saluted his brother with joint palms and said, "Thy Kingdom is restored to you O King, unharmed to the its rightful Lord. My feeble arms could scarcely bear the toil and pain of the burden. This heavy burden well nigh broke the neck that was untrained to bear the yoke. The royal swan always wins over the crow (in flight). The steed is faster than the mule. My feet cannot be lead through the rough ways in which only thy feet should walk. Now grant thy subjects wish and begin thy rule O King! Let our eyes see the glorious and ancient ritual of consecrating the new King.
When Bharat stopped speaking, Ram bent his head in acceptance (In plain words - he nodded his acknowledgement). He sat and the barbers trimmed his tangles of neglected hair with extreme care. Then Ram bathed and clothed in royal clothes and jewels shone like the Sun in all its splendour. Sita with the aid of the married women put on shining robes and jewels. The charioteer Sumantra (It seems that Sumantra was the charioteer, a nobleman and a family well wisher), ordered by Shathrugan drew near and stopped within the grove. In the chariot, Sugreev's consorts graced with many gems and Ram's royal queen sat. All of Ayodhya watched as the chariot sped swiftly.
Like the thousand eyed Lord Indra in his chariot drawn by a fleet of lions through the skies, radiant and glorious, Lord Ram rode homeward unparalleled in might and power. The chariots reign was held by Bharat. Above the unequalled victor's head Shathrugan held the snow - white shade. And Lakshman, ever ready to serve, fanned Lord Ram's forehead with a chourie. Vibhishan too shared the task of fanning the King close by Lakshman's side. Sugreev mounted a huge elephant by name Shatrunjay (victor of foes) which looked like a mountain. Assuming human forms, the chiefs of the Vanar Race were born by nine thousand elephants all gay and happy and in rich attires, adorned with gold and precious gems.
Thus, Lord Ram the foremost among men rode in the front of the whole procession. Borne in a Royal State, Lord Ram reached Ayodhya's gate and was welcomed with they sacred notes of the conches and drums and the joyful shouts. "Here comes Lord Ram!!!" With solemn Brahman host and cattle (cows and the rest of the auspicious creatures) and a long procession followed him. Many happy maids who came in an orderly fashion showered grains and gold (coins and jewels) liberally. Beneath the gorgeous royal flags that waved in rows and rows over the towers and roofs, amidst the merry and cheering crowd, the royal procession neared the Royal Palace of Ayodhya.
Coming up next - Lord Ram's Welcome in the Tulsidas Ramayan . . . But before that please let me know how you all like it. If there were any short comings please let me know ? I will try to correct it.
In the Tulsidas Ramayan, Tulsidas had always seen and depicted Ram as the all knowing God. Hence, this whole creation - Rama Charita Manasa - describes the virtues of the Lord (Ram) and the extreme devotion of his devotees. This text will be different from the other versions of Ramayan in which Lord Ram is portrayed a human being and his divinity showing up only when necessary.
I start from Lord Ram's instructions to Hanuman. Before this incident, Tulsidas Ramayan tells us how Ram described the sights to Devi Sita from the Pushpaka Vimana, reached Triveni and bathed in the sacred waters there.
Please excuse me and correct me if I am wrong in describing any scence. Many of you must have read (at least some parts from) the Rama Charita Manasa. I've read only the translation. Hence, correct me if I go wrong somewhere.
Lord Ram instructed Hanuman, "Go ahead of us to Ayodhya in the guise of a religious man (I think it is a religious student but I'm not sure). Tell Bharat the news that we are all well and then come back with the news about him." The son of the Wind God left immediately. Lord Ram then visited Sage Bharadwaja. The sage offered Him worships of all kinds, sang hymns praising Him and further gave Him his blessing. The Lord in turn adored the sage's feet with joined palms. He then mounted the aerial car and continued His journey. When the Lord of Nishada heard that the Lord had returned, he exclaimed "The boat! Where is the boat? (For taking Ram and his friends across the river as he did not know Ram was coming back in the Pushpaka Vimana). Meanwhile the aerial car flew across the sky over the celestial river (Ganga) and landed on the river bank adjoining Shringaverapura in obedience to the Lord's command. Sita offered all kinds of worship to the goddess presiding over the river Ganga. Ganga with gladness in her soul spoke her blessing "May you enjoy a happy married life without interruption (break). O Fair Lady!" As soon as he heard of Lord Ram's landing and Guha ran to meet his Master overwhelmed with love and full of ecstatic joy. Seeing the Lord accompanied by Vaidhehi (Vidheha's daughter), he fell flat on the ground unaware even of his own existence. The Lord of Raghus felt overjoyed to see Guha's excessive fondness. He raised him up and clasped him to His bosom.
The All – Merciful Lord of Ramaa (Ramaapathi), the wisest of the wise, raised him (Guha) up and embraced him and making him sit very close to Himself enquired his welfare. Guha replied "Now all is well with me for I have beheld Your Lotus Feet worthy of adoration by the Lord Viranci (Brahma) and Lord Sankara (Shiva). O Blissful one! Self sufficient as you are, I simply adore you, O Rama, I adore you! Hari had clasped to His bosom that Nishada who was very low in every aspect. Victimised by infatuation, this dull witted (Tulsidas describes himself so) has cast out of his mind (forgot) such a benign Lord. The story of the Slayer of Ravan is not only purifying (sanctifying) but grants love and ever lasting devotion to Lord Ram's feet. It uproots lust and other evil passions and begets true wisdom and is gladly sung by God, Siddhas and Sages.
The expiration of Lord Ram's exile was the sole hope of Bharat's life. The term was going to expire the next day and this thought filled Bharat's mind with untold grief. "How is it that the Lord did not turn up yet? Has he thrown me out of my mind knowing that I am crooked? Ah! How blessed and fortunate is Lakshman, genuinely devoted to Lord Ram's Lotus Feet. The Lord knew me to be false and perverse. That is why he had refused to take me along with Him. If the Lord were to consider my doings, there would be no redemption for me even after being born countless times (even after countless cycles). But the Lord being a friend of the humble and most tender-hearted, does not take into account the faults of His devotees. I have an unshakable belief in my heart that Lord Ram will definitely meet me, for the omens are so propitious. But, if I outlive the expiry of the time limit (of the exile), no one would be so despicable in this world as I am." While Bharat's mind was sinking in the ocean of separation from Lord Ram, Hanuman, the son of the wind god disguised as a Brahman came like a bark to the rescue. He found Bharat seated on a mat of Kusa grass, emaciated in body, with a coil of matted hair for a crown and the words, "Rama … Rama … Raghupathi" upon his lips, his lotus like eyes streaming with tears.
Hanuman was overjoyed at this sight – every hair on his body stood erect and his eyes poured down tears continuously. He (Hanuman) felt satisfied at heart in everyway and addressed Bharat in these words that were nectar to his (Bharat's ) ears, "He, in whose absence you sorrow day and night, the list of whose virtues you are continuously repeating, the glory of the race of Raghu(s), the delight of the virtuous and the deliverer of gods and sages, has arrived safely. He has conquered Hs enemies in battle and with the gods singing hymns in His praise, the Lord is now on His way with Sita and Lakshman. The moment Bharat heard these words, he forgot all his troubles like a thirsty man who has obtained nectar.
"Who are you, my beloved friend, and where have you come from? You have told me the most pleasing news."
"Listen, O fountain of mercy, I am the son of wind-god, a vanar; Hanuman is my name. I am a humble servant of Raghupathi (Lord Ram), the one who befriends the meek.
Hearing this Bharat rose reverentially and embraced him. The extreme affection with which Bharat embraced Hanuman was too great for his (Bharat) heart to contain – his eyes streamed with tears and hairs on his body stood erect. "At your very sight, O Hanuman, all my woes have disappeared. By embracing you I feel as if I have embraced my beloved Rama Himself today." Again and again, Bharat enquired after Lord Ram's health and said, "Listen, brother, what shall I give you (or this happy news)? I have pondered but found nothing in this world that would be as good as the news you have brought. Hence, I am not able to repay this debt. Now, please, tell me all the deeds and doings of my Lord." Hanuman bowed his head at Bharat's feet and narrated all the meritorious deeds of the Lord of the Raghus. Bharat then asked, "Tell me, Hanuman, does my ever gracious Lord remember me as one of His servants?"
"Did the Jewel of Raghu's race ever remember me as His servant?" – Hanuman was thrilled with joy to hear this extremely modest question from Bharat and fell at his (Bharat's) feet saying to himself, "How can he not be humble, the holiest of holy and the ocean of noble virtues when Lord Ram Himself, the Lord of all moving and unmoving creations, recites with his own lips"
"To Ram, you are dear as His life, my Lord. Believe my words to be true dear brother." Hearing this, Bharat embraced Hanuman again and again with uncontained joy in his heart. Hanuman bowed his head to Bharat's feet Hanuman returned to Lord Ram. Drawing close to Him told Lord Ram that all was well. The Lord then mounted His aerial car and joyfully proceeded (towards His destination).
My last post from the Rama Charita Manasa - I had used many sentences as it is from the translation I had - I couldn't find better words to describe it. Hence, my apologies for not being completely original in my posts. I couldn't complete the next part - was caught up with work and the Rakshaskul contest. Sorry for delaying again - I'll post it as and when I get time.
