Back in the days of Ramayana and Mahabharata, the tongue language of everyone was Sanskrit. They talked Sanskrit, read in Sanskrit, and lived Sanskrit. There was no other language than Sanskrit. All other languages of India originated from Sanskrit (except Tamil) in the beginning of Kali Yug.
But God understands you no matter in which tongue you speak to him. He understands you even if you do not speak in any language, but just think of him. That is the greatness of God. All God wants from us is devotion and love. It matters not which language we speak in.
The stones in the Ram Sethu had Shri Ram written on them in Sanskrit, as that was the first language of the entire India during Treta and Dwapar Yugs.
