Ravan is said to have been born in the village of Bisrakh ,he spent his childhood in this village that founded by his father Bisesvara,Instead of burning effigies of Ravan, the residents of Bisrakh worship Lord Shiva because Ravan was a follower of Shiv,While the rest of the world believes that Ravan is the demon who kidnapped Sita, women in Bisrakh worship him.

He was a devotee of LORD SHIVA and was so powerful that even the 9 planets called Navagrahas were over powered by him and rendered in active. The story goes that he was in the kingdom of the Lord but was cursed to take birth in the world and get killed in the hands of the Lord to attain salvation.
His action in carrying away SITA , wife of Sri RAMA, which resulted finally in his getting killed in the hands of Sri Rama, who was an AVATAR of Lord Vishnu but had to remain as a human being sans his supernatural powers.

Ravana's great-grandfather was Brahma, a deity. His grandmother was a demon. Ravana's father was a sage and his mother was a rakshasa - a type of demion So, he had both bloodlines

Lanka originally belonged to Ravana's half-brother Kubera, the Lord of the Treasures of Swarga. Ravana and his rakshasa allies demand Lanka from him, and Ravana and Kuvera's father Visrawas advises Kubera to give it up as Ravana cannot be killed by any celestial being. Ravana is thus made king of Lanka.

Emperor of the Three Worlds
Using his invulnerability and strength, Ravana conquers and humiliates thousands of kings across India, building Lanka's empire and dominion over the rest of the world.

Ravana also conquers the Yakshas led by Yama and his half-brother Kubera. Ravana invades the netherworlds, conquering many daitya, danava and asura races and making an alliance with the powerful Nivatakavachas.

He then takes an army of millions of rakshasas to conquer Swarga. Even the devas, headed by Indra, Agni, Vayu and Surya are forced to submit to the power of Ravana's army.

Ravana was born Dasagriva (One with Ten Heads) the son of the sage Visrawasa by his wife Kaikasi, a rakshasa princess. Thus he is thought to have been either a brahmin or a mix of the brahmin and kshatriya castes. The name Ravana (One of Terrifying Roar) was given to him by Lord Shiva.

While it is impossible to corellate the names of places mentioned in the ancient legends of India with modern-day towns and villages, the entirely obscure village of 'Bisrakh' in northern India claims to be the birth-place of Dasagriva.

Despite possessing aggressive tendencies as a young man, Dasagriva becomes an exemplary scholar of the Vedas and religious knowledge under the coaching of his pious father.

Emperor of the World, and Evil
After winning his boons, Ravana is sought out by the leaders of the rakshasas, who desire him to lead their race to power.

Conquest of Lanka

Violations of Women
Ravana's sexual prowess is important to note as it plays a critical part in his legacy and downfall. Even as a young man he shamelessly violates women, and blessed with awesome strength, becomes an immensely virile rakshasa. He is a master of tantric vidya, or magical sexual arts.

Although Ravana is married to Mandodari, the daughter of Asura Maya, he captures thousands of women from his conquests and maintains a harem of unparalleled size.

Ravana also violates Rambha, the queen of the Apsaras. He is thereby cursed that if he ever forces himself on a woman again, his heads will burst. This curse protects the chastity of Sita when she is his captive.

There is also a discussed prophesy in the Ramayana that Ravana had violated Vedavati, a young ascetic who was performing tapasya to win Vishnu as her husband. Ravana's actions cause Vedavati to immolate herself, but she pledges to return in another age to be his destruction. The Rishi Agastya explains that Vedavati was born as Sita, and she is the wife of Vishnu's Avatara, Rama, and the cause of Ravana's death

also i have heard UNLIKE many Hindus who consider Ravan as the symbol of evil, members of the Valmiki Samaj at Pardeshipura in Indore not only worship Ravan as a God but also avoid looking at the 'Ravan-Dahan' on Dussehra.there are also many places in the country where people worship Ravan.

I don't know where "Bisrakh" is, but it was once mentioned by Sonia (the contestant from Star Voice of India Chhote Ustaad) that Ravana was born in Kurukshetra.

normally people believe ravan has 10 head. this may be misunderstood as if any one cut his head his head reduce by number of head being cut. but this is not so. he has got amrit in his stomach by which his head would appear as soon it got cut. thats why his head always remained 10 inspite of so many being cut( many he cut himself, many by his father in law, many by ramji)

di ur hate of ravan is justified. but there is certain great qualities in ravan which should not be ignored. read this . i hope this would lessen ur hate to ravan😊

1-RAVANA: A NON VIOLENT "GANA-NAYAKA", (CHIEF OF REPUBLICS) CONTEMPORARY WITH THE BUDDHA.
Sidhartha Gautam Buddha and Ravana were contemporary. The principle of the Dhamma of Buddha and culture of "Rakshas" of Ravana were more or less similar. The Brahmins' culture of Ashrams had spread their web throughout the area to spread their concept of God and Yajnayas over the Adivasi thereby causing great danger to the traditions of Adivasi republics. There was a great conspiracy by the Vedic Rishis to start the internal revolt and struggle amongst different Adivasi republics because in North India the Buddhists created a strong influence. The Aryans had prepared themselves to oppose the Buddhist challenges.
Mahatma Ravana was a great world renowned hero of the Raksha Gana. Walmiki himself has called him Mahatma. Ravana was grand son of Pulsta and son of Wirsawa. In the Adivasi language Koytur "Pulai" means lion. The totem of Pulstya was lion. Trunbindu was wife of Pulstya. Wirsawa, whose other name was Kubara Virendu, had a wife Kakeya and Ravana was their son. The name Ravana has originated from their totem, though the complete name of Ravana is different. Ramdeo Paswan in his book "bharat se Arya", mentioned full name of Ravana to be "Raujaner Varendu Narendar" (RaVaNa) and its short form was Ravana. [Dalit Voice, May 1-15, 1998] His wife Mandodari was daughter of Danava named as Maya. The Rakshas Gana of the Ravana belonged to Daitya race and his mother also belonged to the same race.
Ravana was a very powerful hero of battles. He had only one mouth two hands and two legs. Aryan Pundits depicted him in a corrupt form to the society out of hate and contempt.

2-the 10-headed infamous demon, was a greater scholar than Lord Ram. Not many people know abt the true meaning why ravan had 10 heads. The heads are the symbolic way to show thw world about his knowledge. He was fully aware of the contents of the six shastras. His knowledge of the six shastras and his knowledge of the four vedas (together ten) is the inner meaning of the belief that Ravana had ten heads. He even knew that Ram was Narayana himself, who had come in human form. However, since there was no other way for him to reach to Narayana, he had to cultivate wanton wickedness, violence and hatred, and invite Ram to kill him. Of course, this might be called a type of devotion that is stupid and infamous. But his inner aim was to cross the ocean of birth and death, through that act of self abnegation and surrender to Narayana. Scriptures also justify this argument: In the Bhagavata Purana, Ravana and his brother, Kumbakarna were said to be reincarnations of Jaya and Vijaya, gatekeepers at Vaikunth, the abode of Vishnu and were cursed to be born in Earth for their insolence. These gatekeepers refused entry to the Sanatha Kumara monks, who, because of their powers and austerity appeared as young children. For their insolence, the monks cursed them to be expelled from Vaikunta and to be born in Earth. The all-merciful Vishnu agreed that they should be punished but agreed to mitigate their curse. He asked them whether they would want to be undergo seven births as devotees of Vishnu or three births as enemies of the Lord. Since they wanted to get back as soon as possible, they agreed to be born in three births as enemies of God. In the first birth, Jaya and Vijaya were born as Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha. Vishnu incarnated as Varaha and Narasimha and killed them both. In Treta Yuga they were born as Ravana and Kumbhakarna and were killed by Rama. Then in Dwapara yuga, and in their final birth, Jaya and Vijaya they were born as Shishupala and Dantavakra and killed by Sri Krishna.

Thanx Rajnish for this info! Yes, Ravan was indeed a great pundit but yet he was one of the most arrogant man of his time! Many people did considered him a great pundit. When Ravan was on his death-bed, Lord Shri Ram asked Lakshman to get a knowledge or something like this, from Ravan? Cant remember what it was. Its been a long time since i watched the old Ramayan. Do you remember?
