Hey fellow Raavan-ians,
Welcome to our first DOTW!

A DOTW is basically where I will give a topic and everyone will talk about. It could be question or a quote. It will deal with Raavan, the show, in some way.

So the first DOTW topic is:

  • After the first 20 episodes, what do you think about Raavan?
  • Is is really that bad?
  • What might be a reason he is portrayed that way?
  • How is Raavan good?
Just remember to answer these questions and keep the IF Code of Conduct in mind!

Have fun!!

Until next week,
Uma!!

Hello!! Uma..😊
Thanks for starting this DOTW.. i guess this would help making this forum more active, more ideas n knowledge discussed here..

  • After the first 20 episodes, what do you think about Raavan?

I think Raavan is a very intresting show, its really nice to know alot more about Raavan and the history that eventually made him what he was.. there are many incidents i wasnt aware of, so its really great to know more..

  • Is it really that bad?

Not at all.. I think it is one of the best n now my fav. show too..

  • What might be a reason he is portrayed that way?

Probably most of us do not know much about him, so he has always been portrayed as a villian or someone who always did the wrong deeds, but there are also many things he did for the welfare of the people..

  • How is Raavan good?

His characteristics shown as a child has been very helpful, understanding, fight for justice n stand against injustice, loving and caring, respecting the values of people without dividing them into low-caste.. even though he has been showed aggressive and harsh at times, he was good and helpful to all..

Hope my answers were good enough..

Hi Umi (hope you do not mind I am not adding 82990),
You have asked

# After the first 20 episodes, what do you think about Raavan?
# Is is really that bad?

Are you asking about serial Ravan or character Ravan? In other words do you want to know how the TV serial Ravan is or do you want to know how the character Ravan is?

You also asked: -

# What might be a reason he is portrayed that way?
# How is Raavan good?

You are asking why Ravan is portrayed this way in the serial Ravan on Zee TV. I have read Ramayan in great detail. I would love to participate in this discussion. But can I use my knowledge from what I have learnt by reading scriptures? Or, should I restrict myself only to what is shown in this serial? I mean, if the serial shows something and I know from my knowledge of Ramayana that just the opposite happened, then what should I assume?

A few days back I got a PM from you. After this I visited this thread and saw your message above. I could not respond earlier because I had seen only one episode of Ravan - the one in which Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Vibhishan get boons from Lord Brahma. In order to give appropriate answer to your question, I needed to watch some more episodes. Therefore, I watched videos of some episodes posted here. Based on that, I could get a feel of what this serial is showing. Now, let me answer your questions.

Ravan, as being shown in this TV serial, is very good. This is why I find this serial objectionable. Ravan, as shown in Valmiki Ramayan and many other scriptures was very bad. Of course, he had some good qualities. But overall he was bad. In another thread, some members said that it was not necessary for everybody to believe in the same scriptures; they have every right to have their point of view. I agree that people are entitled to have their opinion. But, if the makers of Ravan want to show something different from what is present in popular scriptures, then they must mention their source. When an episode starts, then the names of some books are shown as source. I have read those books. What the serial shows is, in many cases, contradictory to what those books say. Isn't it bad to misquote some books? Many people have not read scriptures and they try to learn scriptures from these TV serials. People who watch the serial Ravan will obviously get wrong picture of the scriptures. On one hand, the makers of Ravan claim certain books as the source of the story in the serial. On the other hand, they are showing things contradictory to what those books say.

I started a thread named Parasuram. May be you can send PMs to some members telling them that they can read stories from scriptures in this forum. I will regularly write stories relevant to the serial Ravan.
